Is it not customary for Australian cities to get their indigenous names? Maybe I just hang out with the political correct crowd, but they tend to refer to "Melbourne/Narrm".

Lived in Melbourne 6 years (2005-2011) and that's the first time I've ever been made aware it's indigenous name is Narrm.

But for sure bilingualism, if that's the correct term, is far far more prevalent in NZ. Though is also apples & oranges somewhat with there being 290+ different Australian Aboriginal languages (or so Wiki tells me).

all the weekday games in New Zealand better be in the evening otherwise no one will attend. I'm predicting match times to be 17:00, 20:00, 23:00 nz time with NZ having 17:00 and 20:00 and Aus having 18:00 and 21:00, with the last round of group stage and knock out matches being 17:00 and 21:00 (19:00 and 23:00 nz time). Matches need to be late because of EU tv audience and the point I mentioned earlier about weekday attendances

Weekday afternoons might be more attractive than weekday evenings in the middle of winter...

But I think you'll be bang on with the times. The opening night is a double-header Auckland/Sydney, so I think that could be 7pm/10pm NZT or maybe 8pm/11pm NZT. Then the first Sunday is a quadruple header featuring Perth, so expecting that will be 5pm/8pm/11pm/2am NZT.

This world cup will get low tv ratings in North America. Being 5 - 10 hours ahead is worse than being 5-10 hours behind. European tv Audiences should be alright, Games in Europe would start at 7am with the latest ones in early afternoon.

Mid afternoon NZ (night time North America), or late evening kick off Perth (early breakfast North America) I guess are options.

5 AFC qualifiers (excl Matildas as hosts) confirmed.

Hopefully Ferns can get either Vietnam or Philippines in their pool.

China won Women's Asian Cup last week, 3-2 over Sth Korea. Matildas lost their QF to the Koreans. Not sure how full strength Australia were.

Note that Iran were the only Arab/West Asian team at the tourney.

Patterson is grateful for the ongoing help she has from the Big Four – the other three Kiwi women leading the cricket and rugby World Cups and the IWG World Conference on Women in Sport, in Auckland in November.

They try to meet for a drink and a chat once a month, and have a WhatsApp group where they are constantly sharing information on running a global sports event, Patterson says.

An interesting concept that’s grown out of the unique sharing arrangement is ‘The Bench’ – created by Cricket World Cup chief executive, Andrea Nelson. Heading into the final in Christchurch, when an easing of Covid restrictions finally allowed a full house of fans, Nelson set up a reserve bench of event organisers in case any of her key people went down with the virus.

Patterson was on the bench alongside a number of her staff. “We gave her our venue manager from Dunedin for a week to help her out,” she says.

When the women’s Euros are over, the FA (England’s Football Association) will share the challenges they've faced with Patterson’s World Cup team. “The industry can only get better through sharing and planning," Patterson says.

I have a bad feeling that only the football ferns and USWNT(if they are drawn to the correct group) games will be full and the other games will be half empty. Many of the continental tournaments going on had swaths of empty seats (even some of the women's euros matches).

Yipe any midweek games at night could be a tough sell in July. Also given the WC has been expanded to 32 teams I imagine there will be a few more ‘unfashionable’ teams than before.

Previous WWCs have been in summer? Also near large popn bases like Europe and North America. Next year is neither, so that will provide a challenge

I see the Phillipines have qualified. Would be cool if they played in NZ. Big expat community now in Godzone and generally really decent, good, hard working people. I’m sure they would proudly turn out in force if their dairy farm & hospital bosses gave them some time off. Not many opportunities to cheer on a Filipino sporting team for them

Re Phillipines, their mens basketball played in a Basketball World Cup qualifier 3 weeks ago in Auckland, attendance 3827.  I don't think you will get the crowd you are thinking of.

unrelated but also shockingly the 3 intercontinental playoff matches in Qatar weren't even half full either despite the high importance of those games. But I hope I'm wrong about what I think the attendance will look like next year.

If your meaning the men's games, the local FIFA organisers handed out free tickets to the Philipinos and South Asians slaving away in Qatar, but very few of them turned up and the ones that did had no idea about football even though they literally gave their lives to build the stadium we were in.

As to fans of NZ, Straya, CR and Peru, it's a lot of money to fly there for a one off game and it's not got scenery, history or culture as draws either.  Most fans there were either living in the Middle East or sado diehards like myself.

We should not expect many travelling fans for our World Cup next year, and the ones who come will mostly be European or North American.

We will see nice sized crowds even for midweek games. The growth of womens football in NZ over the last 20 years has seen huge numbers of young girls playing at school and clubs. I have no worries with respect to the crowds. the publicity will be huge and the novelty factor will bring in the fans in big numbers.

Yeah you are probably right. I of course have now gone down a Wiki rabbit hole.

There were 72,612 people identifying as being part of the Filipino ethnic group at the 2018 New Zealand census, making up 1.5% of New Zealand's population.

In terms of population distribution, 45.2% of Filipino New Zealanders lived in the Auckland region, 28.9% lived in the North Island outside the Auckland region, and 25.9% lived in the South Island. The
Kaipātiki local board area of Auckland had the highest concentration of Filipino people at 5.4%, followed by the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki local board area (3.9%) and the Ashburton District (3.8%).

So the expat popn not as big as a I thought. Though it's likely increased again since 2018 census. I've got mates who are dairy farmers in Southland and Canterbury, who tell me much of the workforce is Filipino. But I guess we are talking rural areas with small popns. When I did my 2 weeks MIQ back in 2020, nearly all the nurses at the MIQ Hotel in Christchurch were Filipino.

But Sydney being the multic cultured beast it is of over 5M souls, could have more Filipinos than NZ alone. Surprising that they ain't using Parramatta Stadium for the WWC, given how multi cultural Western Sydney is. Must be below the stadium capacity threshold.

Anyway hopefully the tourney draws good crowds in NZ. But I imagine for some of the less attractive fixtures, they may need to do promotions like free tickets to school kids, get local clubs to adopt a team etc.

This is one of the things that sux about FIFA world cups in general, but really it shouldn't be too hard for us tragics here to get Ferns and other big team tickets unlike the men's WC.

So definitely more than 3600 international visitors (not counting Australia) even though Australia has most of the knock out matches?.

Depends who we get in our groups. The European nations, USA and Canada are bound to bring strong support. This is a much bigger tournament than the U20s and some of the teams that will be there are very popular.

You say that about the knockout matches - any team in Group A or C will play it's knockout games in NZ.
