I'm not the most clued up on squads, but GI and Mosgiel should naturally be contenders if they keep most of their personnel together, Uni also have a great system and obviously you'd expect the South City Royals merger to be up there.
It'd be nice if one of the central teams made the South Island League but I can't really see it. Northern are a writeoff, and Roslyn I honestly don't know very much about apart from their recent league finishes.
Also just noticed the draw for the new season is out - first round is: Uni vs Northern, Football Turf (16th March, 7pm) Queenstown vs South City, Queenstown Events Centre (20th March, 2.45pm) Roslyn vs GI, Ellis Park (20th March, 2.45pm) Wanaka vs Mosgiel, Wanaka Rec Centre (20th March, 2.45pm)
Certainly a good thing - last season wasn't nearly long enough (understandable with COVID constraints). A genuine home and away season is a positive thing for the league, not to mention no longer having the bye...
Uni comprehensive 5-1 winners in the opener, Northern struggled after going down to ten. Uni looking really cohesive and in good shape, good attendance for the opener as well. Rest of the league begins Saturday.
https://www.odt.co.nz/sport/football/football-chat-gearing-new-season Season 2 of Football Chat is upon us and our opening game is one you don’t want to miss.
Host Morgan Jarvis is joined by Green Island men’s coach Shane Carvell and Dunedin Tech’s Hannah Mackay-Wright, who recently attended a New Zealand Under-20 ID Camp.
The trio discuss the revamped men’s Southern Premiership structure, which sees the top three teams winning a spot in a brand-new league.
This season sees some changes in teams competing, with the amalgamation of Caversham and Dunedin Tech’s Men’s team giving us the South City Royals.
Hannnah gives us an insight into the pressure of playing for Tech, who remain undefeated in the league and are targeting the Kate Sheppard cup this year.
Coach of last season’s men’s champions, Shane Carvell, tells of his desire to win the league again and previews the weekend’s fixtures.

Disappointing that the Northern, Central and Mainland leagues have all have squad announcements yet nothing from Football South... sigh.
Nevertheless, entertaining opening week and clearly going to be a close competition this year, it seems Roslyn, Queenstown, South City are all improving.
This weekend I've got: Uni beating Mosgiel 3-1 Queenstown beating Roslyn 3-2 GI beating Northern 4-1 South City beating Wanaka 3-1
Results Uni 3-1 Mosgiel - Uni on a perfect 6 points and looking like a real contender early on - albeit they've only played at home. Another poor result for Mosgiel. Queenstown 2-3 Roslyn - Another great result for Roslyn, third on the table after that. Queenstown will be disappointed slipping to a defeat after a well-earned first round point. Northern 3-3 GI - Northern have their first point since 2019!! Dunno much of the details for this one but GI's title defence not looking too flash at this point. South City 10-2 Wanaka - Scoreline says it all, Wanaka had given up and SCR kept piling on the misery with more and more goals (it was actually only 4-2 at half time!). Into 2nd place and looking like an actual contender this time around. Big questions need answering for Wanaka cause that was some of the worst defending I've seen for a while 😂
Highlights from the South City game: https://fb.watch/4viHz0hLV_/
Looks like Green Island's title defence is in tatters already, Northern ended their losing streak with a total of 36 league losses in a row, their last point was against University (25/08/2018), however the winless counter is still going at 39 games!
Green Island are actually on a bit of a winless streak themselves, 5 league games + the South Island Final against Cashmere, this included losses against Uni & Wanaka & a draw vs Mosgiel after they'd wrapped up the league title.
Poor form has continued this season with the draw against roslyn which is currently in the process of being overturned as a result of breaching competition rules & fielding an ineligible player & obviously the embarrassing result against Northern yesterday.
There are also some rumours coming out of Sunnyvale that last years lads aren't very happy with the inclusion of some transfers from Mosgiel...

Overturned in which way? Who fielded the ineligible player?
Apparently the left back for GI Connor Spear hadn't been released from Uni as he's "red flagged" in Comet, looks like he hasn't given back some gear from last year but GI just went ahead & created another registration with the same name.
So Roslyn will be awarded 3pts if correct, pretty stupid from GI really, it's up there with Cam McPhail's stuff up that got Mosgiel kicked out of Chatham Cup 2 years ago.

Pretty silly error to make even at an amateur level of football, Roslyn will be up to a perfect six points if so!
Think pressure may be getting to them a bit, at least against Roslyn from what I saw they really struggled to get into their rhythm until in the second half when they were 2-1 down, rusty after the offseason maybe but still think there's confidence issues there.
And Northern have gotten a little better and are usually alright at Forrester Park but come on... not a team the champions should be drawing with.

Could we have a big round of applause for Northern AFC, with the latest 0-3 loss to Queenstown, i believe they celebrated 40 league games without a win

Sounds like it was a close game that blew out, they got their first point the other week remember! They've clearly improved from last season.

Can Northern beat winless Mosgiel midweek? Malcolm Fleming has only been involved in 4 wins since the start of last season, those were against Northern & Roslyn, 2 of them coming in that bottom 5 crap league. Also i seem to recall he had a very bad season with Caversham before getting the boot.

Does Cam McPhail not coach Mosgiel? I didn't even know Malcolm Fleming was there. Mosgiel losing to Wanaka was a shock for sure.

Malcolm is on the coaching staff, just pointing out his poor record of late
43 games & 1001 days without a win has sadly come to an end
Sadly???
I think we all wanted them to raise the bat at 50 no? They should've been relegated to Fletcher Cup years ago, it's a joke they've been able to stay in the league, it's just not the last 1001 days, go back 10-15 years.... worst team in NZ!

Not really I'd say it's good they finally won a game. They make up the numbers in a league that is having one merger, then potentially another merger, then three teams gone to South Island league...
Of all the clubs I’ve been involved with down here, I actually think that they’ve got the best vibe. Northern aren’t naive to the results but are working towards righting that- with a great bunch of people throughout the club. Pleasantly surprised.
Just a bit embarrassing - but that’s football right? All you can do is shake your head, laugh and move on. Poor game by me, but I’m not going to roast my team here. Best club with the best supporters and atmosphere I’ve experienced since being home. If that’s a personal dig - I scored a goal in the CC from halfway, I can retire happy.
