Harsh judgement. Only his 2nd game back after nearly a month out injured. Highlights of this game or the Leicester one, commentators were praising him.

Edit: Dyche says 'keeper makes a great save' and it was classic CF lead up play.

Had a reasonable game, just I think it was a very decent chance. Most points in his career I reckon he'd have had it on toast. Did work the keeper though. Harsh because I rate him, not the other way around.

Scores Clarets first goal with a lovely strike (13th min) in a 2-1 win at Everton (6th).  McNeil with an even better hit for the 2nd goal.

'Outstanding finish by the New Zealander'. Not a large backlift for that strike. When the big guy retires, or drops out of the EPL, Kiwis are going to realise how rare it is to see one of their own scoring regularly at that level. Could easily be 20 years before it happens again.

Of course it being 3.5 years now (when in the prime of his career) since he last played a game in NZ, doesn't help his profile. Looks like it will go well over 4 years, between games in his home country.

Not a mention in TV One Sports News of his goal against the Toffies. Just ad nauseum about some yacht race. The giant con.

From this week's Flying Kiwis re the win over Everton.

Chris Wood: “It’s always nice to perform well, which we have done at times and not got the win, so after the last few weeks it was nice to put a win on the board. It’s been a difficult run of fixtures for us against some very good sides. We’ve picked up some great draws and now we’ve come to a great side and picked up a win, which is nice going into our little break. If Jo’s shot had gone in it would have been a different ball game. Conceding five minutes before half time isn’t ideal. Going in at 2-0 we’re comfortable. Going 2-1 it’s a tough scoreline to hold onto but it shows our resilience, our team spirit and our good work ethic to get through it and come out on top. Things are going in the right direction. There are some big games coming up and after the break we’ll come back firing and ready to go.”

BBC: “Chris Wood's opener was his 40th Premier League goal for Burnley. He's the second player to reach that tally for the club in the competition, after Ashley Barnes.”

Up Next: Nothing ‘til 4 April away to Southampton, at the tasty hour of 11pm (NZT)

From this week's Flying Kiwis.

The first half hour of Burnley’s game against Southampton, coming out of the international break, was about as good as things have been all season. Named to start up top alongside Matej Vydra - with whom he’s establishing a really handy partnership as Vydra’s extra speed and mobility really simplify his own task whilst also allowing Burnley to press a little more up top - and The Woodsman was instantly in the action, popping up out of nowhere to win the ball back on halfway and then combining with Vydra before forcing a save 36 seconds after kickoff. Bit of a soft attempt but a worthy sighter that earned a corner.

It’d be a myth to say that Burnley were completely dominant, Southampton definitely had a few early moments themselves, but the Clarets were playing their style of footy and it was working. Attacking set pieces, Woody under the high ball looking to link up with Vydra, Dwight McNeil with lots of touches. And before too long they saw their reward for that. Erik Pieters going down under the challenge from Kyle Walker-Peters and initially the ref allowed the game to continue but Pieters stayed down needing treatment and about a minute and a half after the initial challenge the VAR called for the ref to take a peek at the screen – thirty seconds later awarding the spottie. Just the second penalty that Burnley have won all season (but the 100th overall penalty awarded in the Premier League this season) and it was Chris Wood who placed the ball and then slammed it down the middle as Fraser Forster dove to his right. Third straight game with a goal for Woody and he’s up to seven for the season – very much on pace again for a fourth straight season with 10+.

He wasn’t done there either. Woody and Vydra’s combination continued to flourish when Wood flicked on a dropping high ball to his lil buddy on the runaround and Vydra thumped it home, great finish and Burnley were up 2-0 after 28 minutes.

Then came the rest of the game.
Chris Wood later suggested that Burnley switched off and were punished. He’s probably right, as Danny Ings  touched a short ball into the run of Stuart Armstrong who drove in a first for the Saints just a few minutes after that Vydra goal. Then Ings was up to even more tricks against his old team, pouncing on a bit of hesitancy from Ben Mee and charging into the box, cutting past James Tarkowski and beating Nick Pope from up close. Another brilliant goal and just before the half it was all level. But that wasn’t the end of it because although James Ward-Prowse’s shot came down off the crossbar to Nick Pope’s relief, and Armstrong drew a brilliant save from Pope with a deflected cruncher, Nathan Redmond soon bagged one that counted in the 66th minute as he polished off a Theo Walcott dink-cross after Danny Ings had stung Pope’s palms again. From 2-0 up to 3-2 down.

All the while Chris Wood kept threatening. He had a header from a drilled in Pieters cross that was a tad beyond his reach while it was still 2-2. Then with his team trailing he curled one towards the top corner only for Forster to get his fingers to it. Then Forster did it again to a diving header from Wood in the six yard box near the end as Southampton clinched that 3-2 win. A good day in that Chris Wood looked sharp and scored a goal. A bad day in that his team bottled an early lead away from home in very un-Burnley fashion. Hmm, internal conflict.

Chris Wood on tying Ashley Barnes as Burnley’s all-time record Premier League goalscorer with 41 bangers: “Personally, it’s a nice achievement but just a bit sour because of how it finished. It would have been nice to take home the three points, or at least a point after the first 30 minutes. Hopefully I’ve got a lot more goals in me. But I’m sure Barnesy has too. He’s chomping at the bit to get back fit so I’m sure he will be back challenging me again very soon. It’s a positive run and hopefully there are a lot more to come before the end of the season.”

Huge potential change for Burnley and the whole Premier League next season if the European Super League goes ahead. The Premier League has said that any team involved in it would be disqualified from the Premier League, so there’s a huge chance none of the Top 6 will be involved and 6 teams will have to be replaced.

The ramifications are huge, suddenly Burnley will be competing no longer against City, Chelsea, Liverpool or United, but Leeds, West Ham and Leicester, meaning their chance at Europe or even the title (!) has never been better in the Premier League era. The new breakaway league is terrible, but it provides Burnley with a genuine chance at winning things, now that the behemoths will be banned from English and European football.

Also, could mean Winston Reid’s Brentford go up as well, as 6 teams would leave the league (excluding relegated teams) so likely more Championship teams will be promoted to fill the gap.

I’ve also seen rumours that players at the clubs in the Super League will be banned from playing at the World Cup and other international tournaments, so players from countries like England, France, Spain, Italy, Brazil would be given a huge financial dilemma (Germany less so as looks like no Bundesliga clubs are agreeing to join atm due to their democratic ownership and obvious fan disagreements with the league). This could mean the All Whites avoid the superstars should they qualify for the World Cup and potentially do better.

Absolutely nuts day in football though, probably the biggest changes to the sport ever.

Yeah considering how Wood is so physically dominate in the EPL he will likely destroy some u23/24 defences if he gets good service (possibly even from Waine who has a very good cross when he gets wider). Cacache and Wood would also be great to watch.

Still a wee bit behind club record goal scorer George Beel (188) though 😅

This is a great opportunity to actually front foot things - it is an historical achievement, but importantly from a media perspective if has a tangible angle (ie footage of 3 goals) to build a story around.  When Ryan Nelsen was tearing up in England, it was harder to find such angles as he was a defender - an outstanding one, but a position where it is harder to find those little bit size clips that news outlets can seize on... it's no coincidence that the rise of the Socceroos profile in the late 90s came with the emergence of Viduka and Kewell (players scoring goals) rather than players who were also excellent but didn't play up front scoring goals (Zelic, Okon, etc).

We often rightly lament the lack of respect Wynton received for his exploits due to the era of no TV coverage (I'm pretty sure the Cup Winners Cup Final he won was the first time he'd been live on TV in NZ in what wasn't an All Whites fixture), positing the argument that if he'd been in England rather than Germany he would have been far better appreciated.  So now we have a top player, in the top league in England, scoring goals, and now this achievement - it's awesome :)

I'm going to remain optimistic that the media will understand this and make the most of the opportunity.  But if they don't, it certainly doesn't make the achievement any less good - I'd rather just celebrate it than lament that a rugby-focused outlet doesn't give it profile. Their loss :)

It’s an Olympic year so he’s no chance to win, but NZF need to finally nominate him for Sportsman of the Year re Halbergs.

I may have this wrong but I understand to date NZF have never done that, which if true is piss poor.

My understanding is that the halbergs have an emphasis on winning, which will always prioritise the big fish in the small pond (rugby et al.) over the fish doing exceptionally well in a big pond (Wood, Steven Adams etc).

Ive read articles that say he's been nominated but not made the finals due to the criteria being against him.

How much of that popularity is influenced based on the size of the story, I don't know.
