Ole @ Torslanda IK (Sweden; regional 4th division?)

Note that this season in Division 3 will see the teams facing each other only once (11 games) because of corona. So a few good games can mean a lot in search for promotion back to Division 2. The league winner is promoted and the runner up qualifies for promotion play offs. My guess is that Torslanda will have to fight for that play off place because at least one other team have a better squad and key players.

Cheers. Heard any rumours, about any of the Kiwi contingent trialling elsewhere over this July summer break?

Would seem the time to do it.

Pub 5th tier football has resumed in Sweden after it's summer break.

Most recent match report, from Torslanda's website (last weekend's game).

https://www.torslandaik.com/tik-fotboll-herr/match/8578080/dalen-krokslatts-ff/referat

Harry Edge, Wooldridge & Parker-Price all still there.

3rd on the table at that point, but see lost 1-0 at 4th placed team yesterday.

A 3-0 win for Torslanda yesterday. They sit 2nd in their regional league.

Harry Edge, Wooldridge and Parker-Price all involved.

https://www.torslandaik.com/tik-fotboll-herr/match/8578083/hisingsbacka-fc

But surely Wooldridge & P-P have higher ambitions than 5th tier Swedish football. I imagine Declan is telling them to be patient. Either worth a trial at the Nix?

P-P with a goal. Wonder if McCowatt was a spectator, catching up with his Ole mates. Worth remembering that Pjinaker first landed in Europe at Torslanda.

If McCowatt signs for a European club, that would mean 7 of that Handy Prem winning Eastern Suburbs side (all Ole alumni?) would be in 'Europe'.

Torslanda just beat local rivals Öckerö and with two games left they are second in the league. Parker-Price scored the final goal. Very impressive season so far but I can't see Angered (yes that is the name of a part of Gothemburg) fail to win the league. However Torslanda's remaining opponents are slightly weaker while Angered will have to face Kållered and Hestrafors (3rd and 4th respectively).

I note Parker-Price got mentioned recently (I think by Andrew Voerman) as a candidate for the Euro AWs (if they play). Hopefully that means he's then on the radar of a few clubs at a level above the Swedish 5th tier.

But yeah overall I think this idea of Ole effectively having a European base with Torslanda, is a good one.

No, highly likely it's very average. But for what Declan trying to do over there, I'd say it ain't that important for now. Everything he does has a long term focus.

Where he's had a club board that sort of understands that (Wests) it's gone ok. Sounds like Torslanda's bosses are onboard with that as well, and I'm guessing they are hoping to be promoted up the divisions over time.

Where he's been at a club more focused on immediate results, like Melville or Waikato FC - it's just all blown up as a mess. And of course Edge being a blunt/difficult character doesn't help. He basically seems to need to have total control, and patient club supporters/backers to succeed.

Other important thing to consider with Torslanda, is it gives a base in Europe for all these Ole grads to start at in need, as they try to 'crack it' in Europe. For example Pijnaker started at Torslanda. Coming all the way from NZ and trying to get signed by a club somewhere on the old   continent can be a very lonely tough road (read abit about Bill Tuiloma's journey as one example). But these Ole grads can land at Torslanda as a starting point, with a lot of support and guidance from likes of Edge and Dan Keat, before they head off to trial at different clubs over time etc.

Even those who got directly signed from NZ, like McCowatt, Wilkins, Just and Stamenic are all practically just a ferry ride away in Denmark - and it must be nice to know their long time mentor Declan is close at hand, for some career advice, etc in need.Garbett also in Sweden.

It's amateur or semi-professional clubs in that division. And as you say, 84 clubs mean hundreds of players playing at that level so it's nothing special at all playing there. I live in Gothenburg and this city have four clubs in Division 2, three clubs in Division 1 and four clubs in the two professional leagues. And a normal year at least 10 in Division 3 (12 regional leagues with 12 teams each).

The professional clubs always scout in Division 1 and 2 (and with more and more success since scouting software and statistics improve) but in Division 3 where Torslanda are playing currently it's very unlikely to get a transfer to a professional club unless you have great connections. Dan Keat in Torslanda may have those kinds of connections to his former clubs GAIS and Falkenberg and perhaps some agents but don't expect too much guys. Pijnaker's story is an anomaly too be honest. And if I were a scout looking at Torslanda I would notice several of their young local players that really have made an impact this season. Not Parker-Price (for instance). He's 22 playing in the Swedish fifth tier, he better have a fantastic agent working for him to have a chance of a professional career.

Yes had it wrong, another playoff series to go, this time against IFK Tidaholm.

Torslanda won the home leg 1-0.

Away leg this weekend.

In the men's first match of two in the final qualifier for div 2, TIK won over IFK Tidaholm with 1-0 in Saturday's home match. TIK is now going up to Tidaholm with 1-0 in the bag before the absolutely decisive match.

Torslanda in Swedish Div 2 (4th tier) this season. Div 2 consists of 6 regional leagues (so about 90 teams in total).

Torslanda in Västra Götaland region. Season start delayed until May.
https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2021/05/08/sweden/division-2/torslanda-ik/ik-tord/3447748/

Jesse Edge's IFK Berga in Södra Götaland region.  https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2021/05/01/sweden/division-2/asarums/ifk-berga/3447323/

But in the bigger picture, if likes of Rogerson & Feutz, can use Torslanda as a safe starting familiar base in Europe, and eventually trial elsewhere, that's not a bad model. Seemed to help Pjijnaker, but others like Parker-Price or Wooldridge haven't yet found a higher level?

I presume Torslanda have some reasonable training facilities, if Declan is happy to base his Euro experiment there. Chance of being a possible (cheapest) AWs training base for any future European friendlies?? Declan and Hay are mates after all. Probably a big factor, Stamenic and Garbett both got their calls off the U17 World Cup, which there should’ve been one last year but was cancelled, so that shop window in front of scouts has been taken away. Also with MIQ it probably makes doing trials overseas more difficult, because it’ll be difficult and expensive to get back into the country afterwards, but there are still lots of players coming through Ole, and is reflected in national identification camps for the next cycle of 20s and 17s.

Torslanda's two best keepers are currently ruled out for some reason I don't know and the third choice was sent off in the second last game so Keat had to play as goalkeeper for maybe 30 minutes last weekend. He kept a clean sheet and Torslanda managed to win. Yesterday he played a full game as goalkeeper, only conceded one goal. Kinda impressive I guess.

So Torslanda's first and second keepers are back, at least for a short while. So Keat is back on the bench. The club also took in a new goalkeeper during the summer so they have used five goalkeepers in 19 games so far this season. I have never seen anything like that in my life as a football nerd. And the team manage to keep a stable level anyway.

I was very sceptical in this project from the beginning since Torslanda IK is an important club in our city. And 'projects' are with good reason frowned upon in Swedish football. But I have to admit Olé and Torslanda IK seem to have developed a relationship where the club members are still in control and perhaps have awakened the club again after a few stagnant years. I still can't see what this add to New Zealand football but it's cool to know that people on the other side of the globe follow my local fourth division league.

Probably a number of reasons why Declan/Ole set up in Sweden.

But one objective that has been quoted, is to help make it easier for young Kiwis (Ole grads) transistion to Europe. Pijnaker used Torslanda briefly as a base before heading to Switzerland, Portugal & now Denmark.

Guessing likes of Stamenic & Garbett may have spent some time at Torslanda when first coming to Europe. Just, Wilkins & McCowatt. Even if not, handy to know Uncle Declan not far away for a advisory phone call.

It's tough for young Kiwis heading up to Euroland, trialling, hoping to get a deal, so far from home. Need some luck maybe, and the mental strength to tough it out. The often repeated story of a lonely Bill Tuiloma, traipsing around cold Europe trialling and Olympic Marseille basically being his last option before so nearly throwing it in & returning to NZ. Maybe an Oli Whyte for example, who's had 2 cracks at Europe now, may have had more luck up there, with an Ole/Torslanda type support network. Maybe.

The Ole kids having a little base in Sweden can't be a bad thing at all. And if that helps even more young Kiwis get an opportunity in Europe as a by product, all good stuff for NZ Football.
