Commentator last night reckoned Elliot has left Xanthi - anything out there to corroborate that, or was he talking shark like the rest of his commentary?

Personally, I prefer neutral commentary where some information and pronounciation is not correct over commentators who only commentate from the perspective of one team

Given what else they said about NZ football, I'd take it with a rather large grain of salt haha

That whole 'soccer' thing made me think he was talking to Brendan Telfer.
Obviously the poor buggar was being led astray by a non-football football expert :-)

Transfermarkt has him listed as a 'free agent'.

He would have been looking at a team info sheet when he made that comment about Elliot. So the question is, who supplied him the player info? Someone from the NZ camp ? Or other less reliable source.

Xanthi have a new head coach Jaime Monroy, Portuguese, was coaching Leeds U23. Bielsa disciple, aka Huddo?

He also had a short stint as head coach at Sydney Olympic in 2017.

Mods perhaps chuck this thread into Wellington Phoenix.

Not sure if soon to be 36 year old Themi is still at Levadiakos in the Greek 2nd tier, or maybe retired. Reads below that 2nd tier in Greece has been restructured again.

Wonder if with 36 teams (24 more teams), is just semi-pro now?  Anyway likely just added to the reasons why Elliot & all the Aussies left/were let go by Xanthi.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021%E2%80%9322_Super_League_Greece_2
The 2021–22 Super League 2 will be the third season of the Super League 2, the second-tier Greek professional league for association football clubs, since the restructuring of the Greek football league system.

The season is expected to start in October 2021. The league will be conducted of 36 teams and two groups, this is due to the restructure and abolishment of the Football League. The league will also see the introduction of B Teams of Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK Athens and Panathinaikos. B Teams are ineligible for promotion.

Bubble Callan Elliot is back. His delivery into the box has been top class these last few weeks. I honestly think he is the best RB in the A-League atm.

No doubt whatsoever to be honest. Right up the top of the league in terms of assists, and from RB too. An excellent achievement given he's alongside the likes of Tilio, Goodwin & Noone for that accolade, and even then those blokes are all wingers for their respective club sides.

Very impressed with the physical side of his game too. He has more of a presence about him, seems a lot stronger and is perhaps even a touch quicker. That, and his defensive side of the game has come on in leaps and bounds. Perfect example that piece of defensive work on Ayongo yesterday - nips the ball off him, but then leads him on a merry little dance all the way down the touchline, Ayongo had no clue. Was probably the best bit of individual skill on show yesterday afternoon.

Hopefully he can keep up this form the rest of the season, it's been a pleasure to watch his progression.

Good on the lad for gaining the interest, but is the club working to extend the contracts of the performing players? To lose Elliot or Lewis or even Sail for nothing would be disappointing and there wouldn't even be compensation fees for any of those given they're all over-23s.

If the contract renewals are handed out solely by the manager (ie Talay) then his future being uncertain might directly impact players leaving on frees. Maybe Gill has the authority, but the uncertainty of who'll be coaching next season will almost definitely be a factor in the thinking of these guys. The last thing needed with a coach leaving is an exodus of the key performers.

Elliott has the magical UK passport (Scottish born) which is a big help for getting a British club gig.

But yes Lewis would be the biggest loss, especially if he left on a free. Not many guys like him around the NZ or even Aussie scene. Perhaps Narelle doesn't want to leave her NZ media job. She didn't follow him to Scun-thorpe.

I'd like to see us sell Callan to a top half SPL team like Hearts, HIBS, St Mirren etc. in a season or two. I feel with some more experience under his belt he could excel there and if he plays his cards right, eventually make it to the Championship or another strong European league.

Elliott has already had a season in Greece (where he sat on the pine the whole time), after Poppa took him to Xanthi. Gut feel is he won't re-sign for the Nix, if a SPL club offers him a deal.

He'll be 24 in July, his mate Waine has gone north, I reckon he'll be keen to go now as well. You will also have more suitors when you are coming off contract, than on. The SPL is full of ex ALM Aussies, doing well.

Elliott's mentor Paul Ifill will also have a few lower league UK contacts that might be handy for him.

After that Xanthi experience, hopefully he bases his decision on where he will play the most.

Yipe he won't want a repeat of that, and I'm sure will be the main trigger to any decision - where am I likely to get playing mins. As always with these moves north, you want the timing right plus the club that best suits

He will be older & wiser after the Xanthi frustrating experience. But if he was prepared to make the leap to Greece, after only 9 ALM games, heading to the land of his birth (if it is the SPL) 2 full ALM seasons later, shouldn't phase him too much.

He's in form, and who knows an offer from the UK may not be around next season. Maybe like Waine, Cacace & Rojas - is a big draw to play in his parent's homeland.

And lastly all of his 10 team mates that started the 2019, U20 WC QF against Colombia are now playing abroad. Woud, Pijnaker, Stanger, Stensness, Cacace, Bell, Singh, McCowatt, Just & Waine. Plus bench players Mata & Wilkins. Apart from Woud, abroad is Europe. Elliott can't help but be aware of that little bit of trivia now. Last man left, turn out the lights!

As spotted by Doloras. No short term Nix deal, or Auckland FC move it seems. Scottish heritage, and SPL always rumoured as potential location. Motherwell currently 9th in the SPL. Looks like they play with a back 3/5.

About bloody time! Has spent far too long out of the game after having a pretty solid campaign for us last term.

Hopefully he can come in and make an impact. Might not get his international spot back for the coming international window, but if he does well there's a long term place for him at RB for the AW's.

Last of Des’s 2019 U20 WC starting 11 to sign in Europe. Okay he did have a season in Greece with Poppa at Xanthi but didn’t play a minute. Likely the first time that’s happened with a WC U20 side, first XI - all making it to Euroland

It might be awhile before he gets any mins for the Motherwell first team, and is deemed SPL match fit.

Last started a competitive football match when the Nix lost 2-0 in Adelaide, Elimination Final 5th May last year - so nearly 8 months ago. Though later did get a 20 min cameo off the bench for the AWs against Sweden in June. But unless he's been quietly training hard the last month or so with Motherwell, likely will have to bid his time.

Hopefully with time they learn to spell the internationalist's name correctly. Like Motherwell, not Motherwel.

https://www.motherwellfc.co.uk/2024/01/22/callan-elliot-joins-until-end-of-the-season/

The New Zealand internationalist makes the move to Fir Park, having most recently been with Wellington Phoenix.

24-year-old Elliot was born in Dumfries but moved to New Zealand at seven years old and has spent the entirety of career abroad until now.

“Callan has good quality and has impressed out in the A-League,” manager Stuart Kettlewell said.

I’m trying build a squad here and we have been looking to add quality and depth in this area of the park. Callan ticks both of those boxes so it’s great to get him in the squad.

“He’s an international player and someone I think can add a lot to the team.”

He made his professional debut with Kiwi side Tasman United where he made 17 appearances and attracted interest before subsequently moving to Wellington in 2018.

Over two spells at the club, Eliot made 53 appearances for Phoenix senior side before leaving the club in March 2023 having failed to agree on a new contract with the club.

“It’s great to say I’m a Motherwell player,” Elliot added.

I’ve been training hard and I’m looking forward to get going. The boys are great and have made me feel very welcome so far.”

The full-back is also a New Zealand internationalist
