Maybe some signing news from next week, or at least some news on any domestic NZ players offered trials.

https://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/news/wellington-phoenix-player-and-staff-update
Phoenix players Joshua Laws and Jaushua Sotirio, as well as Coach Ufuk Talay, Assistant Coach Giancarlo Italiano and Head Physio Ben Venn are now in managed isolation in Auckland for the required 14-day period; they are scheduled to travel to Wellington on Monday 16 August to join the New Zealand-based players currently at training.

Still completing his 2 weeks MIQ in Aussie, post the Olympics. Likely had to leave on an Aus Olympic flight from Japan. Being special charter flights unlikely was allowed to jump on a NZ one, and neck some beers enroute to ChCh.

So with TT bubble shut, he'll have 2 more weeks MIQ to follow in NZ. Yuck.

That's unless yes, those mud raking WSW rumours have some substance.

Piscopo completed his MIQ today and is at his home in Melbourne. From what I heard from a pretty reliable source the WSW rumour is not true but doesn't mean he's not going somewhere else but I doubt it

Pennington is who has been signed to replace Devlin. Wouldn't expect to see another CDM unless they're replacing Matt Ridenton as depth.

I saw someone on the Northern League forums said a kid from Melville and Eastern Suburbs are going on trial with the Phoenix.

Campbell Brown (CB/fullback) and Moh Reynolds (striker/winger) have been probably the U20s playing the most for Melville in Northern League, and both involved in U20 national team.

Eastern Suburbs have a few U20 national team kids that have been playing a lot, namely Aaryan Raj (centre back), but also Brooklyn Baker and Wilson Souphanthavong, though those two play less. Ryan Verney, who’s a year older than those players has also played a lot, but the most obvious young Suburbs player, Campbell Strong is already going to a US university so won’t be him.

Obviously any trial plans would have been scuppered for the foreseeable future, but I’d expect it’d be likelier that any of these guys would be trialing for the reserves more so than the first team.

What are the Weenix likely to be doing over the summer, once the NL Championship phase finishes in December.

Just train every day with the first team squad, plus odd hitout against Ole/Wests?

A League will happen. Maybe delayed start, maybe a season hub start in WA, SA, Tassie and/or QLD.

League start date still 10 weeks away. Vaccinations have cranked up in Aussie. By mid November way things are tracking 70-80% of adult NSW popn (maybe all of Aussie) should be double vaccinated. There will be more freedom and movement once reach that bench mark. Majority of popn will be demanding it.

But yeah do see Piscopo as some risk of wanting a release. Not so sure he wants to return to Welly. But if so Nix should definitely demand a fee. Hopefully I'm wrong and he's preparing for 2 weeks more MIQ in NZ.

Piscopo might also be, in accordance with the club, waiting to see how the situation evolves. If the Nix have go to back to Australia, they will probably do that fairly soon, so no point in him coming over here and quarantine, only to potentially having to do it all over again in 4-5 weeks' time

He also has that calf injury issue that he has had for about a year. Missed half the Nix games and all the Olympic games because of it. Even if he was here, he probably wouldn't be training. So maybe they have an arrangement where he is getting that sorted, and he is with family in Melbourne while doing that.

I would think so. With some restrictions of course but I'd assume they'd be the same as anyone else's work.

im gonna say probably not, these are the current level 3 lock down rules, id expect they'll be tightened if we drop to level 3 this evening.

Travel and personal movement
At Alert Level 3, you legally must stay within your household bubble whenever you are not at work or school. You can expand this to:
  • connect with close family and whānau
  • bring in caregivers, or
  • support isolated people.
It is important to protect your bubble. Keep your bubble exclusive and only include people where it will keep you and them safe and healthy. If anyone within your bubble feels unwell, they legally must immediately self-isolate from everyone else within the bubble.

Physical distancing
Keep your distance when outside your home.

You should keep a distance of at least:

  • 2 metres in public and retail stores, like supermarkets
  • 1 metre in controlled environments, like workplaces and schools.
You can travel locally
You can travel within your local area, for example going to work or school, shopping, or getting exercise. Your local area means the area near your home that you regularly visit for essential services. What is considered local will differ depending on where you live. City dwellers may have a supermarket or dairy close by. If you live rurally, you may need to take a drive to reach these.

Public transport can continue to operate with strict health and safety requirements.

Travel between regions is restricted
At Alert Level 3 travel between regions is heavily restricted.

If there is an Alert Level 3 boundary, we will publish information on this website about which travel is permitted.
 Gatherings and events
Gatherings of up to 10 people can go ahead, but only for:
  • wedding and civil union ceremonies
  • funerals and tangihanga.
Physical distancing and public health measures legally must be maintained.

Public venues
Public venues legally must close at Alert Level 3. This includes libraries, museums, cinemas, food courts, gyms, pools, playgrounds and markets.
 Exercise, sport and recreation
Now is not the time to take up new activities, or expose yourself or your bubble to any risk. You can do low-risk recreation activities in your local area.

They might just need to train in groups of 10 or less.
But that won't be hard. do they even have 10 players available to train?
They probably don't have more than 20.

Hardly surprising with NZ in Level 4. Someone speculated that some youngsters from the Northern League (Melville & Birko) were to trial??

Welnix took a big financial hit last season, and this season's start looks similarily sharkhouse. So why contract more players, and pay their wages when they can't even train. Might as well leave the extra financial wages drain as late as Talay will tolerate, to get a full squad.

See that the Europen transfer window is to close 11pm BST (6pm ET) this Tuesday August 31. So after that might be a few uncontracted visa players floating around needing a home, prepared to consider travelling down under to a country that has loads of Covid complications moving to, for players and their families.

Looking at how late last season began, most of our signings were announced from October and onwards.

So would expect major and most of the signings to be announced from late September or something.

But that was for a early January start date. Late September will be leaving it fine, if league is to stay with a 30th Oct kick off. I’d say negotiations are well underway with many vacant spots, but no use signing anyone if can’t train.

Maybe some announcements as soon as Level 2 reached. End of Euro summer transfer window Wednesday here, should create some opportunities.

Also could be a slightly harder sell than last year for Europeans, last year no crowds in Europe and little freedom to do whatever and Aus was pretty normal, but now it’s kinda opposite, with NZ/NSW/Vic in lockdown and Europe easing up

Having to do 2 weeks MIQ will definitely be starting to look unattractive now, for most visa players with families, given yes Europe has a lot more freedom than same time last year.

Have to say that with life almost back to normal here in the UK and Europeans being able to travel across Europe, a locked down Australasia looks very unattractive. Europe is looking ahead, not back while NZ and Aus are where we were this time last year in Europe. Tortoise (Europe) and hare (NZ) analogies come to mind here.

It's been great being able to go to packed football games here again.

Dude, the crowing of the British at getting down to only killing a hundred or so people every day from COVID is not a speed thing, it’s a choice.
Anyway I’ll put this in off topic so as to not go all in here. But that fewer people have died in over a year than are dying on a daily basis, just in Britain, shows the different priorities of the countries.

With an appalling 130k plus deaths from covid in Britain I guess that you would not want look back. If we use your analogy the tortoise would be well and truly dead by now.

Boris Johnson's government have successfully sold the line that it doesn't matter if hundreds of people continue to die every week if they can keep going to packed football games. We know what happens to a country where "it doesn't matter if those people die as long as my life is normal" becomes accepted.

Yep, this is a temporary blip in our plan - which is to re-open next year without having deaths or economic and civil catastrophes.  I'd much rather be where we are than the UK, most of Europe, or the US.

Talking to friends and rellies in Europe regularly, I see their "business as usual" mindset as normalising what they see as inevitable.   Not very different to ScoMo saying that since NSW cannot control the outbreak until it burns itself out, anyone who refuses to join the "live with it" bandwagon is stuck in the back of the cave refusing to see the daylight.
Yes we are taking the long torturous road to elimination but that's because we've only vaccinated a third of our population (or so).  Once we're at 2/3 + of our population vaccinated, we may see fewer if any bad outcomes (deaths) in future outbreaks.  We have, however, also managed to get through the outbreaks to date with fewer deaths per head of population than most EU countries.

Scott Morrison (The Aussie PM One) is an absolute plank that can't even control his own state premiers. What is the point of a PM if they can't even run their own country? And further as a distraction he again'attacks" ours about our handling of this new outbreak. The guy needs to wake up and smell his own roses before he tries to smell ours.

"can't even control his own state premiers".
I think you need to learn something about how the Commonwealth of Australia actually works.
The federal government does not "control" the state governments.
I totally agree with your general sentiments on Morrison though.
