All Whites went to Myanmar in 2015, and should've returned with Hudson's first win, but instead finished with a frustrating 1-1 draw. Match featured Shane Smeltz's last AWs goal, and debuts for Tom Doyle, Liam Higgins, Harshae Raniga and Alex Rufer. They really (really) should have won this game... When Wynne turned out to be ineligible, so did Burfoot as well as Van Den Broek.
Van Den Broek had a mother who wasn't kiwi, but lived in NZ for 5 years and gained citizenship.
I think (Correct me if wrong) this impacted Van Den Broek and he was never called up again. Never rated him that much anyway.
He had a younger brother who was a keeper who also got himself a passport but has since fallen off the radar.
Passport doesn't guarantee eligibility right? Cause Wynne had one, he got it when I was at school with him and then 2015 happened...
Actually, Van den Broek IS eligible but NZ Football got flustered after Wynnegate and deemed him ineligible themselves, without actually checking properly, because he didn't meet the clause that Wynne failed on. However VDB didn't need to meet that clause (5 years after age 18) because he is a NZ citizen from birth (as his mum was a NZ citizen not from descent when he was born), despite never actually living in NZ.
Looking back at the 82 team, it looks like a number of good players were left out (Nelson, de Graaf, etc).
The folks on here who have good memories of these times; could you make an XI, or even a squad, of players who didn't go to Spain? Who were the controversial omissions?
Nelson was 35 and De Graff about 31. Probably too old as strikers. Although Sam Malcolmson was a defender at 35 and Brian Turner was 32 and a midfielder.

So why would that be an issue? Was it an unsanctioned trip?
Clive Campbell played the first round matches but was left out of the next phase (all sorts of rumours why, but ultimately Billy McClure took his place). Ron Armstrong pulled out for work reasons - the training commitments from late 1980 onwards were pretty full on, a number of the players were actually unemployed because it was too hard keeping a job in between all the travel (others had very supportive employers). From memory the Merdeka squads were essentially seen as B teams, so perhaps going there put Davie out of the rotation for the full squad? that said, Wilson had a record breaking campaign so I think he justified selection. Another one to consider was Ken Cresswell - didn't play qualifiers (was on bench for game v Saudi in Auckland) but then came into the squad during build up games and really took his chance, coming in when Grant Turner got injured and playing all 3 games in Spain. If only there was a feature length documentary film that captured all this...

No it was a sanctioned trip , there were some weird politics going on at the time. Davie said he received a phone call before the trip basically telling him that he wouldn't be selected in future if he went but decided to go anyway as he wasn't guaranteed a spot in any future squads.
So......there was an NZFA-approved 'B' team sent to Malaysia or somewhere that, logically thinking, was not run by Adshead or Fallon?
Somehow this tour coincided with some AW match or camp? Otherwise what's the bother?
If true, then presumably whoever the selector was (Coach B) thought he was Billy Big Balls, and selected players who were in the AW frame? Which seems both fair enough (as he would want the best team possible) and short sighted (why put players in a difficult position?) at the same time.
But then, why would a fringe AW go, and risk a potential World Cup spot? Was there a financial incentive for this trip?

Afternoon all, Here are highlights (in the absolute loosest sense of the word) from the 2016 Nations Cup Final. It's difficult viewing - but I watched the whole game so you didn't have to! Even knowing the result of the penalty shootout it was still remarkably nerve-wracking watching it again. Normally I'd sign off with "enjoy", but this is probably one for All Whites tragics rather than football purists...

Today is the fourth anniversary of the intercontinental playoff loss away in Peru, so also marks four whole years (ie a normal whole World Cup cycle) since the last competitive game the All Whites played.

Of that 23 man squad for the last meaningful fixture, only 5 (Boxall, Marinovic, Reid, Smith and Wood) are in the squad set to play Gambia, and only Boxall, Roux, Tuiloma and Wood are at the same clubs as at that time, though Roux left and went back.
Not only is it one of biggest gaps ever between competitive games, but there’s still nothing set in stone as to when the next qualifying will start. Nothing is formalised for either the OFC Qualifiers, just that it’s in March and in Qatar, or the intercontinental playoff. For reference, by the end of this window (tomorrow) 147 of the 210 FIFA members will have finished qualifying, before we even know who we will play our first game against, and 12 teams will have already qualified for Qatar.
We should theoretically get one home game next year, though that could well be it through until to the 2024 OFC Nations Cup, such is the difficulty and rarity of hosting games. If that’s the case, assuming OFC let’s us host that tournament given we were supposed to host the 2020 version, we could have the genuine possibility (if we don’t get the World Cup money, though we only hosted two friendlies after 2010) of having only one home game from November 2017 to June 2024. Since November 2013, the All Whites have played as many games in PNG as in NZ (5) and more in the former Soviet Union (6).
Though the bright side of this is that the All Whites are 8 years unbeaten at home, last losing at home on the 20th November 2013. Senegal are the only team to be able to match that, that have played 5 or more games at home in that time, and the All Whites are also the only team to be 8 years unbeaten anywhere on home continent, so every thunderstorm cloud has a faint silver lining.
Nice analysis. Hay made a passing mention I think in an AV article, that OFC maybe close to finalising details of the March tourney.
Also I have some faith that some sort of competitive OFC comp (hopefully as part of a AFC type Nations League setup), will pop up from 2023 onwards. Has been some cryptic messages on the OFC website, about work in that space. They know the current setup (made worst yes with Covid) is shark house, as do FIFA. A Global Nations League is Infantino's baby. Covid has put it on the back burner for nearly 2 years. He's openly said minnow nations don't play enough, and I'll expect there will be some moves to help out the OFC teams re more games from 2023 onwards.
If no OFC team (presumably AWs) qualifies for Qatar, those moves should hopefully come forward as international Covid travel restrictions ease. Hopefully something will happen, as will be fudgeed if this current crop of talented NZ footballers barely play in NZ, for the AWs.
Out of interest I'm typing this from Lima. Arrived 3 weeks ago. Doco on one of their sports channels last night all about 15th Nov 2017. They just call it '15/11' here. Has it's own little moniker, on the back of qualifying for their first world cup since Espana 1982 (ie 36 years).
My Spanish is muy basico, but a 2 hour long doco, interviewing everyone from the players, to parents of, to pitchside camera men, to players from 1982, to 14 year kids living in the countryside watching on the telly, to Peruvians watching in Auckland, and the emotions they all went through that night (their time). Obviously for them it really was the 'game that stopped a nation'. Only realising now the pressure/expectation on the players especially. They analysed the first goal over about 10 minutes!! The scorer Jefferson Farfan, actually has a local movie out about his career. Kid from rural poverty, who made it big in football, blah blah.
They also have a huge cut throat WC qualifier in Caracas tomorrow. Win against bottom team Venzuela and they will still be right in the mix, when qualifiers resume again in January.
