Would have been nice to have some of the older experienced NWL given a look at rather than just Ffdp, I get this is suppose to be a pathway however it can be detrimental for equally talented players missing out and have quality. Takeda, Fraser, Robertson, Nicholson, Lake, Ward, Bacon,Hiraro to name a few

Big ask for people to up sticks and leave their families & jobs for 3 months. These contracts don't really pay much. Much easier for the younger players.

Contracts are 23 weeks so more like early April return.
Long time away for the older ones…

I was (am) keen to the Nix women play but I'm less keen on seeing a team full of 17-20 yr olds, seems like we've missed the opportunity to sign a few in their early to mid 20's who have had a few years of the National League at least to add some experience.
Perhaps I'm  missing something and that's just my perception rather than the reality.

I do kind of agree, It's exciting to see this team coming together, Lots of young talent. But am concerned about how competitive they will be with so many 17 and 18 yr olds.
I wonder is this a NZF directive. And is seen more of a pathway for the next 2 seasons while there involved, than a team trying to play in a competition. Early days still, but they have got to be careful because a team that struggles to get results also struggles to get public support and/or sponsorship.
I hope I'm wrong. There is generally a lot of youth in the ALW, but that is generally balanced with some older experienced players
The coaches are going to have there work cut out, that for sure.

The younger players are generally more gifted technically, I think these signing recognise the fact these players have a higher ceiling, so get them in early and start building them.

Are multi year contracts and transfer fees something that happens much in womens football?

Would have to disagree with this statement alot lack experience some signed really haven't impacted at National Woman's League, age group reps/Ffdp dont necessarily mean gifted or talented? just right place right time and who you know. Stigma for NZ football to bottleneck and enhance certain players overlooking a vast majority of others hence why players look elsewhere. This is still a pilot squad so heres hoping we can learn and grow and not be so narrow minded. Even a nationwide trial process would keep the standard and visibility of the selection process. I do hope this younger squad will take the experience and develop, and we can learn from this for the next selection process.

makes sense. I guess the whole 11 only NZ players has made it really difficult to include both young/gifted and more mature/experienced NZers. And with the Aussie signings, its probably quite difficult to attract experienced ALW players to the new Nix team of mostly younger players. More likely to sign young promising Aus players on the fringe. Be interesting to see who else they sign from here.

I'm worried that those in charge are out of their depth leading to the signing players who may not be up to it.

On the flip side here in the UK if a women's team gets spanked it doesn't get the emotions going like a 7-0 hiding in the Premiership does.

...or they are doing their best to pull together a brand new team with less than half a preseason, base themselves in another country, all while navigating in a global pandemic in a side of the sport which in itself is still developing. But yea, go on be disappointed. ffs.

Fully agree!
They are up against it for sure but let’s get behind them.
Also those referencing the National Women’s League probably don’t realise it’s a not a very strong comp and most of the Nix players have been selected from NZ ferns camps & U20 camps where they’ve been tested against the best NZ can offer.
But yes obviously a young side with an eye on the future!

That being said there is still a vast majority of players whom have competed internationally and at a higher level also whom have not recently attended  FFDP or u17/u20 over recent cycles… who currently still play in NWL. I hope this squad can compete at this level and  bring in additional mature experienced Aussie players to balance the team out. Great development for the younger NZ girls to test themselves and being paid at the same time is a bonus too

Yep and it’s  hard on those players in early - mid 20’s but as NZ Football have stumped up a lot of $$ for this to happen they are looking at it through a 2023 WC & 2024 Olympics lens

Just a suggestion and a completely unqualified one on my part, maybe it is easier career wise to sign up young NZ players to go and play in Australia?

We know womens football and particularly the W-League and a skint team like the Nix does not pay well, a lot of those in the NWL might have families/day jobs/etc., so perhaps it is easier for the young players in the 17-20 range to go off on an adventure for a few months?

So 7 of the starting 11 line up will be Australian leaving only 4 kiwis to start. I think the FFA rules a a little tough and one sided but Australia does have more women players playing at a higher level then the kiwis to some extent. So fielding 7 Aus players just might work out for us.

7 Aus players don’t have to start?
It’s just 7 in the squad.
Imagine they will be giving Kiwis as much game time as possible!

Yeah, being away from home in Australia for some months would have ruled out some of the older players in the NWL such as Annalie Longo who has two school age daughters and a job as Women's Development Officer with NZ Football.
Longo hadn't re-signed with Melbourne Victory although they probably wanted her back as she was an important player for them in winning the league.
So she'd probably already decided she'd rather spend Xmas and summer holidays with her daughters in Canterbury and working for NZ Football (she's working for NZ Football from her home base in Kaiapoi).

Longo has had ongoing injury issues for a couple of years and carried one into the Olympics which meant she played no part. Given the rigours of the professional game and the looming midfield talent she’s probably considering retirement and focusing on her NZF development role.

Not true.
Annalie is playing for the Pride in the NWL this summer and at age 30 is most likely looking forward to the home World Cup in 20 months.

She did play in the Olympics in July but just one appearance as a sub vs. USA, so may well have been unfit then.
She played in 11 of Victory's 14 matches last W-League season in winning the title.
Started and played 109 minutes in the W-League Final against Sydney FC in April.

I’d say there will be a clean out of the older Ferns ahead of the WC.
Noises JK is making and given the style she wants to play it will more suited to the younger up and comers v  the 30+

And that applies to the Aussie media and the people running the game over there too. There has been plenty of coverage of the Phoenix women and how the team's coming together across the ditch.
On the official A-League Women website, six of the fifteen stories on the news homepage are about the Phoenix Women:
