But the question now is how many minutes will they play over the next four weeks, before they meet again in November, where Hay is expecting to have more All Whites fixtures and an announcement is due in the next week or so.

Definitely don't ignore 'or so' here. Just based on the fact that they are pretty firm on the fact they'll playing in November and next weekend is two weeks out from the start of the window, which was when this window's matches were announced back in September.

Seems like Jordan now unavailable. Looks like they already have 2 Nov friendlies (Albania & Belarus) leading into Arab Cup.

Kuwait have 1 friendly locked in against Lithuania. Uzbekistan still free, as are likes of Thailand & Malaysia.

As mentioned elsewhere a few UEFA teams with at least one free match slot, plus some uncommitted CONCACAF teams like Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemela etc. But overall limited options.

Shaping up to be quite a hard and tricky inter continental play off. If NZ draws CONMEBOL it will most likely be either Colombia, Ecuador or Uruguay. Either 30+ Temperatures in Barranquilla against Cuardado, Borja and James Rodriguez, against Ecuador in 3400m altitude in Quito where Argentina and Brazil struggle at or Cavani or Suarez in a hostile atmosphere in Montevideo. In Asia, either Japan or Australia will finish 3rd in group B and you would think they will win the play off against Group A third place (Currently Lebanon). CONCAF is probably our easiest route, but Canada who currently hold play off spot shouldn’t be taken lightly, whose players play in similar or even higher leagues than all whites. It will be a challenge, no doubt about it. So next few windows of internationals will be key, and i would suggest to play strongest possible squad as well..

Any CONMEBOL team would be a fridge too far for the AWs, even Bolivia/Venezuela, so I’d write off them straight away if we get CONMEBOL again. Even Australia’s golden generation with lineup full of top level European players only managed to get through on penalties in 2006 against Uruguay, after losing to them in 2002.

Canada I reckon would be tougher than Australia, they have starters at the current champions of the Bundesliga (Davies) and Ligue 1 (David), and would be at lowest MLS players, but they’re a good chance at automatic qualification, as only Mexico and USA are probably better across the board, so CONCACAF could Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica which would be a decent draw.

Australia had won 11 in a row but that was against Chinese Taipei, Nepal etc, they lost to Japan in their first tough game. If they lose in Saudi they could bottle things, but the other group isn’t as great so they’d back themselves at least the playoff. Either way, a playoff against Australia would be a great spectacle, if not the easiest possible game.

Hopefully the draw gets done soon so we can know what we’re up against.

Barranquilla/Cartagena are like saunas. Proper sweaty hot. I was there around New Years a few years back, but I think it's hot all year round on the Caribbean Coast.

Can see why Colombia take home games there for a real advantage, rather than temperate cool Bogota.

If you want a South American city not that different from NZ/Euro climes & not too much culture shock - Montevideo. But yeah hopefully avoid the CONMEBOL pool ball.

I am going to be honest with my opinion here and I am putting myself at risk of sounding like a Twit.

I am really hoping the OFC Qualifiers tournament gets cancelled and OFC just nominates us as the highest rank team (FIFA rankings) to progress to the intercontinental playoffs.

That way we can spend November, January and March playing six meaningful fixtures.

No disrespect to the OFC nations, they're improving by the minute and teams like PNG, Solomon Islands, Tahiti and NC are always tough sides to beat, but once we know if it's either CONCACAF, AFC or CONNMEBOL as OFC's playoff opposition, I think the January and March windows will be very crucial in preparing against sides from whoever faces OFC's highest rank team.

But this is my opinion only, there might be some FIFA ruling that may go against this.

Basically agree. Think we are doubtful to have friendlies in that extra one off January window. Would likely struggle to get a team together (doubt likes of Wood, Singh, Thomas etc would be released by their clubs), and could be even less teams than now, available to play. UEFA ain't observing that window.

But yes that March window is somewhat crucial being last window before Intercontinental Playoffs in June 2022. Without being arrogant seems a waste in a way to have that whole window playing OFC teams. The mooted tourney still hasn't been formally announced.

Some good news as mentioned by AV though, is that Intercontinental Playoffs (IP) are likely to be late June. So chance to sneak in a warmup friendly early June. If Socceroos automatically qualify, and AWs host the first IP game, perfect chance to host Socceroos in a warmup 7-10 days prior.

Understand the premise of keeping together are best players every window from now on as well, but I wouldn’t mind having a second string team of fringe All Whites playing against the likes of Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti if we draw CONCACAF, or even if we draw AFC, I wouldn’t mind games against Philippines and Hong Kong and featuring the likes of Francis de Vries, Kyle Adams, Deklan Wynne etc just for that January Window.

Back to normal with decent opposition and our best team for that March window as well as like you say, a few warm up games for June.

Yeah again some merit. Certainly the 3 Helsingor guys will likely be twiddling their thumbs in late January, in the midst of a nearly 3 month mid winter break.

Lots of moving parts. Is March OFC Tourney going to happen, who do OFC draw as their Intercontinental Playoff opponent, what other teams are looking for a friendly in January, when will NZ based staffers like Hay no longer need to do MIQ, same for A League based AW players etc etc etc.

Also how much cash does NZ have. I presume these friendlies come at a cost. I note seems that NZF will be shelling out cash on games for the Ferns, every international window they have between now and the 2023 WWC.

All this bearing in mind Nov AWs friendlies still not yet confirmed. So looking ahead to January/March probably a bit early.

It annoys me that we are forever left in the dark by NZF.  As you are probably aware, I try my hardest to watch the AWs (and Ferns) when they are nearish the UK but it's hard to organise leave, visas etc with so little warning/security that it's going ahead.  It's been like this since I left NZ in '06.

We all know NZF can be pretty sharkhouse at times but it seems like they're doing they're best to organise fixtures given the circumstances, I'm sure they'd love to have something locked in as well but it's just not that easy.

True, but I dislike how they talk as though they have things tied up when from the outside looking in, they are not. Really, matches should have been sorted long before now.

Covid is a good excuse right now but think back to 2019, NZF wasn't exactly proactive then either.

If we are going to make assumptions on NZF’s recent fixtures, another thing to take note is the fact that Curacao actually had no idea they were available for friendlies until June 2021 when they were taking part in WCQ playoff matches against Panama.

From my understanding to sort out international fixtures requires a number of factors, including cost, travel, and not disrupting the seasons of players who have to self isolate upon return.

Blaming NZF for being poor for past mistakes is one thing, but holding onto that saying they they’re unorganised and can’t get their crap together, especially during a world wide pandemic which literally stops half the squad from travelling is another.

I’m expecting a few announcements this week for friendlies. For me, it’s probably just ironing out the finer details as well as making sure all the COVID-19 protocols are ticked off.

All the European teams that were mentioned earlier as available have since organised friendlies, so it’ll probably have to be either AFC or CONCACAF. List below shows all  the teams (except those we played last week) in and around the top 130 in the rankings that are currently available in November.

The three under matchday 1 mean they are only available for that slot of the window and already have a game organised for matchday 2. As travel is a factor, it’s worth noting Uzbekistan’s game is away in Georgia, Kyrgyz Republic’s is in Bahrain and Tajikistan’s is away in Kazakhstan.

Matchday 1
Uzbekistan - ranked 84

Again limited options on that list but I'd take a AFC/CONCACAF mix in lieu of OFC having next June's playoff opponent confirmed.

You would think Hay and other NZ staffers wouldn't have remained in Middle East, unless Nov games were highly likely.

That's unless they are struggling to find MIQ spots pre Xmas, plus wanted to do some scouting of Qatar venues etc pre that mooted March OFC tourney.

Yeah I was beginning to get a bit worried that this late in the piece the chances of November game might be out the window. But they did mention still on the cards in their announcement about the rankings yesterday. Plus the previous fixtures were announced on a Saturday. So still holding out for a fixture vs Thailand or something to be declared later today. Thanks for the list!

In terms of logistics, it could potentially make sense to have our games in the UAE (if that's where Hay and co are) and to go for Kyrgyzstan if they're en route to Bahrain, and Palestine who would be able to get there time/distance wise.  Uzbekistan would be good but they'll be heading in the other direction if their match is in Georgia.

There are a number of stadia in UAE that could fit the bill, so there'd be no clash if the UAE was using one themselves.  And potentially a decent number of Kiwi ex-pats who could turn out to watch.

Good to hear. Does the article say who in particular, I don’t have premium.

African World Cup qualifying still has 40 teams involved, and CAF has only 54 members, so would be from:
Sierra Leone - ranked 107
Comoros - 132
Burundi - 141
Lesotho - 144
Eswatini - 146
Gambia - 147
Botswana - 149
South Sudan - 167
Mauritius - 172
Chad - 180
São Tomé & Principe - 191
Somalia - 195
Seychelles - 199
Eritrea - 203

Alright team, click baity as heck and doesn't name the actual side. Still good to know there will be games next month.

Fixture confirmed: All Whites line up opponent for November
The All Whites are set to face novel opponents in the upcoming FIFA window, with a rare look at an African team.

Off the back of their games in Bahrain this month, the Herald understands that New Zealand Football have confirmed one game against an African nation in November, with another fixture still to be finalised.

The match will be played in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, where coach Danny Hay and his support staff have been based for the last few weeks.

The All Whites have played teams from the world's second-largest continent only twice in the last decade.

The most recent was in June 2018, when a young side lost 2-1 to Kenya in Mumbai, with Sarpreet Singh marking his first international start with a goal.

The other was a clash with South Africa in Auckland in May 2014 (0-0), overseen by caretaker coach Neil Emblen, notable as the last match before Anthony Hudson was appointed.

With the November window originally earmarked for Oceania World Cup qualifying, it has been difficult to secure opposition at relatively short notice. Many European and Asian teams are involved in World Cup qualifying, while most others already have friendly matches locked in.

But NZF's main imperative was to bring the All Whites together again, and they will have at least one match next month, before two more fixtures in January ahead of March's Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament in Qatar.

The All Whites' positive results against Curacao (2-1) and Bahrain (1-0) are reflected in the latest FIFA rankings, with the team rising 10 places to No. 111.

There is still a long way to go, but no other nation made a bigger leap over the last month.

While rankings don't bring too many practical advantages, aside from seedings at World Cups, they are a boost for reputation and status and there is a desire within NZF to see the All Whites return to a position that reflects their collective ability.

New Zealand were ranked No.49 after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and briefly hit a high of No.55 in 2013.

They were last inside the world's top 90 nations (No.88) in July 2016 but have suffered from spells of inactivity since then. The All Whites haven't been within the top 100 since June 2017 (No.95).

Australia currently sit at No.34, the third highest in the Asian confederation, only behind Iran (22) and Japan (28).

There are only six non-European teams (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Mexico and USA) inside the top 20, which is headed by Belgium.

The 2 extra fixtures lined up possibly for January also is great news. Presume that will be in that extra January FIFA window. NZF going all out to try give Hay games he needs.

Lots of players will be in their off seasons (MLS/USL, Norway, Sweden, Finland etc) or mid winter breaks (Denmark), that Jan window. But not sure likes of Wood would be available for those mooted games? I understand UEFA not recognising that extra window, ie they don't need it for their international WC qualifying programme?? Would Burnley have to release Wood for example?

Wonder if is a chance by then (is late January) that A League players could travel to likes of UAE/Qatar without having to do MIQ upon return. That maybe what Hay is hoping for those Jan games, try and get Rojas, Barba, Payne, Sail, Waine etc involved into this AWs program as soon as he can.

I just realised the African Cup of Nations is in January, so this November window is the last chance for games before that tournament. Of the 24 teams involved in AFCON, all but 2 are part of the remaining 40 teams in CAF World Cup qualifying and those two teams are Sierra Leone and Comoros, so they’d be a good bet for at least one of the games.

If anyone can see the article behind the paywall please let us know!

I'm not usually an advocate of not paying for content, etc, but to me personally the Herald deserves it for several reasons.. if you are on a PC/Laptop rather than mobile, then install this chrome extension:

https://github.com/iamadamdev/bypass-paywalls-chrome

I had to install it slightly differently to the setup instructions, so if you get stuck let me know and I'll help you out. Once installed, it works a charm though.

Sorry mods if this is against policy, but seeing as someone copied and pasted the entire article and it wasn't deleted I'm assuming that means getting around the Herald paywall is okay!

The Herald takes content from other sources (e.g. Reddit) and doesn't even link back to the article, so I have no sympathy, especially when their clickbait link for the above article makes it look like if you pay to sign up you will see who we are playing... only to not actually reveal the team. They also misquoted me once (literally made up something I didn't say) and didn't change the article when I corrected them.

Their premium content is a joke anyway (I'd be pissed off if I had paid for it), most of it is far from 'premium' and mostly clickbait shark, or a report of 3rd division high school rugby in some town I've never heard of, rather than high quality journalism.

The game against the African side was confirmed they are just trying to tee up a second so they could announce them together. But yeah a bit late in the piece now. Was hoping they just weren't wanting to take attention away from the Ferns. But if we don't hear anything later today or tomorrow I fear it must have fallen to bits behind the scenes. NZF probably just figure that we have had two games so we'll be happy for another 2 yrs.

As I said before NZF has been piss poor for a long time organising AW games, Covid has been a handy smokescreen.

The cancelled games last year might still not have even happened if Covid was not about, and mostly likely would not have been against England or Belgium as Covid difficulties created the possibility.

Reid,Wood and Smith should all be nearly centurion's and Wood should have claimed the AW goalscoring record years ago.

It's painful being an AW player/fan.

Maybe we should let the NZRFU or NZC organise our games, they are always playing.
