The dream would be for Spark Sport to pick up the A-League as well, then we can have all football on the same service.
But I imagine Sky will be desperate to keep as much summer sport as possible after already losing the cricket.

I reckon Sky will want to hold onto the Nix (a-league) coverage for as long as they are sponsors of the team. Spark don't appear to have shown any interest in bidding for it, maybe when the next contract comes up?

I'm hoping by then that either sky or spark have a combined package agreement. then I can use one app/box to rule them all.
A-League rights are up for grabs right now.

Cricket actually now follows the same pattern as the football, with coverage of major matches split between Spark and Sky
In a strange situation by international standards, Spark Sport now only have the rights to the Black Caps home games but not when they play overseas.
Sky TV now hold the rights to all Black Caps games played overseas and all ICC World Cups:
Sky has "every major ICC tournament including the ICC World Test Championship Final, T20 World Cups for men and women and U19's tournaments.
All Cricket Australia home internationals (Men's and Women's) including the Ashes Series from 8 December and the BLACKCAPS 3x ODI series and one-off T20 from 30 Jan 2022.
All international cricket played in India, South Africa and the West Indies
(Including when the Black Caps play there).
On top of this we have men’s’ and women’s Big Bash Leagues,  and the action-packed Indian Premier League."

Could be that something similar to what is happening in Australia will be the case here too with most A-League games available on the new Paramount Plus streaming service which launches in NZ as well as Australia on August 11.
Cheap too at $A 8.99 / month in Australia.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/paramount-plus-australia-nz-launch-1234949704/
US giant Viacom-CBS owns Aussie free-to-air broadcaster Channel 10 as well as Paramount Plus, so one A-League game per week will screen on Channel 10 in Australia.
Maybe most A-League games will stream on Paramount Plus here in NZ with the Phoenix's matches also screening on Sky TV each week?
After all, it's Viacom-CBS (Channel 10; Paramount Plus) who now own the A-League rights and you'd think they'd put the A-League games on their own service Paramount Plus which is launching simultaneously in NZ as well as Oz.
More info on the new A-League broadcast deal:
https://mumbrella.com.au/network-ten-and-paramount-sign-a-league-broadcast-deal-684482
Could be some good cheap A-League viewing options coming our way:
"To watch all games, viewers will need to sign up to Paramount+, which launches 11 August and will cost $A8.99 a month (with a seven-day free trial period)....
The APL [i.e. the new body of clubs running the A-League] revealed that football fans and members of football clubs will be given a special deal to access all games, but did not elaborate on what such a deal would look like."
Interesting overview of the new fragmented football viewing landscape over in Oz:

Sky extended their partnership with ViacomCBS (who owns Paramount plus) a few months ago in a multi year deal. So the bulk of the content that Paramount would want to stream here is actually on Sky, Neon and Prime and the rights are tied up there for years. Australia is a bit of a different best for Paramount plus as Viacom already owned ten and presumably ten held all the rights to Viacom products in preparation for launch.

You'd assume that Viacom knew that they were launching in NZ when they signed the deal with Sky so they might end up partnering somehow, considering they don't already have a base here like they do in Australia. Sky already bundles sky sport now with some spark packages so they're not against partnerships with competitors.

Thanks. That's interesting. So it seems the situation is quite complicated with Sky already having done a deal over a lot of Viacom-CBS content.
I'm not clear over whether Viacom-CBS's A-League rights aquisition included rights to broadcast in NZ or if the A-League body (APL) are negotiating a separate deal for NZ rights.
With Sky having acquired the rights to a lot of Viacom-CBS content, it would seem that Paramount Plus would be struggling to find popular recent content to broadcast in NZ when they launch next month (other than old movies and TV shows).
Which to me suggests that the A-League would be especially attractive to them, especially as not many other major sports rights are currently up for grabs in NZ (Sky and Spark Sport having snapped up most of them).

Slight correction - Spark own the rights to all cricket played in NZ as you mention but also all cricket played in England run by the ECB, (they've done deals with NZC and ECB), so when the Blackcaps play in England, like they just have v England and run by the ECB, Spark own the rights...otherwise any overseas game they play in is on Sky...

Just dug up the sky tv / ViacomCBS press release:

https://www.sky.co.nz/-/sky-and-viacomcbs-announce-renewed-multi-year-content-deal

I read somewhere, and I can't remember where, that Sky was trying to become an aggregator of a lot of these competing streaming services. With production companies going direct to consumer over the internet the writing is clearly on the wall for Sky's current business model, so providing a platform where you can sign up for a lot of these services, in addition to their own produced programing, and programing which isn't available elsewhere, makes sense. Like, what they've done with bein.

Paramount+ is supposed to go live in both NZ and Australia on Wednesday. Right now it feels like NZ is an afterthought as there is no information about us, plenty of info about Australia. I wouldn't be surprised if a NZ launch is delayed because of the lack of information.

nope, the uncertainty is annoying,
hoping sky keep it, which given sky sponsors the stadium the nix play in you'd think they'd keep the rights. But then Spark sponsor the nix so maybe they have them.

I'm in the other camp sorry fellas. I have both Sky and Spark and find the latter to be superior in terms of quality of content, ability to play on demand, and highlights packages. Can you even watch football on demand on Sky?

More sport that gets snapped up by Spark is fine by me, then maybe I can lose the more expensive and cumbersome Sky for a streamlined and cheaper product. As I already have a mobile with Spark it's only $20 a month!

Sky, with BeinSports, has Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, English Championship, EFL Cup, SPFL, Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana, Asian Champions League, and World Cup/Euro qualifiers for AFC, UEFA and CONMBEBOL, so there’s much more there than Spark.

Everything is streamed on the BeinSports website as opposed to SkyGo because BeIN owns the content, though SkyGo gives complete access to BeinSports NZ website. Spark has the Premier League, which I don’t really follow, so the only feather to their bow, for me, is the UEFA competitions, and for that they only show half the Champions League games, and only the English teams for the other two comps. When BeinSports  had the rights they streamed every game, so Spark are doing less than quarter what BeIN did, so I’d much rather Sky, honestly.

Bein sports is the best options for footy, excluding the EPL which spark probably over paid for. It doesnt bother me too much where the a-league goes, I use both spark and sky for access to different things. I can see at some point they will team up together to provide a single access point for all the things the provide.

Just to answer this specific question - if you are a Sports set top box subscriber for SKY you can use SKY go for free which has live and on demand, you can also access the beIN app (which someone mentioned below) which has extra live and on demand content.
If you are a SSN customer I believe all the content is available on demand similar to the Spark app (at a similar price).

I'm firmly in the Spark camp due to the high streaming quality and on demand service being superior. Though I do prefer the content on BeIN Sport.
I have both Spark and Sky Sport Now but quality of Sky Sport Now is rubbish in comparison to Sky Satellite or Vodafone TV + SKY. If Sky Sport Now gets streaming quality equal to or better then Spark then that might change but I highly doubt it will improve, Sky Go is also better quality than Sky Sport Now.

The fact that Sky in recent months have started showing AFC World Cup qualifiers, including the Socceroos, along with the Matildas friendlies against Brazil, all of which screen on Paramount+ in Australia, may suggest that Sky have done some deal with Viacom CBS Paramount+
So this deal could include the A-League & it could be staying on Sky?

Yeah, as we discussed a few months ago, Sky and Paramount / Viacom have a relationship with Sky owning most of the rights to their programming in NZ.

Because of this, I'm expecting Sky will win the rights to NZ.

Maybe no one wants to pay the cost for filming the Nix home games and with half of the season gone before they can come home maybe the TV networks see no value in it for them at all. Or maybe the APL are sick of only getting $120k a year for the NZ rights and are demanding more which no one wants to pay.
All in all there prob wont be any NZ home games on TV this season.

I can confirm that a new much-enhanced Sky box option is on the way next year (has been held up by the pandemic) with 1 TB recording capacity, ability to use other streaming services you independently subscribe to (perhaps Netflix, Spark Sport, YouTube etc.); ability to cast broadcasts on your box to other devices like laptops, PC's, phones; ability to start watching something on your TV through your Sky box and continue on another device; ability to screen up to five shows simultaneously on five different devices in your household; ability to record up to five other shows simultaneously on top of the one you're watching; ability to curate your own prefered channel guide (leave out all the ones you're not interested in); a "Sport Calendar" capability to alert you of games involving your favourite teams; with a voice-activated remote control capability.
