As someone living and working at the British Covid coal face, yes it's spreading like wildfire but so does the flu in the UK this time of year.  A number of my family and friends have had positive Omicon cases but all jabbed so apart from a mild cough and a positive test nothing wrong.

I really hope NZ does not knee jerk on this one or believes BS from flakey media like many do.
That's reassuring. I got a different story from my friend in London yesterday. Even allowing for hyperbole, it was pretty alarming. Quotes:
- btw everyone here has covid now, it's been insane the last week
- I read the NZ herald but they are not reporting what's going on here, it's a massive wave, not like anything before
- a lot of people we know have it, [his doctor wife] says hospital beds are filling up like crazy
- it's all about boosters here though, 2 jabs means nothing - I know loads of people who have been in bed for weeks who have been double vaxxed
- I've also had a few PCR tests recently at Stansted airport. It's like a scene from an apocalypse movie. Floodlights, containers as far as the eye can see.

Interesting to read that as I work at LHR and have seen none of the above and the other half who is a nurse on covid wards is only seeing the anti jab crew turn up.  Here's hoping this is the end of this bloody pandemic.

Ahh- So Stansted is like La Guardia (which I’ve heard about from TV- no experience of NY and precious little of London) and full of anti-vaxxers flying in on RyanAir or something? Or is it just usually full of containers?

I'd thought he meant makeshift testing centres but on rereading it I really don't know.

I heard 90k cases and talk that it was possibly due to not a sufficient number of boosters a la the earlier outbreak in Israel. Mischievous speculation it might also be that AstraZenneca is weaker against Omicron, where it had been fine against Delta.

Also heard footballers have been failing horribly to get vaccinated. Professional players rates reported way down on the general public.

But yeh read this in the media so, it’s probably all suspect, those journalists…!

More importantly what’s the fall out for our season? Our guys all vaxxed? Reckon we’re a dark horse to win the league, especially if we get a few games after we get a couple of players in.

Steal a couple more results, win the league!

So yeh any news?

Like your optimism but not sure there will be any new signings apart from the Mexican.

My understanding is the whole Nix squad are vaccinated. But two doses doesn't seem to be stopping the spread of Omicron. Wonder if sports teams in Aus, including A League sides are on a priority list for booster jabs? If they are not and players won't get a 3rd jab until well into January, expect more cases with the clubs, and more games postponed.

And there are 90,000 plus new daily cases a day in the UK now. But more importantly from a NZ angle is increasing cases in all the Aus states bar WA which has basically closed its borders again. They are saying daily cases will likely peak late January. Other states outside WA, seem to be ruling out closing borders again. Though that could always change as they closely monitor hospitalisations, ICU beds & deaths - rather than just cases.

My 75 yr old mum in QLD gets her booster Jan 1st, she’s basically going into hermit mode until then, and a bit after.

I'd assume all players are vaccinated across the league now, some states don't allow unvaccinated travel interstate.

Wasn't it Macarthur who had a number of unvaccinated players?
They haven't played a game out of NSW yet, and won't until January.

Two doses is still effective I believe but not at such high levels. The other issue there is is possible waning coverage without boosters in the UK?
In any case just got a regular cold which I haven’t done in ages!

Friend of mine in the US's son just caught covid for the third time despite being double vaccinated, he is blaming it on the fact that he didn't get his booster.

Vaccination is effective but not fullproof. Getting the virus (which is what a lot of people mandate) is also not fullproof.

Ultimately, this is our reality for the foreseable future and getting vaccinated regularly will be the new normal, it's not really that big a deal and we just have to deal with it.

That was their rumor, they announced that they wouldn't be enforcing vaccines anyway. Looking at their schedule they're not playing outside of NSW until mid Jan. Would be interesting as to why that happened and if the league is making concessions to them for their vaccine status.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/127332015/wellington-phoenix-coach-ufuk-talay-preparing-for-extended-stay-in-australia

This is the first time the Phoenix have reached the FFA Cup quarterfinals and Talay hoped his players would rise to the occasion after making a “timid” start in their 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC in the A-League Men on Sunday.

Talay has put his senior players on notice after criticising the way the team started the game against Sydney and praising the way they finished, once he had brought a number of younger players on.

I’m wondering with all these FFA Cup postponements and numerous A League teams reporting COVID cases if will we see the postponement of the League for a couple weeks?

Hopefully not but I guess any silver lining would be we might have Hooper and Sandoval back for the games. Also (wishful thinking) might give more chance of home games if the league is pushed out a few weeks.

Situations looking pretty shark tbh.

Good to see that Sky are offering commentary options for Phoenix men's and women's games now via your Sky remote control.
I tried it for the first time during the last Phoenix Women's match.
You press the yellow button on your remote and use your "up" and "down" arrow buttons to select a commentary ("ENGLISH" is the Kiwi Sky commentary and either of the other language options is the Aussie Paramount Plus commentary)
Even if you prefer the Kiwi commentary, by using this feature you can get the sideline commentator comments and interviews which are cut from Sky's Kiwi broadcast (e.g. the sideline interview with Tom Sermanni during the first Phoenix Women's match which had no audio during the Sky broadcast, only the visual).

I wouldn't think so unfortunately.
You could ask Sky through the contact form on the Sky website.

https://theniche-cache.com/football/the-welly-nix-blokes-are-now-officially-in-searching-for-solutions-mode

Piscopo’s chock full of footballing quality and there’s still plenty of time for him to step up and have the increased impact that was hoped for. But it won’t happen playing the way he has been.

Ben Old, get this, has played only 56% of the Nix’s total minutes this term yet he’s by far their most fouled player - on the end of 17 free kicks. Only Beka Mikeltadze (Newcastle) has been fouled more often (18 occasions) across the entire league.

Still a while away from our next game but thought it'd be interesting to compare what would be our strongest 11 going into the next game vs our last 11.
The depth now on our bench looks strong too if the visa signings do well I think this team can finish top 6

Having a Sutton and Sotton would be too confusing. I assume you meant Wootton there?

So, the Aussies schedule us to play at 1 pm local time against Western on Saturday in the heat of the day in Melbourne.
32 degrees and humid forecast.
Apparently such kick-off times are required because the broadcaster has so many camera crew, commentators etc. with Covid they are struggling to find staff.
Hence the Phoenix women's game on Sunday was changed to 2 pm local time.

The game will not be at 1pm on Saturday, that's a placeholder time/date for a TBC round. Sounds like it will be Friday night in Wollongong.

Thanks. Good to know.
They should just say "TBC" in the fixture list on the Phoenix website rather than a specific time then to avoid such confusion.
Scheduling of this game seems very last minute though.

Rollo was saying that 17 members of the club ended up getting Covid and today is the first time all have been back, so guessing that probably played a part. Agree though, all a bit confusing.

Without being horrible, and hopefully all the squad members affected aren't suffering any of the longer term effects of the virus, but this break between the squad outbreak and having several games postponed has worked more in our favour. Transfer window now opened and reinforcements in Sandoval and Wootton able to now be selected.

It's a roundabout way of looking at it, and it's made the past couple of weeks a bit drab with no Nix games to look forward to, but hopefully onwards and upwards from here on in. Hopefully back in the winners circle against the snakes this weekend too. COYN.

Seen this on Gael's instagram, terrible news being so far away from friends and family, possibly unavailable for the weekend now?

Looks like his father or grandfather has passed away back in Mexico recently. Much love to you and the family at this difficult time Gael 💛🖤

Nobody is prepared for death, it comes when we least expect it and in inopportune moments the pain is unusual and devastating, but without a doubt, loving is the only important memory that makes us enjoy the moment and the memory. See you always my dear old man. I will miss you a lot I love you

I think Phoenix is his first club abroad too? So awful timing for someone he loves (possibly his father, based on the translation) to pass away just after he leaves. Covid (both going into Mexico and coming back to Australia) obviously complicates travelling, but hopefully he can get back for the funeral in time (if that's something he wants to do) even if it means missing a couple of matches.

Understand all the Nix squad are vaccinated, but that isn’t always stopping folks from at least catching Omicron.

They wouldn’t have got their booster jabs yet without some sort of age exemptions. My 75 yr old mum in QLD has only just got hers.

Even if you get a booster you can still get it. My understanding (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't want to spread untrue facts) is that the main advantage of the booster (as with the initial vaccines) is that it helps with the severity if you do catch it, and with Omicron particularly doesn't drastically reduce the actual infection spreading rates.

Pretty much, though it *does* still reduce the infection rate, just not as much as with the original strains.

The biggest worry for us and the players is that in all likelihood there will be a handful of players who have been hit very hard by COVID and won't be back to their best for a long time.

Correct, my folks have it in the UK and fortunately seem to be suffering cold symptoms. One of my mates though had it in Nov, still had no sense of smell or taste, and has significantly reduced lung capacity. Think that was around the time boosters came out so he may have just been unfortunate with the timing.

I've heard it said that Omicron doesn't make you lose your sense of smell semi-permanently the way Delta does

Pour yourself a Cold Beer. Sniff it and then drink it. If it smells like Beer and tastes like Beer, you don't have Covid. I did this self test 12 times last night and I found the only Covid sympton was a head ache this morning. ;)

If your mate had Covid in the UK in November he most likely yes had the more nasty Delta strain, rather than Omicron.

FYI - a friend of mine who got Covid in Bogota, Colombia in late 2020, has had a complete loss of hearing in one ear, ever since. Nasty fudgeen virus, not underplaying the nearly 6M who have sadly died worldwide

There's no match tomorrow night. Western United Friday, then TBC after that, but sounds like it will likely be the FFA Cup semifinal next weekend in place of what was originally scheduled (MVC at a TBC home venue), though that could change.
