Sorry if this has already been posted but definitely worth a listen if you are just doing your chores around the house or what have you. A real treat to have this in depth and well informed discussion of where things stand for the All whites heading into next year. Some great and exciting measured analysis.

Good listen. As they say RB spot still wide open.

Stephen Hoyle says strong whispers, that Alex Greive has impressed St Mirren already. So much that rather than loan him out in January, they are going to keep him around the 1st team squad. St Mirren currently 9th in the SPL.

Forgive me but I've been a bit out of touch with the domestic scene since the shake up and the handa premiership got dissolved. Who is Alex Grieve? Is he one to watch for the future,  is he getting game time over at St Mirren? Would love an excuse to start tuning in for the SPL

Greive played in the Handy Prem for Waitak, after returning from a US College. 6 goals in 14 games.

He's only just arrived in Scotland. While to go I'd imagine before any talk of a SPL debut. He's gone there partly because his Northern League club Birkenhead (along with Nelson Suburbs) have a new relationship with St Mirren.

See that OFC have confirmed AWs playing order for OFC Tourney.
PNG, Fiji & then New Caledonia.
https://www.oceaniafootball.com/match-schedule-set-for-fifa-world-cup-qatar-2022-ofc-preliminary-competition/

Same order that was listed on Soccerway 3 weeks ago!
https://us.soccerway.com/teams/new-zealand/new-zealand/1564/

Good news as NC on paper look like toughest pool opponents and from 24th March NC pool game onwards (inside March FIFA window) AWs should be close to full strength. March FIFA window starts 21st March to 1st Feb.

Tight schedule with 5 games in 12 days if AWs make the final. Hopefully FIFA allow large 30-31 man squads.

Not sure why OFC only posted them now, FIFA had the dates listed for at least a couple weeks, so Soccerway probably saw that from the start.

Having a look at fixtures for players’ and travel times to Qatar, should have a decent enough squad for the first two games as things are. I tried guessing how squads would look for each game, though it relies on Phoenix vs Jets on the 18th being postponed. I assumed pros wouldn’t be released pre-window if they had games, and factored in travel time from respective clubs.

PNG (with Phoenix):
GK: Sail, Searle
DEF: Elliot, F De Vries, McGarry, Stanger, Payne, Pijnaker, Reid
MID: Bell, Garbett, Lewis, Old, Rufer
FW: Stevens, Grieve, L Rogerson, Waine

Fiji:
GK: Marinovic, Sail, Searle
DEF: Elliot, F De Vries, McGarry, Stanger, Payne, Pijnaker, Reid, Smith
MID: Bell, Garbett, Lewis, Old, Rufer
FW: Stevens, De Jong, Grieve, L Rogerson, Waine

New Caledonia:
GK: Marinovic, Searle, Woud
DEF: Cacace, F De Vries, Kirwan, M Boxall, Pijnaker, Reid, Smith, Tuiloma;
MID: Bell, Garbett, Singh, Stamenic, Thomas;
FW: Barbarouses, Champness, De Jong, Just, McCowatt, Rojas, Wood;

Haven’t seen any friendlies organised for PNG or New Caledonia, though they did name large preliminary squads, 30 and 50 players respectively. Fiji haven’t named any prelim squad, though they have a camp on the 17th of this month, and have also organised a camp in Melbourne, where they’ll play City, Western and Victory, after their games against Malaysia were cancelled.

Krishna’s availability is still TBC, as the Indian Super League final will probably be around the 21st, so his availability vs NZ will be dependent on whether they qualify for that or not. Similarly, David Browne is TBC, as there is a Finnish League Cup final on that date that HJK could well qualify for, though the league starts after the window, and the League Cup allows trial players so might not be considered serious enough to block him from leaving early to national team duty.

On current form I wouldn't think too many Nix players would make the cut. will USL players be available there season set to start mid march.? Musa, Billingsley, Elliot, Adams, N Boxall etc.
Kalua probably in there somewhere to. Hay seems to like him.

Some interesting names in there Carlind.

I'd wager though that if Nix agree to release players for those first 2 pool games, Hay will be doing his damndest to similarly get Poppa & Corica to release Rojas & Barba as well. They have hardly played for the AWs since 2017, and I think their A League coaches will understand World Cups don't come around often in a player's career.

Hay will want more than likes of raw Greive & Stevens. Doubt Collier's USL club won't agree to him being released either, if required. Stamenic likewise if he's back at Copenhagen playing youth football.

The MLS guys may also get an early release with luck, having just started their seasons.

Interesting that Fiji have organised some warmups against A League teams. Might end up being more A League youth sides given likely heavy catch up schedule into Feb-March with so many games now postponed.

Some value perhaps in bringing Greive into AWs squad for Jordan & Uzbekistan games, I'll admit. I presume it will again have to be a solely NH based AWs. They are friendlies after all, so why not experiment. Especially if Wood is now battling a groin niggle at Burnley. Need to keep Dyche onside and not unnecessarily overload the Woodsman who's likely to have a heavy schedule now through Jan-Feb.

But OFC Tourney games are not friendlies. Yes even a AWs B team should be too strong for Fiji & PNG. But I think you want to play experienced guys like Barba, Collier etc if you can, rather than raw guys like Greive & Waine when World Cup qualification is in reality on the line.

Edit - Tommy Smith is another who may skip January friendlies (League Two play through FIFA windows) to concentrate on helping Colchester avoid the drop. Then as a favour Colchester may release him for PNG & Fiji games outside March FIFA window, as some sort of deal.

Reid, Pjinaker, M Boxall & Tuiloma look like all being available Jan window. Though Reid could be close to having a new club.

Really get the feeling some of these Island teams are going to be ill prepared for March, compared to the AWs, who have basically had regular international games since Tokyo.

Can't see that PNG for example have organised any warmup (non inter squad) matches yet.

Less than two weeks to go until the friendlies in UAE. Surely we must be due squad announcement soon? Uffie hinted on kiwi football fix that a couple of his boys might be heading out for the window but in all honesty with the exception of Tim Payne just for the lack of depth we have in the RB position I don't think anyone in the Nix camp has really performed well enough to merit an All Whites selection. The squad they had for the October and November windows did more than a serviceable job I'd just leave the A League boys where they are for now especially wiith Rojas and Kosta injured. If it ain't broke don't fix.

Yes but Hay is going to need some ALM guys for the first 2 pool games in March. So maybe keen to bring some of those guys in now for a look, ‘resting’ some his regulars. Wood is now one guy who you think may not be called up for these 2 friendlies.

I’m sure Hay’s been weighing up his options carefully, plus talking to various players and coaches about what to do with the Jan window plus first 2 pool games in March. Backlog of ALM games now a complicating factor.

Squad naming for Jordan (Jan 27th)& Uzbekistan (Jan 31st) friendlies, can't be far away?

As with other recent windows, no A League players to be called up?

Uzbeks have had to call off their other friendly scheduled for Jan window, in Japan.

And looks like Jordanians have named their squad for anyone who can translate Arabic!

Ufuk Talay said somewhere that two Phoenix players are set to go to the games, so A League players must be a green light. Strange there has been almost radio silence about the games from NZF/media compared to November’s games; this far out last time we had the squad named and everything.

Jordan have named their squad and are already in camp in Jordan, except for the two European based players (at OHL in Belgium and Qabala in Azerbaijan). 18 of their 25 man squad played at the Arab Cup, with vast majority playing in Jordan, Qatar or Bahrain, though a couple play in Malaysia and one in Thailand.

Uzbekistan are also already in camp in Dubai ahead of the game, though are still awaiting the arrival of a couple European based players.

Some of the football journos may have been having an earned festive break like most folks!  Plus with such an unaccustomed flood of recent AWs games, maybe the football public/media have got a touch apathetic!! Like most international football fans about friendlies.

But thanks for some background info Carlind, on Uzbeks & Jordan. As neither have many European based players like a Curacao or even Gambia - profile, familiarity & interest level perhaps a little bit lower than Oct-Nov games?

Though plenty of intrigue in how AWs go, and who Hay picks.

Edit - 2 guys from the Nix. Payne & Mcgarry? Or Lewis if Bell and/or Stamenic by chance are unavailable? Or Elliott as that RB slot is still wide open, and in Fenton Talay has a capable alternative.
Also I note Niko Kirwan's promotion chasing Padova play through the Jan window (2-3 Serie C games), so he'll be under some pressure to skip the AWs this time.

Hopefully Ryan Thomas is now fit enough to have some involvement in the UAE.

I’m guessing Payne is being viewed as a RB option for Hay as you’d think we’re pretty set at CB (although Payne’s versatility is helpful too). Happy about that.

Makes sense Lewis getting the call too as we are a bit short in CM assuming Thomas is out (in quantity def not quality)!

Be interesting to see the full squad announcement can’t be too far away now. I wonder if any other A League players get called up. Maybe Ingham/Roux as another RB option and think Kosta and Marco are out injured?

Thought there may have been more players unavailable, so good to see most of the squad there from the previous windows, to hopefully continue promising AWs form from 2021. The high expectation will be 2 more wins!

Bit surprising Torino didn't release Garbett though, when he's only playing U19 football.

And interesting that Rojas not mentioned as an ALM player Hay firmly on Hay's radar.

Lots of CBs named. Wonder if Tuiloma will get a run at RB? Been rumoured that Hay is keen to try him there.

Clubs for Cacace & Kirwan playing through the FIFA window, so their employers obviously not so keen they head off on AWs duty, for some friendlies. Sounds a bit the same with Garbett. Hay could play hardball, but has an eye towards March OFC tourney and keeping warm relations with the clubs.

Wilkins & De Vries can duel for the backup LB spot (if Hay doesn't call up either Mcgarry or Sutton in March).

And Kirwan likely isn't the long term solution at RB, so Hay can give Kalua another shot, and/or try Payne and/or Tuiloma there.

Collier presumably dropped, for Rogerson.

Squad actually turned out a lot better than I thought. I was sure Woodsy would be toast with the Newcastle move. Happy to have Sapreet back in as well. Should be no qualms without Libby if it curries favour for OFC qualifiers time then fair game. Real good chance to see what the other boys can do in his shadow. Hoping for a big tour from De Vries!

Shame about the 4am kick off times. 5am was perfect to get the whole game in before work and not feel too shattered. 4am makes it a bit dicey. Will have to hope the kids get to bed early those nights before and I can do the same myself.

Also how good will the 29th be. All Whites kicking off their year with a win in the morning. And then Phoenix booking their place in the FFA Cup finals in the evening. The perfect day bookended by NZ Football

“We take every single player's position in their club into account and there will be times when there's gotta be a little bit of payback, so I'm expecting come March, I can make a phone call with one or two coaches and say, can you remember when we didn't call them up in January to help you out? Now it's time for a little bit of payback.”

Andre de Jong was somewhat of a surprise inclusion, as he is based in South Africa, and most travel from that country to the UAE is prohibited at present.

Hay said the forward’s involvement was still up in the air and the staff were “holding their breath” as they waited to see whether they could get him in.

Ryan Thomas remains a long-term absentee. The midfielder made himself unavailable for selection last year while focusing on his club career at PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, which suffered another injury setback prior to Christmas.

https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/newsarticle/111292?newsfeedId=1223399
Head Coach Danny Hay is looking forward to getting the side back together as they build towards the OFC FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying tournament in March:

“It was important to play games in this window so we can build on what we did at the end of last year and continue to develop as a team.

“Knowing some of the difficulties the OFC FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament presents it was important for us to bring in some new faces. It’s great that we can now select from the A-League Men, as well as give opportunities to players in Europe who have had good seasons and just missed out in the spring.

“Both Jordan and Uzbekistan are going to be challenging but this is what we need to develop, especially when you consider the number of young players we have in the squad. We need to continue to test ourselves in games like this on a regular basis as we start what could be a big year for the team.”

Damn what a legend Chris Wood is. Absolute unwavering commitment to the cause.

I wonder if he emphasised his desire to play for NZ as part of his Newcastle contract negotiations - would line up with them using NZ so heavily in promoting his signing.

Garnett is a very strange one. Is he closer to the first team squad and possibly even game time then it appears?

Otherwise I don’t really get the clubs stance

This is indeed why – and he's probably one where it could well end up being a case of stay in January, come early in March (I think there's less chance of Cacace, for example, being done any favours in March).

Alf Garnett?  West Ham through & through that guy.

But if you mean Garbett, then do remember that when he signed in Italy, Torino said all going well, they planned he would move up from the U19s to be in & around the first team squad sometime early 2022. So maybe that is actually happening??

Hard to know who our full backs will be, especially on the left with Cacace not there (and no Kirwan/Elliot/Fenton on the right). Also not sure if Payne is a likely CD or right full back under Hay.

I reckon for sure Hay is going to try him at RB in these friendlies. Why would he bother picking Niko Boxall if Payne was solely seen as a CB.

And Payne will know RB is likely his best shot at cracking a full strength AWs 23 man squad, even starting 11.

Lot of quality CB competition but RB is wide open.

I took that as meaning someone new moving to Ireland, though Spooners would know De Vries very well from playing together for years so maybe it’s meant that way. The League of Ireland probably isn’t that bad a place to go for moving to Europe from NZ though, given it’s a weaker league in a country with a common language, so I’m surprised so few go there.

You’ll probably right, though not sure if it’s even worth Spoonley alluding to someone signing in the Irish Prem League, in the context of a general AWs chat.

To be fair with the Ryan Thomas situation, he hasn’t played for PSV since before the Curaçao game, his last game being October 4th when he scored the second in the 2-1 win vs Sparta Rotterdam. So he hasn’t really ‘skipped’ playing for the national team, because he’s been injured, and still currently recovering from knee surgery that is supposed to fix his recurring issues.

If come March he’s making himself unavailable for World Cup qualifiers, then maybe there’s a bigger issue similar to Boyd in 2016 and Smith in 2013(?). If he doesn’t play in March, then should he slide straight in if they make the June playoff, and if he skipped a successful June playoff, would he be let back into a World Cup squad

Sounds like Thomas had a further injury setback around Xmas, and won’t be back training at PSV until early Feb.

He’s had a wretched time of late with injuries. Coupled with his club career rumoured being on the line at PSV, understandable, if disappointing hasn’t been with Olywhites/AWs of late.
