Does that mean you never appreciated the good work he did for us in the past? Ya know, prior Clive Palmer involvement? 🤔

Ha ha ha ha, I've been cancelled so many times on this forum alone and it doesn't slow me down much.

Seriously, no-one is really against "cancel culture" - they only differ over who should be cancelled.

The comment about quarantine only being 14 days because of some UN resolution around torture and not because that's a reasonable amount of time for the virus to gestate, is a conspiracy theory. Also, disproved because afterwards he had to quarantine for 28 days. But times are tough and people are bored, he's not continued down that train of thought and people are allowed to be wrong.

For me I don't care, it's just good we've got two keepers that we're confident in and can push each other. I was always terrified when Italiano was in goal in the past.

I read the Tweet, as he thought the 14 day MIQ system was unnecessary (rather NZ should go with an open system like Sweden were doing at the time). Then he's trying to say a 14 day MIQ system would virtually be in breach of some UN charter, where 15 days solitary confinement is considered torture.

Really misguided comments especially with hindsight, but no statement about any conspiracy theory.

Someone touched on it earlier that his partner is a pharmacist or doctor of something of that ilk, so being a professional footballer in a league that in normal times would otherwise involve back and forth travel across the Tasman, I'd assume he's be getting some shots of a different kind before it becomes mandated that he has to. Not that there was any indication he was/is a serial anti-vaxxer or anything like that anyway.

Anywhoo, back to it, Sail for 3 clean sheets in a row anyone? Since it feels like it's been a while since we accomplished that feat...

Sure a pharmacist maybe an anti vaxxer, but it would be highly unusual. And of course we may not all agree with the views of our life partners re Covid, or any other big issue.

But is nothing in comments copied into this thread attributed to Marinovic that say conspiracy theorist, or anti vaxxer. Some dodgy views on how to control the virus though for sure.

Actually upon entering bathroom of Buenos Aires Airport 2017 (layover enroute to Peru), I accidentally stood on one of Marinovic's sizeable feet as he was drying his hands. In my defence I was pretty tired from exiting cattle class after the 14 hour Auckland flight. He accepted my mumbled apology, and I can report he had washed his large mitts.

Same Akld-BA flight where Brocks/Rory made some of the younger AWs (Dane Ingham for sure?) sing a song to all in economy class. And a sheepish Monty Patterson had to go back into the plane, after leaving maybe his passport back in the big jet.

But yeah I plump for Sail's current exuberant, uplifting nature.

I think he should be dropped because he can't spell "livelihood".
Also people who use "infer" when they should be using "imply".
And people who can't spell "definitely"!
This is the thread where we all have a whinge eh?

It’s a surprising rumour given that Oli Sail has very little A League experience, and, despite being solid these last few games hasn’t showed this over a long run, so for Rudan to use a visa spot on him would be surprising, especially given that when Rudan was here he opted against making him number 1 to sign Kurto.
Also would be surprised to see Talay let that happen as it looks like going forward Sail would be number one, and that Marinovic will probably head back to Germany where his partner lives. I’m obviously not privy to any decision making but would seem weird for either party to do that.

Is Kurto on the move? If not I don't see why Sail would go to be backup keeper somewhere else...Surely if he locks down the #1 spot he stays with us.

Wish Rudan and his snake army would just piss off too.

Quote didn't work...

but having NZs best two keepers form-wise on our books has always been an issue.  The Kingz, Knights and Nix always had NZ's best keepers along with class like Kurto, Theo, Reddy, Vukovic, etc:  Utting (another nutter!), Nicholson, Eddy, Moss, Paston, Bannatyne,  Sail, Marinovic etc.

Thinking about it, NZ pro teams have made careers for a number of class keepers across the ditch.

Pre-season starts on Mon 26 July; what do you expect training to be like over the next few weeks?
Yeah obviously it’s frustrating to have things delayed by Covid and not going to plan right from the get-go, but that’s the world we’re living in at the moment and you’ve just got to roll with the punches.

I imagine that the first few weeks will be quite heavily conditioning load - because obviously there’s minimal tactical preparation you can do with a squad of six or so together at the moment.

Which is good and bad; on one hand we’ll have a running start on the other boys and on the season, it might not be my favourite thing to go out in that Wellington wind and rain but it’ll be good fun! And those kind of things always brings the players together, because we’re all in the same position, having to work hard and we’re all grinding it out together. It helps build that team chemistry early on.

For me the elbow’s coming along really well, I’ve been rehabbing it really hard almost every day and strengthening bits and pieces up and it’s responded well. To be honest, as much as the delays [due to Covid] have been frustrating, it’s probably been ideal for me as well – as I’m all cleared to train in a controlled environment but ideally I’d need a few more weeks before playing in a game [where you don’t have any control over what you’re going to be doing]. So the delays have worked in my favour in that regard.

And being back in Wellington is exciting too, not just for training but for the lifestyle too. I love the beach, I’m a real water boy – in Wellington I’d swim in the sea most days, every day in the summer and I’d even brave it sometimes in the winter too. And I love the dining/café culture of Wellington, I love going for coffees at all the different, quirky little spots in Wellington, getting out and trying different cuisines and stuff like that.

What’s the mindset for next season?
If we can carry forward the momentum from that unbeaten run forward, I reckon we’ll be a force. I remember speaking to several players from around the A-League that were in the playoffs, boys from Macarthur, Melbourne City and Sydney – and they were all genuinely worried that we were going to make the playoffs, they really were! It’s easy to say and sometimes that kinda thing gets thrown out there like “oh you wouldn’t want to come up against us in the playoffs!” but I think this was a genuine thing.

So if we can continue to build off on that then no-one is going to want to play us next season. Wellington is always a tough place for opponents to play in anyway so hopefully we can turn that into a bit of a fortress, but even playing away from home last season our away record was pretty good – so he can look at build on that collectively as a team.

For me, there’s no excuses for not making playoffs football next season. Last year was extremely difficult and we all know the sacrifices that players and staff and everyone at the Club made, but for me this season needs to end in Finals football.

We’ve got enough quality, and retaining Uffy [Coach Ufuk Talay] for another two years is massive so I think we’ve gotta be right up there at the top by end of season. And being back at home next season with the great support shown from Wellingtonians.

Another thing that’s really exciting for me  is getting Hoops back in the squad – it’s massive. We all know the quality and the experience that he brings from playing at the top level. I’ve been in touch with him while he’s in quarantine up in Auckland, saying if he needs anything to give me a shout.

Getting Hoops back is very pleasing from my end; I didn’t get to play on the field with him in his last stint with us, so I’m really looking forward to playing with him. He’s the kind of striker you love on your team as a goalkeeper, he’s an outlet for that longer ball, his hold-up play is brilliant and his defending of set pieces as well – he really throws himself about!

He’s the kind of striker you love to have on your side because he’ll do the job at both ends, and he’s a good outlet for myself personally as well.

According to the paywalled NZH article, he's attracted interest from Europe. If it comes to fruition, it's nothing less than what he deserves to be fair.

Was unsure if he had a contract beyond this season. Have just checked - he does! So a little bit of money possibly back for the Phoenix coffees too. Win/Win.

If anyone could post the actual article that would be great too. 👌

Article says nothing really, it’s the same quotes Sail gave to the media that are in Stuff, and all it says about the interest is “the Herald understands at least two European clubs are interested”, nothing more specific than that

Yeah, in hindsight I should've read the Stuff article first 😅

Will be interesting to see how this unfolds though. His form has been outstanding this season, so only natural that he's piqued the interest of a few clubs.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/128664695/oli-to-set-sail-phoenix-standout-on-finals-exit-world-cup-playoff-and-his-future

Sail is understood to have attracted some interest from a club in Europe on the back of his stellar season, where he was thrust into a captaincy role when Alex Rufer suffered a long-term injury.

Although he is contracted through to the end of next season, there is a chance he may have played his final game for the Phoenix.

Sail was reluctant to confirm the interest but he made no secret of his desire to test himself at a higher level should an opportunity arise in the coming months.

“I’m just going to focus on the next couple of months and in particular the next four or five weeks and those things will take care of themselves, hopefully.

“What motivates me is wanting to challenge myself and a greater level. This year it took shape in the form of wanting to be a leader in this group and that was a new challenge.

“I’d love to make a step-up and play at a higher level and challenge myself again and see if I can adapt and perform at that level and go again.

“Every time you accomplish something you set your mind on the next task and playing at higher honours is something I have set my sights on.”

If Sail was to return to the Phoenix next season he would be working under a new goalkeeping coach with his long-time mentor Paul Gothard moving on to pursue a new opportunity.

Sail has worked with Gothard since he was 14 and said he has had a massive influence on his career.

“It’s going to leave a big hole at the football club.”

I guess we wait and see, if he plays in the warm up games and takes the #1 jersey against Costa Rica he'll gain more interest. With a year to to to run on his contract we could at least get a decent fee for him.
