Newcastle also had "nothing to play for" and absolutely battered us. We've collapsed and our heads are gone. I don't feel it makes much difference who our opposition are at this point.

Anything can happen tomorrow boys.

Bellerin looks like he can’t stay at Betis based on ££‘s. If he returned and we got rid of Cedric he might give us one good last season before letting him go for free.

That said I do like the look of Spence from Boro as an up and coming back up to Tomiyasu.

The fact that we have to rely on Cedric so much does make me question why we let chambers and AMN go. Could have kept one, probably AMN as he can cover Cm as well. Oh well sliding doors moment I suppose.

5-1, totally dominant over a terrible Everton side. Demonstrates what could have been but we have to be happy with 5th.
if we can manage to keep the the core of the squad together over the summer we have the building blocks of a team that can with Europa league and get into CL.
Saka, ESR, Oodegaard, Martinelli, Partey, Xhaka, Gabriel, White, Tomi, Tierney Ramsdale. Add to that list a striker that will score 15+ goals a couple of CM's to press for starting spots and replacements for Cedric and Tavares then I'm confident we have a team that can push for trophies next season.

Im happy to keep Cedric.
I know he's not quite at the quality we want, but he is very dedicated, seems a good squad member, and can play both sides which is handy. I feel he's been pretty important to us with Tierney and Tomiyasu out, and is a safe pair of hands compared to a youngster.
Having said that, if Bellerin is out of options and humble enough to slip back into the squad and do his best for a season, then I'd be happy with that too.

So 8 points and 3 positions is the end improvement on last year.
All things considered, that's satisfactory progress, particularly since we have revolutionised the squad in that same period of time.
Standards will be raised again for next season. Nothing but Champions League will do.

Not much you can say about that game really. Ultimately the difference between Spurs and us was they have 2 prolific goal scorers and we have none. Bitterly disappointing that it still slipped when it was in our hands but at least Liverpool didn't win the league.

Hilarious that Gerrard let the title slip from Liverpool again though. I guess he  must have told Villa it "does not fudgeing slip now" at 2-0.

Better team finished 4th. Take 5th and make some quality signings to strengthen both the starting 11 and overall squad depth and go again next season with an eye on top 4 once again and a good European run.

The worry is that now Spurs have CL and Conte as their manager, they keep Kane and Son as well as being able to better attract the players that we might want. Add to that Man United having a new quality manager and Newcastle going into their first summer with an unlimited budget and the chance we had this season might not come again.

While those around us are getting stronger, we are too. But I don’t think any of the mob around us will get near Liverpool or city. I think next year we could be competing with Chelsea, west ham, Newcastle, spurs and manu for the 3rd to 6th spots.

Does seem that way ajc but the beauty is that at least a few of the teams mentioned will underperform, it always happens.
The chance will be there for us.
What we really want is a better pre-season, and to be in a much calmer and ready state come game 1. Hard to believe that Balogun, Pepe, Lokonga, Mari, Chambers and Leno all started game one. ESR played no.10, no Odegaard or Saka, we're in very different place now.

West Ham might have peaked. Two great seasons but a full on European campaign with a thin squad would have taken its toll. Back in Europe again next year they might not be able to repeat.

Very interested in what the Saudis do in the summer.

I'm sure Newcastle will sign a few players but if you want a project, surely you go to United/Spurs/Arse. If you want trophies, you go to City/Liverpool.

How much more money would it take for you to pass up one of those clubs and live in fudgeing Newcastle?

Man City did it as a club with no pedigree in the Premier League, who hadn't even won a trophy for about 40 years and in the same city as a major "glamour" club who would have wanted the same players. Didn't Robinho say he thought he was going to Man United and didn't even know there was another Manchester club until he turned up there?  Money talks but you're right they might not attract the major superstars immediately.

It did take City a few seasons to start winning trophies. Even Chelsea didn't win everything immediately and unlike City and Newcastle they were already a CL team when Abramovich came (our unbeaten season was his first season from memory). So similarly it might take a few seasons of moving up the table and into Europe etc first but have no doubt they'll be going for anyone of any note this summer.

Money only goes so far. Ready made stars who can absolutely flop (Sancho/Pepe anyone?). Tomiyasu didn't cost the earth and looks one of the better RB's in the league. Let Newcastle/City/PSG spend their ££'s on the known quantities. I'm content investing in the youth/moneyball approach.

Paperchat today that Sp*rs will offer Conte 6 signings to stay. Pathetic. I’d rather we had a project like ours to believe in than a mercenary like Conte who needs appeasement.

Elneny has signed an extension of his contract. Good deal on all sides i think. Showed his worth and limitations in the final run in. Also apparently a great person to have around the clubs. Good news.

Also hearing we've signed/signing some brazilian 17yr old winger called Marquhios(sp?) and a LB from Bolongia. Should be interesting to see if these come to anything.

That the Scottish lad Aaron Hicks? Ornstein had it as an option but not solid recently - must have moved quick.

Elneny 1+1 deal is perfect for us.

Looks like Eddie will be staying. Pretty surprised by this as I was sure he was off to palace. While I don’t think he’s good enough to lead the line yet, he is a good squaddie to have and push our starters.

Agreed. I think I said after I saw him earlier in the season live we would be nuts to lose him and extend Laca. Looks like it's going to go that way which is great for the club.

Mid season I was so keen on Laca staying, but like Auba he faded, his lack of goal scoring was made up by for by the effort he put in and involvement in goals, but his off-field antics showed he wasnt really keen on staying. Pleased to see Nketiah is likely to stay, he's is growing into a decent line leader, we will need a scorer though that will get us into the top four battle.

Nketiah staying would be great news as means we can go all out on a number 1 striker instead of having to buy two. Plenty of games to go around with Europa next season too. Not sure I'm convinced he's a 20-25 goal a season striker but should certainly hit double figures with a decent amount of playing time. Forgetting everything else, perhaps we'd have made 4th if Arteta had brought him in a few games earlier.

I still think we need two strikers if we re-sign Nketiah and go out and get someone like Jesus, we need a big man alternative in the side. Doesn’t have to be ab established player, a young up and comer can do it, just need the ability to offer something different

I'm so not up to the play on rumours and transfers these days, often finding out things for the first time in here now!
Is Nketiah re-signing? That would be excellent - provided we are buying a striker to replace Lacazette as well. I am also keen to see Martinelli given a go leading the line in some matches next season. I wonder if that's where he eventually ends up full time one day, and we have Smith-Rowe going great guns and deserving starts on the left as well.
I saw some rumours this morning of Gnabry potentially wanting to come back, no idea of how accurate.
What else are people seeing out there?
Elneny is a good squad player, happy to have re-signed him. We still need to sign a top class midfielder as well though, I want one more for next season, and retain the current four as well - the extra Europa League games mean we should be able to carry that.
Odd rumours of Gabriel potentially going, that better not happen, he is critical to us. He's so good I can see why the big european clubs are sniffing round though. Surely we must have him tied down for a couple of seasons yet? Maybe we should be making him a new offer already.

Yeah always good to see some different teams come up too rather than the same old teams who yo-yo between the top 2 divisions every season. Was an enjoyable game this morning as we the CL final yesterday. Other than the big finals I barely watch any non-Arsenal club games as find I just can't be bothered, and often don't have the time in the weekends to watch multiple games anyway. Given the time different to NZ you have to make a proper commitment to watch other games rather than them just being on in the late afternoon or evening when you're sitting at home anyway.

Anyway enjoyed these 2 games. So refreshing how enjoyable and relaxed watching a game is without the stress of your team being involved.

Not sure how I feel about playoffs deciding a league season. Feels very American to me - if you finished 3rd after a 46 game league season, surely you deserve 3rd place. But I suppose while 1st may be out of reach for many teams, 6th having a chance of promotion gives more teams something to play for.

For all their extreme consistency and the talk of a Quadruple they ended up playing 5 and a half hours of football across 3 finals and didn't score a single goal in them. Obviously would have traded places but still enjoyed how their season ended. It must be a massive disappointment in the end.

Klopp has certainly built a bit of a dynasty there now. Diaz and Jota have now come in to basically pick up the can from Firmino and Mane. Thiago will be fitter next year and looks the business next to Fabinho. The fullbacks are both young, Matip and Konate are very solid rotating with van Dijk.
They should be very very good for a few seasons to come.
Going to be hard for anyone to break that top 2.

Don't know that he makes a massive material difference to them at this point other than obviously stopping one of their rivals getting him. The playing field is already not level and it's already not possible to beat them over a league season before he is added.
They don't win all the cups every season because the nature of knockout football means there's still a chance they can lose a one off match.
