A-Leagues 21/22, The Other Matches Thread

They played great tournament ball. 
Imai and Young were also very worthy winners.
We were the only team that threatened them in the finals.

Two of the most unlikeable teams in the league, but Western were deserving. 

It doesn't make me happy in any way to say that, but it is what it is...

How big was the crowd? Met John Aloisi once. Struck me as a super nice guy.

I think this result shows Nix are not too far off, if they recruit well over the next few months, get a normal H&A season, and avoid a heap of midweek games with an injury/Covid depleted side. They are not far off with the above in their favour.

I’m surprisingly pleased with western winning that. I didn’t give them a chance ay. I thought city would be too clinical but after the oggie the managed the game perfectly. 
I’m also a huge diamanti and having dura there celebrating was pretty cool to see. 
But… I think that we are a better team than western. They only place they are better is having a quality striker. Bring on some uffie recruitment magic and us smashing them next year.

So I guess that leaves two teams without having ever won either the Grand Final or the Premier’s Plate, and one of them is only two seasons old. One of them also has a monopoly on the talent of an entire country, something no other team has.

It's a shame that the whole exploiting the monopoly on NZ players thing is only a relatively recent strategy, for the bulk of our existence we've ignored NZ talent and relied on Australian journeymen. I remember a couple of games under Ricki when it  seemed like we only had three or four kiwis on the park - and one of those was Durante.

Still, we should have won it in either 2009-2010, 2014-2015, or 2019-2020 but for various reasons imploded.

Heck, we had form coming into the finals this season that Western United didn't, so could have had a run this year too. Doesn't feel too far off, just need a couple more things to click into place.

Kind of wonder if there is a strategic vision for the league.
This is in theory a derby game grand final. Was WU an FFA screw you to the new league? Dodgy stadium promises and money before crowds. It’s only a couple of levels above GC United, though the committed team, winning the GF and John Aloisi can’t hurt. 

It’s such the opposite of WSW entry as a club. How are WSW’s numbers btw? Lost all those packed houses right? Are they still in the same stadium? What happened to all that Poznań and flairs stuff?

Have to wonder how our numbers will hold up next year too. The last two years have in effect had exhibition game crowds. No real guide on week in week out commitment.

what we are missing is that we are not an aussie club - end of.
if we had this team and management at sydney we'd have won the league years ago.

We came 3rd in year 3 so one game away from the final.

But,wu has a higher salary cap because they're new, we didn't get that.
