Cancel the contract... then offer him a pay as you play deal with incentives.
Basically they don't pay for a body, but if he gets fit he is rewarded fairly?

Still had a year on his contract, so pay out will be decent.

Hard on Thomas but not entirely unexpected given how long he's been sidelined with injury.
Will he take that deal or will he look more a team where he can build up his fitness/complete rehab?

PSV (2nd) travel to Feyenoord (3rd)

Elsewhere Ajax (1st) needed a late 88th equaliser to draw 2-2 at AZ (5th). Ajax have have grabbed a few late goals this campaign, to keep themselves top.

Anyway if (big if) PSV win at Feyenoord and they will close to within 2 pts of Ajax
https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2022/05/08/netherlands/eredivisie/stichting-az/afc-ajax/3512737/

Edit - heart break for PSV. Feyenoord with 2 late goals (88th & 96th mins) to snatch a 2-2 draw. So the gap on Ajax stays at 4 points.

If AZ had been able to hold on for a win earlier, and PSV hadn't blown a 2-0 lead so so late on - they would be level with their big Amsterdam rivals!! Dramatic day in the Eredivisie

Hard to see them catching them catching Ajax now. 2 rounds left

Ajax - home against Heerenveen (8th) and away to Vitesse (6th).
PSV - home against NEC (9th) and away to PEC Zwolle (18th/last, scrapping to get into relegation playoff spot of 16th).

From Flying Kiwis.

Eindhovens Dagblad: “PSV has informed Ryan Thomas that his expiring contract will not be extended. There is, however, still a possibility that parties will enter into discussions to explore a collaboration in the future. The midfielder, who was signed from PEC Zwolle in 2018, has suffered a lot of injuries in Eindhoven in recent years and has barely played this season. It is unclear whether Thomas will still be considered and also depends on his recovery. Perhaps there is still a hook for him, but there are no guarantees. The New Zealander is valued at PSV for his contribution but the past few seasons have nevertheless been disappointing for him.”

That’s the scoop. What they’re talking about there, because it is a bit confusing between the expiring contract and not extending him but maybe still offering him a new deal, is the contract-option that they had for one more year on his existing deal. There was a deadline involved in when they had to decide (the start of May) and now they’ve decided against taking it up which potentially leaves Ryan Thomas as a free agent in two months.

Eran Zahavi has also had the same treatment though for the Israeli striker that’s as much about him wanting to leave as anything (and PSV being happy to lose one of their top earners). He was close to departing in the winter break but ultimately stayed on to finish the term. Chances are he’s already got something else lined up. As for Thommo, with him it’s about all the injuries and how unavailable he’s been. By the end of this season he’ll have played 33 out of a possible 136 Eredivisie fixtures since he joined the club.

But, as the article says, there’s still a chance they offer him a separate deal. Could be something more tailored towards appearances made. Could be just biding their time to see how his recovery goes before offering him something similar to what he might have gotten. Time will tell. It’s a sad turn of events but hardly a surprising one, let’s be honest.

Doesn’t look like Thommo will leave PSV as a league champion (if he does indeed depart). Ajax drew 2-2 with AZ this week and they needed an 86th minute Edson Alvarez goal to get that much out of the game... however PSV weren’t able to capitalise as they also drew 2-2. They were 2-0 up after half an hour and held that lead for most of the match until Cyril Dessers struck in the 86th and 90th minutes for Feyenoord. The second from the penalty spot. PSV could have moved within two points of Ajax with a win, keeping the pressure on with two matches left. Instead they’re going to need Ajax to drop points in both remaining fixtures. On the positive side, by avoiding defeat to Feyenoord they’re at least guaranteed a Champions League qualifying spot next term. Maybe Ryan Thomas will get to be a part of that, maybe not.

Elsewhere Ajax (1st) host Heerenveen (8th).

With a win Ajax will clinch the Eredivisie title. PSV blew their chance on the weekend, 2-0 up at Feyenoord late on. At least they have their Dutch Cup win.

Edit - PSV up 2-0 at HT. But Ajax are spanking Heerenveen, 3-0 at the juncture. Eredivisie title is Ajax's for 3rd time in a row. 19/20 season was abandoned (Covid) so Ajax have won title 3 of the last 4 seasons, ie the last 3 completed versions.

PSV do have 2nd - UEFA Champions League Qualifier spot already locked up, plus their Dutch Cup win.

Edit - PSV won 3-2, and champions Ajax 5-0.

PSV finish their season with effectively a dead rubber.

Travel to PEC Zwolle (Thomas's old club) who have been relegated already, and PSV will finish season 2nd no matter what.

Edit - a 2-1 win to PSV. Ajax with a 2-2 draw in their final game at Vitesse, to finish just the 2 points ahead of the Eindhoven team.

Now to see if PSV re-sign Thomas or not.

Note down in the 2nd tier, Almere City, Woud's old team finished 14th, well out of the promotion playoff spots.

From Flying Kiwis.

Joey Veerman is doubtful for Wednesday as he has picked up a calf injury in the clash with Feyenoord.  Ryan Thomas, André Ramalho, Yorbe Vertessen, Carlos Vinícius, Olivier Boscagli, Phillipp Mwene and Armando Obispo are out for the rest of the season.”

That was PSV coach Roger Schmidt speaking ahead of a 3-2 win over NEC Nijmegen on Thursday NZT. The last home game of the season and second to last overall – the final game was a 2-1 win against Thommo’s old club PEC Zwolle (who had already been relegated) a few days later. Officially ruling Ryan Thomas out for the campaign and with his contract option having been declined that could mean he’s played his last match for the Eindhoven club. Schmidt has certainly coached his last – he announced his impending departure months ago and has already signed to coach Benfica next season with Ruud Van Nistelrooy taking over at PSV.

That hefty injury list meant that PSV had to fill out the squad with a number of youth players although the eleven they started with was still very strong. However Ajax won 5-0 against Heerenveen in a concurrent fixture which meant that they clinched the Eredivisie title once again. Shout out to them, s’pose.

Ryan Thomas hasn’t played since October. He’d already been ruled out of the All Whites intercontinental playoff in a few weeks due to what in the very least would have been a lack of match fitness. He has been getting more involved in training over the last month or two but it’s been a slow recovery from injury and it’s hard to say where his career goes from here. Best we just stay patient with it.

After a whole bunch of ups and downs, Ryan’s time at PSV has finally come to an end. Here’s hoping he can get back to full fitness and bounces back at a high level.

From Flying Kiwis. Not a great update.

"Here’s to those beautiful moments. The writing was probably on the wall when PSV declined Ryan Thomas’ contract option for next season but there was talk that they might negotiate something else. However now it’s been confirmed that Thommo will be leaving the Eindhoven club when his current deal expires at the beginning of July... although the club has told him that he’s still welcome to hang around and make use of their facilities as he attempts to get his career back on track after persistent injuries, especially to his knee.

Thomas busted his knee within a week of first signing for the club in 2018 and hasn’t played since last October due to his latest surgery. His release really had a lot less to do with his talent or fit and more to do with him only played 33 Eredivise games across those four seasons (plus another 15 matches in various cup competitions – including 8 Europa League appearances). Just those persistent injury clouds, unfortunately. There’s no set end in sight either.

This is an especially concerning quote from PSV Inside (based on reporting from EL):
The situation surrounding his injuries is a question mark. Roger Schmidt recently said that no one really knows what exactly is wrong with Thomas' knee. He will probably have to watch for months and may not return to the field until 2023.”

He’s already gonna miss the WCQ Intercontinental Playoff now it sounds like he’s a good bet to miss the World Cup itself even if the All Whites do qualify. Not happy news. At the very least it means that we probably shouldn’t speculate on his next club given that he might have a long road back to fitness first. Maybe Winston Reid can set him up with his personal trainer, they seem to have done a hell of a job with him.

Ryan Thomas wasn’t able to get himself an Eredivisie winner’s medal in his four years with PSV. They came as close as ever this term, running Ajax into the last couple games, but ultimately it was Ajax who won three titles in a row with one season abandoned due to the pandemic. Thommo did however get two runners-up medals as well as a KNVB Cup and Super Cup title this 2021-22 term. He didn’t actually play in either of those finals but he had already won both of them in his PEC Zwolle days so all goods. Two of each to his name. By the way, if you’re forecasting a PEC Zwolle return then maybe don’t because they got relegated this season.

Up Next: More rehab, basically"

That's really bad news for Ryan and NZ Football, one of our best players. Unfortunately not sounding good for Ryan on the injury front. Most players bounce back from ACL reconstructions with in a year. Some struggle with continued complications, which it sounds like Ryan is. It's been like 2 years now.
Could well be tough for him to get another high level contract. Once he gets himself right he might need to look at a lower league. Prove himself and his fitness first.
Ada Heggerberg who was women Ballon d'or a while back. took 20 months to recover from ACL reconstruction. But did recover and just got a goal and an assist in the Champions league final. So hope for Ryan yet. Sometimes time is the best healer.

Yeah doesn't sound great. Had surgery yet again?

Sadly he's never likely to get to Real Madrid one day, like his old Zwolle coach once said he had the potential to do. Lets just hope he returns to playing at some level soonest.

Actually that old Zwolle coach Ron Jans, who went on to coach Cincinnati in their first MLS season, is now with Twente in the Eredivisie (4th last season). Zwolle were relegated last season down to the 2nd tier.
Ryan Thomas is happy that PSV wants to help him come back: "Fortunately, we were careful at home with what I earned"

Ryan Thomas faces months of recovery after another knee surgery. The adventure at PSV is over after four years, but he does not blame the club. ,,PSV wants to help me move forward again and I really appreciate that. I'm going to be a professional footballer again, at whatever level."

Such an unfortunate set of circumstances for arguably one of the most technically gifted footballers NZ has ever produced. Hopefully he can overcome, maybe come to the nix or another less intense league to rehab the injury until his body is ready to make a step up again. Giuseppe Rossi is still going, so there is some hope that Ryan can bounce back!

And if rumors are to be believed Rossi almost signed for the Nix a few years back.

But yeah, a shorter league season and also a team with world class sports science and rehab facilities and a long off season to do rehab him. Would be great, but you'd think he'll try and rehab in the Netherlands and also would the Nix want to risk it considering they're already rehabbing Rufer.

I'd say zero chance he'd be interested in coming to NZ. Has stated he will live in Holland post football, so I reckon he won't go far from there with his next move. Will keep his young family near their Dutch whanau.

Are his British born parents also back living in the UK? Thought I may have read that somewhere. Could be completely wrong.

PSV had him on reasonably lightest playing load prior this latest injury setback. With their big quality squad they were doing a fair bit of rotation as it was.

Ryan Thomas had a rare surgery last week: his kneecap was brought down and in to finally fix the problems in the joint. The midfielder who left PSV will have to rehabilitate in the coming months.

Thomas (27) has been haunted by bad luck for years and says he has a lot of support from his wife and children. He doesn't think about stopping. "I definitely believe that I can still play good football in the future."

At what level that is, the midfielder doesn't matter at the moment. "I have to work hard in the coming months and then we'll see what comes. I'm not concerned with the level.
Even if I have to start in the First Division, that's not a big problem for the first six months. not my starting point. I will keep all doors open, but I will play football again in 2023. Absolutely."

He uploaded this Reel to his Instagram a week ago showing him doing a bit of all around stuff. Hopefully that means he could be ready for a club in January. I think I read a while back that he doesn't really care where he goes, just that he wants a place where he can back into the swing of things, given he's hardly played since last season. But I'd be a bit surprised if he's too far from the Netherlands, given his young family. Also a nice touch to see PSV assisting with his rehab with the trainer and facilities, despite not being contracted to them.

Too good surely for 2nd tier football in Holland. Though Zwolle are currently 2nd (2 teams automatically promoted), so he may only be looking at half a season at that level if he went back there.

On current form Bell would likely be on the bench, behind Stamenic & Garbett.

In a case of what could have been, seems both Singh & Thomas would have been fit enough to go to the World Cup.

From Flying Kiwis.

PEC Zwolle technical director Marcel Boudesteyn: “Ryan has a fantastic history here, of course. The fact that he is now returning is very good news for us on several fronts. With Ryan we have added a strong and now very experienced player to our roster who will be of great value in our midfield. At 27 years of age, there are still many beautiful football years ahead. Ryan has had a long rehabilitation in Eindhoven and is now training on the field again. I am hopeful that he can join the selection before the end of this year. Finally, I wish Ryan welcome home in Zwolle and good luck in the coming months.”

Ryan Thomas: “At PEC Zwolle I experienced the best day of my football career, but it’s not only that. I owe a lot to this club. They gave me the chance to play professional football in Europe almost ten years ago. Zwolle feels like home to me and my family. After a very nice period in Eindhoven with ups and downs, I feel stronger than ever and I'm really looking forward to playing football again.”
