San Diego (3rd in the USL West) do a long haul US coast to coast trip, to play to New York RB II (14th & last in the East).

Same as last SD game, Adams starting & Boxall jnr on the bench. Hopefully none of the AWs 5 CBs get injured. Long long trip for Nikko Boxall, San Diego to Qatar. I guess 4 should be enough if one went down, plus also have Payne as cover.

Full game Adams & Boxall an unused sub, as San Diego draw 2-2 at New York RB II.
Loyal with their 2nd goal late at 88 mins. A HT sub with both Loyal goals.

Is a bit surprising Adams has never been mentioned for being around the national team fold, given he seems to be ahead of in/out AW Nikko Boxall in the pecking order at San Diego, with also having age on his side too. I suppose if he really was desperate he could always move to a Nordic second tier to get a better chance in the national team.

Well it's up to him really to move elsewhere, if he thinks that will see him more on the AWs radar. It's pretty clear Hay doesn't rate the USL that much, and it's likely warranted.

But guys like Adams, Collier, Wynne, Musa once they get that Green card don't seem to want to leave the States. Maybe they get US partners, start to see career opportunities there post football etc, and decide they are just happy where they are.

Though post Qatar (whether AWs get there or not), all 3 of Reid, Smith and Boxall (33, 32 & 33) could retire from international football. If so likes of Adams will definitely rise up the Piney's top 50 ranking list.

Why is it likely warranted??? I don't get comments like that, Danish 2nd tier compared to US 2nd tier, Fin 1st tier. How do you actually measure it being warranted?

Well for what it's worth (likely very very little) the USL is ranked 31st, on this professional football leagues ranking website. Ahead of Danish 2nd tier, Finnish top tier etc.
https://www.globalfootballrankings.com/

But the USA lower leagues are a bit of a mess. Constantly changing the structure, new teams coming in and others folding or moving to new leagues like the MLS Next Pro. That's where most the MLS reserve teams now play, like Trevor Zwetsloot's New England Revolution II.

So surely that means alot of the young talent on the fringes of MLS has moved out of the USL Championship to this new MLS Next Pro comp. Diluting the talent level in the USL. The MLS Next Pro has also introduced a gimmick, with pen shootouts if is a draw in NT. Never a great sign for a serious football comp.

The 27 team USL Championship like all US leagues (and ALM) has no pro rel. This means that by mid season some of the lower table sides quickly have nothing to play for. So I'm guessing quality of games for those particular teams involved could be questionable as they start experimenting early with an eye to the following season etc. There is 14 teams in Eastern Division, and 13 in the Western Division.
https://us.soccerway.com/national/united-states/mls-reserve-league/2022/regular-season/r67284/

I see that the quarterfinals of US Open Cup consists of 7 MLS teams and only 1 from a lower league (Omaha from USL League One). This despite MLS teams not taking the low prestige Cup comp that seriously, often running out reserve players. So suggests a bit of gulf between MLS and lower leagues.

Also guys like Musa (briefly with Minnesota), Collier (3 seasons, for 1 goal at Chicago) and Kyle Adams (very briefly at Houston) have been signed to MLS teams from the USL. None of them made the cut in truth. Did read an article a year or so ago, that with MLS clubs the USL has a bit of a stigma, is not rated, and clubs prefer to draft college youngsters, or sign foreigners (mostly Latinos).

The college youngsters then mostly loaned out to USL affiliate clubs, or now I guess they are playing in MLS Next Pro for MLS reserve teams.

Lastly hopefully Danny Hay is a better judge of football talent than 90% of us. From November 2019 to Olympics last year he was basically a phantom coach. I'm presuming he spent a lot of that 1.5 years poring through football videos/live games of Kiwi players overseas. He would have watched a bit of the USL. More than probably any other Kiwi. So he will know the level well, and what likes of Adams, Collier, Musa, Wynne etc offer.

So if Hay's not picking Kiwis from the USL, except Nikko Boxall (first season in USL after playing in Europe a long time) and Collier (did have 3 seasons in the MLS '18, '20 & '21) - I trust it's for good reason.

It's interesting Southgate recently mentioned how monitoring players in different leagues to determine how they performing is difficult Italy v Germany v England.
I would like to see the US based guys like Musa and Adams etc give a bit more of a chance.

Local derby for San Diego. Adams was singled out for praise by the commentators for his aerial work, I wouldn’t mind him getting a national team look in, especially if Reid is injured. At the very least Landon Donovan views him as better than Nikko Boxall, so he can’t be too bad. There wouldn’t be many NZers in history with more professional appearances than him with no AW caps; maybe Kwabena Appiah?

Also they have a nice wee banner in the crowd there in San Diego.

'Battle of the Saints', and Kiwi USL derby top of the table match up.
San Diego (2nd in the West) host San Antonio (1st)

Adams starts for SD, with Boxall jnr on the pine. Sadly no Collier for SA.

https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2022/08/07/united-states/mls-reserve-league/san-diego-loyal/san-antonio/3728772/

Edit - San Diego (2nd) win 3-0. Full game Adams, and Boxall an unused sub.

Despite the loss San Antonio (1st) still 4 pts clear, plus have a game in hand.

Not sure what guide you can take from their club appearances, but Adams is a locked on starter with SD, whilst Boxall jnr is barely getting a look in. Either could be in line for the AWs in September - given Reid is still clubless, Smith currently injured, plus might be tricky to get M Boxall/Tuiloma released (business end of MLS season) etc etc

I'm picking the AWs CBs against China will come from Pijnaker, Payne, N Boxall, Kyle Adams & Surman. Brotherton may even come back into the mix now that he is back playing pro football in the USL

Tuiloma & M Boxall I'm picking will skip the games (friendlies under an interim coach after all) as their MLS clubs are playing through the March FIFA window. Same Tommy Smith (injured at the moment anyway) as League Two also plays through the window. Though if Colchester are looking safe from relegation, he could make it a good series of games to retire from the AWs in NZ aka Reid.

Move it back again. 😅

He's signed on for FC Inter Turku over in Finland. His fourth club at that level in Finland over the course of his career. Already has 100+ appearances to his name in the Veikkausliiga as well.

Good move for him, and best of luck to him too. Contract (initially) is to run until the end of the current season by the way.
