Really hard to pick a starting 11.  Without really seeing any of there games or line-ups.  Also hard to know how do you pick Wynham and Collins both in Gemma Lewis preferred 433 line-up. So I'm going to change to 4231 to fit them both in.

        Wisnewski                   Jensen

Prediction   1-1 draw.

Mexico the better team in that first half for me. So we are perhaps a bit lucky 1-1 at half time. Mexico touch and pass far superior to our girls. Taylor Wisnewski are leading by example. But we need more from our wide players. Pritchard and Collins not offering much of an outlet, and when they do get the ball turning it over far to easily. Our girls looked very nervous in that first half. Hopefully nerves can settle and we can offer a bit more quality.

Definitely a shaky showing from us so far. But good to get a fortunate goal, hopefully we can get something out of the game.

Seems like more of the same second half, just on the stats at least. Mexico up to 19 shots, 9 on target, sheesh. Seems pretty typical of NZ at a tournament like this. Anyway, still 1-1 in 86th minute.

1-1 against Mexico is a great result, if the girls can hold onto this they should be well proud.

Sounds like both goals were on the lucky side.

Thought we struggled alot. The humidity (80%) seemed to sap alot of energy out of our players, as a result we didn't look particularly match fit. Lots of cramping, giving up on chasing loose balls. Meaning we couldn't play much of a high press that Gemma Lewis likes to talk up. And towards the end some of our skills under pressure were pretty woeful, meaning alot of backs to the wall defending but they dug in and managed to hold on for the draw. So credit there. Mexico look like a talented team, they will be disappointed with this result. Our girls don't look quite as competitive as last U17 world cup. And it doesn't get any easier with Germany up next with a quick turnaround.
Taylor and Neidermeyer our CB pairing stood out. Particularly Taylor. Wisnewski was best in midfield. Thought Lancaster was good when she came on. Whynam good with ball at feet, but unable to really connect up with team mates. Thought some of the other Nix girls were a bit disappointing though.

Yes , But Mexico is not a power in women's football, they failed to qualify for the senior world cup, but again senior womens team football and u20 football is very different, as seen when Germany lost to Colombia

Yes but Mexico were runners up at the last U17 womens world cup. So doing well at age group level.

Conditions in Costa Rica obviously not suiting Gemma Lewis game plan of aggressive high press. Was 25 degrees and 80% humidity. Pretty energy sapping. Kick off was at 2pm local time, which wouldn't have helped.
Game against Germany is a 11am kick off, so hopefully not so hot. But that game today would have taken a lot out of the girls. With just a 3 day turn around now.

Be interesting to see how Australia go at this tournament. They put 3 goals past Mexico in a pre tournament friendly. They also scored 3 against Columbia. So should be confident in front of goal.

Hopefully the football ferns don't play like Costa Rica has next year. First game really is vital when only top 2 go through.

Despite the final score line. I thought that the U20 girls did ok against Germany. Held them scoreless for an hour before conceding from a corner then giving away a penalty 5 min later. But still lacking that extra bit of quality needed up front. We created a few decent half chances, but just couldn't put anything away. Was good to see us push for a goal after we went behind, and were unlucky to concede the third on the counter.  Pretty good performances across the backline and in midfield I thought. With Jensen and Wisnewski having strong games. Taylor was great again. Player of the match even though she was on the losing team.
Thought this was actually a better all round team performance then the last game. Less errors and better combinations. Never going to be easy against Germany though. One of the powerhouses of women's football.

Agree with your summary. Thought they played better together. Had a couple of quite good chances.

I can't see us winning by two if we keep the same system come Wednesday.

Clegg saw nothing of the ball and Windham too often isolated and marked out of the game. We need to get an extra player up top IMO, perhaps revert to a back three and play WB's to provide the width. Give McKeenan (the Welnix RB) a run, use her engine.

Wingers IMO have offered very very little, so lets pack the middle of the park more.

I think the game against Columbia will be a lot closer and if we can take our chances, no reason we can't get a win.
But agree we need some changes. Right wing isn't working for me. A change there, maybe put McMeekan up there for her crossing ability. Or put Lancaster on LW and Collins on RW.  Or put in a more technical player there that can at least link up, which isn't happening at the moment.
Surprised Macey Fraser hasn't featured. But was good to see Ruby Nathan get some minutes. Another eligible for the U17 WWC in a few months.
The teams overall performance at this tournament will be judged by how they go in this next game.

Interesting that Germany made six substitutions in four windows, two as a result of a head clash between two German players early on that saw both players eventually leave the field.  I was thinking at the time that has used up two windows.   I know that FIFA were trialling a concussion substitution protocol but I can't find anything that says it was in use for this tournament.

So is a 2-0 win enough against Columbia tomorrow if Germany beats Mexico ? Assuming it goes on goals scored if GD is equal?

Yes that's correct it goes on goals scored if GD is equal. If they win by 2 goals then they will qualify regardless of the result of the other game. If they win by just the 1 goal, they will finish 3rd in the group behind Columbia.

Edit. We have nothing to lose in this game so I hope the girls go for it. Won't be easy though. Columbia have not conceded a goal yet in this tournament. But I feel that if we can score and go 1 up. All the pressure will be on them. And pressure and the weight of expectation can make a big difference in a football game.

1-1 against Columbia, we scored first too, well constructed, and well taken. Pity the defence let the keeper down on their goal though.

Unfortunately not the best defensive showing by us. There pace is making us indecisive and we keep giving the ball away unnecessarily

Big call coming up here on a potential red card.

Didn't look like anything in normal viewing. Slowed down and looked at again and again on slow motion - And it is RED for the Colombian!

Without VAR I would have thought yellow would suffice given there wasn't much behind it, Colombian trying to shield a loose ball and put foot between Pritchard and ball and caught Prichard on the shin - Pritchard didn't even appeal. With VAR you could see studs halfway up Pritchard's shin, so red

Substitute Lancaster has a cross come shot from outside the box on the right flank, and it dips underneath the cross bar!

Mexico lead Germany 1-0 in the other group game. Quarter of an hour to go.
