And pleasing to see De Gea commit to and get a good fist on a couple of punches under the high ball.

I remember when we first signed Reina and he was pretty suspect at crosses/ under the high ball. And I seem to remember he went through a period of just punching everything that came his way until he was more comfortable at catching. Worked a treat and he's never looked back. Perhaps United are trying a similar thing with de Gea? Is he turning into the keeper we knew he was or does everyone still hate him...

Great shot stopper; great with ball at his feet (though noticed he is playing safer - ie long- more often); just that he is a slight build and looked suss under high ball in the 6 yard box. From the little La Liga I've watched the teams seem to go to the byline and cross far less often than in EPL. Early aforementioned dodgyness hopefully just adjustment period. Also, not sure what his English is like and communication is a huge part of keeping. On balance he's certainly kept us in it more often than not so far this season. And he's only a kid for a keeper. Hope he stays a while. Stretford End2012-03-31 17:52:28

Win over Blackburn at Ewood tomorrow will see us 5 clear (Rovers will be desperate and we have poor recent record there)
Win on Saturday v QPR will see us 8 clear with ManCity to play Arsenal at the Emirates.
Then 6 games to go.
One game at a time, one game at a time, one game at a time...
Squeaky bum time indeed.

That 3 points is gold.
Only saw last 30 minutes and highlights. Initial critique:
1. De Gea made some absolute class leaps to save 3 or 4 goals. If you watch his fumble from the Blackburn freekick (which we managed to clear) you'll see that Scholes INEXPLICABLY jumped so that the shot went through the wall. I'd give a tongue lashing to a 12 year old for that!
2. Playing Carrick AND Scholes AND Giggs (until about 60-70 min) meant we were lop-sided in attack as Giggs doesn't play as a left winger anymore; so everything went down DaSilva's and Valencia's right wing - a little predictably.
Much better when Young came on for Scholes to work the left with Evra.
5 points clear and QPR at home next up.

Way too right sided - only had Evra bombing down the left for most of the match. Having said that, Valenica is so good though, it's kind of worth channelling all our efforts through him.

Great goals, great win.

Utd had so much possession they did not know what to do with it.Apart from Hernandez in the first half they never really looked like scoring.
Jones may be a good player, but it was only when Giggs came on that Utd started to open up the Rovers defence.
Valencia's goal was a thunderbolt(it was also a cross) and it was only the pace that beat the keeper. Youngs goal was very good but the defender should never let him turn. Who cares, 5 points clear, but still some way to go.

Love the end-on shot of Young's goal, looks as though it's heading for the post or even wide, then at the last minute just settles perfecty into the corner of the net.

Paulinho, I love any goal that puts us 2 nil up!
Young has a great curl on his right foot and that shot was another example.

Leggy, I reckon Valencia WAS going for goal and not a a cross - because the keeper was slightly out of position - too close to his near post.

Still a lot of points to play for yet.

Perhaps, but in those situations just blasting accross the face of the goal and anything can happen.
Your right about 'still a long way to go'
Interesting weekend coming up.Some of the 'haters' are torn between wanting to beat City, and perhaps Utd going 8 points clear, or losing and perhaps Spurs to go 3 points clear.. What a dilemma. Leggy2012-04-04 17:03:49

The traditional and expected United Penalty and a red card too. Young should hang his head in shame. The referee & linesmen had clear unobstructed views and still got it wrong. It killed the game at that moment. United might have won 8-2 or drawn or even lost (Not that that ref would have allowed that to happen), who knows but the game and football lost today.

Found this piece. Seems some things don't change....

Aston Villa: Ashley Young says accusations of cheating hurt more than fouls

ASHLEY Young has launched an impassioned defence of his integrity and denied he is a cheat ahead of potentially his last-ever match for Villa this weekend.

Young could be pulling on the claret and blue for the final time with suitors, including Sundays opponents Liverpool, expected to bid for him in the summer.

The 25-year-old England stars delay over signing a bumper new contract at Villa Park could spark a 20 million scramble for his services in the close season.

Premier League champions Manchester United are strongly interested in signing Young, while FA Cup winners Manchester City are also monitoring the situation.

But before then Young is anxious to rid himself of the play-acting reputation which has blighted him throughout his four-and-a-half year spell at Villa.

Young has won more free-kicks than any other Premier League player this season with top-flight referees ruling he was fouled 88 times before last Sunday.

But the former Watford favourite insists accusations that he is a diver are more painful than the bumps and bruises his shins sport from illegal tackles.

Young has 12 yellow cards for club and country this season, but none for simulation, and he believes officials would book him if they felt he went down easily.

I think people saying that I go down too easily hurts more than being booted up in the air, to be honest, said Young. - Yeah right Ashley, we believe you...

I hear that on numerous occasions and then you look at the stats of me being the most fouled player.

Is it me thats going down easily or is it that I am genuinely being fouled? - You went down quicker than a $2 hooker.

Referees are now booking players for simulation, so if players are diving then theyre going to get booked.

Ive not been booked for diving, but Ive been the most fouled player.

Everyones entitled to their opinion. Its always going to be said that people are diving in the Premier League, but you just have to get on with it.

Red card spoilt the game but 3 points. Was offside, but Young was pushed in the back.A comedy of errors. An offside against Utd in the second half.
City only have themselves to blame. It is not over yet but if we can win the next two games then I will feel better.
Not bad for a team that everyone thinks is average.

You do have an average team but the rest of the league is worse. You do have a couple of things which are massive advantages IMO; a culture/expectation of winning ( such as we used to have a long time ago) and a gaffer who doesn't tolerate sh*t and will ship out talented but questionable individuals ( e.g Morrison).Don't need to spend a huge amount every year   so long as you but the right players.Title's yours fellas and you know it.Oddly , much as I hate you lot ( ), I'd rather you win it than either Chelsea or Citeh.

I don't have a team in England that I really care about supporting, but I find it odd that non-Man U fans would rather Man U won the EPL than City. I get it with Arsenal fans because of the player poaching that's gone on but it sems like plenty of others feel the same way. I personally would rather City win because for all the talk about it being more competitive than La Liga there have still only been 3 winners since Blackburn in 95, so for the competition as a whole I think it would be good to see that change. Plus when one team dominates so much I would think some old fashioned tall poppy syndrome would manifest. Or am I just underestimating how much people hate new money clubs?

The saddest thing about your season (other than you winning the league- that sucks!) is how much I wanted Atleti to play you in Europa League. Would've loved to knock you out of that

And yeah, I would rather City won it. I don't care enormously, but I would prefer them to United.

The whole concept of buying a title really grates with me.Blackburn did it of course but where are they now? I'd much rather a team win but pay attention to the development of the club as a whole.Otherwise you end up with a team of whores like Tevez and Balotelli- how's that working out? Much as I loath and detest Manure , Old Whisky Nose has had an eye for the future of the club for a long time. What's wrong with a team dominating for a long time? Just means every one else either raises their own games or gets left behind. We used to do it.The Arse did it for a decade. Is it good for the game?  On one level no , but if it raises the overall level then all good. If ManU has a structure in place that means they keep on winning , then keep on winning. I only wish it was us

You are quite right. I am old enought to remember Liverpool in the 70's and thinking that whenever they played it was a question of how many are they going to score today. They raised the bar, and Utd was one of the sides to take up the challenge.
The fact is that there are no 'crap' sides today and bottom sides can and do beat top teams.
With the amount of money 'City' spent on their players I reckon I would have done as good a job as Mancini.
