Hopefully NZF uses this as a chance to pick up some high quality friendlies vs AFC teams as they warm up for this.
Considering we're sweet with the Aussies we could even get in their ears re. appearing as a guest team... could happen amongst possibly expanding tournament to 16 teams

Stronger team than the one recently in Samoa. No new caps.

Returns - Moore, Ali Riley, Bott, Steinmetz & Satchell.
No Percival, no Clegg.

Not optimistic but hopefully Satchell is an improved player from her time now in the UK. Rubi Nathan (still yet to score in the ALW) keeps her spot. Whinham would have pushed her I reckon.

We should win and score 2+ each game, have selected a strong squad and they are pretty useless (probably similar in quality to Vietnam who we beat easily)

Looking at their most recent results - pumped by North Korea, South Korea and twice by China. Obviously those teams are better going forward than us, but we should still bag a fair few goals or so over the two matches.

If the Ferns (28th FIFA ranking) were in the AFC, they would actually be 6th best team in the Confederation, based off rankings. Not sure how the North Koreans are ranked so high??

https://inside.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/women
7th Japan
11th North Korea
12th Australia
19th China PR
20th South Korea
28th New Zealand

But longshot that AFC would allow Ferns to 'guest' at their Asian Cup Womens.
Copa America with guest teams is a bit of a different beast.

Wonder when Erin Nayler will announce her retirement from the Ferns?
Can't be far away.

Still I guess if either Leat or Esson got injured, she is still a chance of a squad callup for the Olympics and beyond.

Great experience for Danieli.

The sooner Nayler announces her retirement from internationals the better! Wonder why Edwards has decided to leave? Tired of sitting on the bench for every team she plays for?

Maybe with the games very short-term they figured it easier just to call up another NZ-based keeper. Wonder if Candy got a call though. You'll assume Danieli will just sit on the bench both games

NZ media scores for Saturdays game:
1 News - C Decent coverage on the sports news (after a whole lot of rugby), but nothing at all on their website or social channels.
NZHerald - D One measly article which had a few lines about the game, no highlights and just an embedding in of the Tribe coverage. Weak.
Newshub - B- Brief coverage on the news (but third item), plus an article on their website with a decent summary and the highlights.
Stuff - B+ Had both highlights and Tribe summary posted, then a decently writeup and detailed summary from Voerman.

New feature documentary doing the rounds in selected cinemas around the country:
"Copa '71"
"Tells the story of the 1971 Women’s World Cup, which saw soccer teams from all over the world gather in Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium to compete in front of more than 100,000 spectators. It was the last women’s World Cup until the official FIFA event 20 years later. Dismissed by the male-dominated football associations around the world, the event was written out of history — until now."
Produced by Venus and Serena Williams (who are also backers of Ai Riley's Angel FC side in the US NWSL) and US international Alex Morgan.

Details on that tournament here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Women%27s_World_Cup
"Held in Mexico City and Guadalajara, it is the second known tournament to be named as a women's football World Cup after the 1970 edition in Italy and the first time in the same place after the men's 1970 FIFA World Cup tournament in the previous year. It was held twenty years before the first official FIFA women's world cup.
The tournament featured six national teams from Latin America and Europe, including hosts Mexico which qualified automatically. Denmark were the tournament champions, defending its title by winning the final 3–0 against Mexico, in front of a 110,000 crowd.
The 1970 tournament in Italy featured women's teams from seven countries and is the first known tournament to be named as a women's football World Cup."

No participation from Asia or Oceania at that stage.

Nice to see Clegg return.
Sheaff interesting choice as the 3rd keeper. Edwards unavailable? Nayler done & dusted.

Satchell on the outer. Pijnenburg a bit unlucky. Longo still injured?

Hard to make the Olympics (18 + 4) if not in this 24 player squad.

Will be an interesting couple of games. Looking forward to see how we set up with some of the newer gen against a tough opponent - I know people go crazy when we don't score goals, but think cohesive defensive performances here are more important.

With respect to Satchell - would rather NZ relies on more technical attackers like Riley, Hand, Kitching at the moment, or at least younger players who can build that skill.

That's interesting, I thought the consensus was that Heraf was doing what was necessary but he was stymied by childish entitled players and "woke"

Not sure if there is a 'consenus' either way. As fractured as the playing group. Remembering that there was a significant cohort of the Ferns who actually supported Heraf.

Don't think was as black & white as Heraf just wanted them to play an awfully negative style. Trying to break some of the senior player power, that didn't always make the team that welcoming to new young players coming in etc etc.

Anyway that's all over now.

Victoria Esson – Rangers, SCO (23 caps/0 goals)
Anna Leat – Aston Villa, ENG (16/0)
Murphy Sheaff – Kansas State University, USA (0/0)

Righto, so who is Murphy Sheaff? Aside from being the only non-professional player in the squad, she’s here as the third-choice goalkeeper with Brianna Edwards unavailable. BE seems to be taking a break from the sport dating back to the last few weeks of the Wellington Phoenix season. Gotta do what you’ve gotta do. This sabbatical also led to her withdrawing from the previous national team squad hence why Aimee Danieli was called up as a replacement on that occasion. It made sense to simply summon up a Wellington Phoenix reserve for a home series like that, cut down on travel times/cost. But for an away tour ahead of a major tournament you’ve gotta stick to the hierarchy and that means Murphy Sheaff.

Like Edwards, Sheaff was born and raised in Australia but has played for Aotearoa through the age grades. In fact, she actually started ahead of Edwards at the last U20 World Cup. This isn’t her first Football Ferns call-up either, although she remains uncapped. Sheaff’s been doing the college thing these past couple of years, initially at Jacksonville University where she didn’t play all the time but she did log the best save percentage in all of NCAA Division 1 soccer in 2022 (keeping five clean sheets in eight starts), then she transferred to Kansas State where she could be the undisputed number one and had another strong campaign. With Bri Edwards out and Bundesliga champion Erin Nayler not having played a single game all season, Murphy Sheaff was the next keeper in line. Simple as that.

But it’s all academic when it comes to third-choice keepers because this team has two number ones. Vic Esson is currently in the middle of her finest run of games for Rangers, who narrowly missed out on the SWPL title due to goal difference (largely because they only drew 0-0 with eventual champs Celtic a few weeks ago, Esson keeping the clean sheet). But Rangers have already won the League Cup and there’s a Scottish Cup final in a few days. Meanwhile Anna Leat had a slight hiccup when she was red carded against Chelsea a few weeks back but otherwise she’s been excellent for Aston Villa, closing the season out while regular starter Daphne van Domselaar was injured. That culminated in a spectacular individual performance, earning Player of the Day honours from the BBC crew, in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the final round. Leat made eight saves to leave the City players in tears after they missed out on the WSL title due to goal difference.

Since the World Cup, the goalkeeping starts have gone:
Esson, Leat, Leat, Leat, Edwards, Leat, Esson, Leat, Esson, Leat, Esson

Off the field maybe, I can't say.
But i witnessed what he put up on the field, and it was a disgusting showing, not fit for a paying audience.
