Actually I think there might be a FIFA reg that allows you to sign outside the window if you have not been paid.

From the A-League explainer on the transfer window (Link)

"Can clubs register a player outside the Registration Period?

Alternatively, a player can be registered if FFA is satisfied that 'exceptional circumstances' exist, for example if an individual has terminated their contract at another club with just cause.

If a player is signing from overseas under 'exceptional circumstances', FFA requires approval from the sport's international governing body FIFA."

Sounds like a lot of paperwork to prove to FFA and FIFA

Irrespective of this season or next, we should look to get him. Still raw but he is exciting and if Reno leaves us (which will happen) he isn’t a bad replacement at all

Giresunspor (16th) with a 1-0 win at bottom team Yeni Malatyaspor this morning. Giresunspor now 10 pts clear of the drop zone with 6 rounds left, so starting to look safe.

Elsewhere Tyler Boyd with an assist as Rizespor (18th) had a 2-1 win. But Rizespor are also 10 pts behind Giresunspor so do look a bit relegation doomed. Spots 17th-20th go down. Boyd's next gig a MLS deal?

Mods - please move Champness to Unattached FC.

From Flying Kiwis.

"This has been an ongoing situation for a short while now. Rumour has it that Joe Champness has left Giresunspor after agreeing to a contract termination. He hasn’t played as much as he’d like and with the club in some financial murk he’d have been one of the first they looked to in order to clear some dollars off the books.

But here’s the thing: Turkish media folks have been teasing this exclusive departure for about two weeks now and yet still there has been no official word from the club itself. Transfermarkt reckons he left at the start of April and has him listed as without a club. Extremely odd situation. Champness played 11 league games for Giresunspor scoring 2 goals. He also had 2 goals and an assist in two cup apps. He’d only played 25 combined minutes over two subs apps since the start of 2022 though."

Up Next: Umm... not too sure

No Champness as Giresunspor (16th) lose 2-1 at Fatih Karagümrük (9th).

Giresunspor 10 pts above the drop zone with 4-5 games left in the league. So should be safe.

Giresunspor (16th) host Adana Demirspor (5th). No Champness.

A win for Giresunspor, and likely even a draw with confirm they have avoided relegation.

Elsewhere Tyler Boyd's Rizespor (18th) have to win this weekend, to have any chance to avoid the drop. They are 10 pts behind Giresunspor  & safety with 4 games left. They copped a 0-6 hiding from Fenerbahce last game - not helped by a send off in the 1st min. Rizespor's relegation seems inevitable. Be interesting to see where Boyd goes, at season's end.
https://us.soccerway.com/national/turkey/super-lig/20212022/regular-season/r63067/

Edit - Finishes a 2-0 win to Giresunspor. Ensures they won't be relegated, and basically condemns Boyd's Rizespor to the drop.

Socials don't really dig up anything, hasn't posted on Instagram since June when in Auckland.

I did find the legal proceedings for his case against Giresunspor on the FIFA disputes portal though. Reasonably interesting read through. So, provided he's received that money, he could just be doing his own thing away from football, given Europe didn't really work out for him.

Jeez that's a fair whack, let's just call it a nice round €790,000!

No wonder nothing has really come to fruition on finding a new club. In saying that, Turkey has a particularly poor record in terms of these types of disputes.

That's the kind of money, especially coming from A-League stock that will set a player up very nicely. There's no way he'd be earning that kind of dosh if he was back in NZ or Australia - even over an entire 3-4 year contract. Hopefully he ends up getting his money though.

It's a shame he hasn't found a club yet though. Has he been prevented from doing so based on the issues in Turkey?
He's already lost valuable development time by pursing music. He has plenty of talent but he needs to be training and playing day in, day out if he wants to get anywhere.

The FIFA decision says that Giresunspor would face a registration ban if they didn't pay up in 45 days; if there wasn't a registration ban, then they must have paid up, and I wouldn't blame Champness for chillaxing somewhere that's not in the vicinity of the Black Sea active war zone

Totally agreed, however you'd think he would ve in fairly high demand given the last few games he's had in a white shirt.
The fact that he hasn't found ANY club that works for him is worrying. When he decided to come back to the game (and soon after switched allegiance to NZ) it sounded like he was really into it. Not saying he doesn't want to be a footballer anymore, but I am starting to at least have some doubts.

Any updates? Has he really not been able to find a half decent gig? Thought he did so well during WC qualification but that's starting to feel like a long time ago now. Can't really have 2 non-injury related career breaks and expect to be a top tier footballer, even just at A-league level

Yep he is looking trim indeed. Tournament seems to be a mix of pro's, ex pro's, college footballers, youngsters and prospects, as well as a few social media personalities for good measure.

Still, a good line up of teams too, including the likes of (but not limited to) Club Necaxa (Liga MX), Wolverhampton (EPL), West Ham (EPL), Hapoel Tel Aviv (Israel), & Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga).

Already some major controversy involving the West Ham side too...

Sad to see that, but it seems Dallas has been withdrawn from the tournament as a result.

Anyway, hopefully JOWIC is using this as a platform to keep fit. Matches look fast paced and technical. So it should be right up his alley.

Found footage of his sides games against Dallas too. Starts off on the right hand side.

Doesn't get paid ➡️ Leaves club ➡️ Takes legal action & wins ➡️ Football wilderness ➡️ Door opens for a possible return to same club for 2023/2024 season.

Just weird situation all round. Surprised it's not something that's been picked up on. Surely not something that happens too often in the world of football.

Story is 2 months old now, but sounds like  Giresunspor can't sign any new players at the moment. Also they couldn't pay upfront all the cash they owe Joey C, and have agreed on a sort of payment plan. So sort of makes a bit more sense with that info that he returns there next season. But yeah still a bit weird.

Complicating factor?! Giresunspor in the drop zone (1 pt from safety) with 2 games left.

Giresunspor reached an agreement with Champness on their receivables
Thursday, April 06, 2023 13:03 - Last Updated Thursday, April 06, 2023 13:04   | Source : AA

Bitexen Giresunspor, one of the Spor Toto Super League teams, has reportedly reached an agreement regarding the receivables of New Zealand player Joseph William Champness.

In the written statement made by the club, it was stated that Giresunspor, which has a transfer ban for two terms, continues to work meticulously in line with the interests of the club.
In the statement, it was reported that club president Nahid Ramazan Yamak had a meeting with Joseph William Champness, who was in the squad in the 2021-2022 season and who unilaterally terminated his contract and left the team, citing his past receivables.

In the statement, it was stated that an agreement was reached with the player who applied to FIFA regarding his receivables, and it was noted that:

"Our President, Nahid Ramazan Yamak, invited the player to our country and held a meeting in Istanbul, and after the meeting, an agreement was reached on the payment plan regarding his file in FIFA, arising from his receivables from the 2021-2022 season.

The registration period transfer windows published by FIFA on March 31, 2023 and Taking into account the new changes that allow players without clubs to transfer outside of the transfer period, an application has been made to the TFF in order to benefit from the aforementioned player again for the next season, and necessary initiatives have been initiated.

We state that we expect a positive opinion from our federation in order to
re-employ our player from the 2023-2024 season, and we present our respects to the sports public."

Giresunspor (16th, 37 pts, -20 GD) had a 1-0 win, but unfortunately İstanbulspor (15th, 38 pts, -20 GD) also won.

Final round this Wednesday NZ time. Both teams host other sides with nothing to play (already relegated or safe)

16th spot is in the relegation zone, so reasonable odds Champness if he returns to Turkey it will be in the 2nd tier.

Giresunspor (40 pts) with a 2-0 win, but unfortunately İstanbulspor (41 pts) won as well so Giresunspor are relegated. Actually 4 teams ended up on 41 pts, just 1 point above them, so they were a bit unlucky.

But down they go to the Turkish 2nd tier, so that may stop any plan for Champness to return to them.

Happy he's back playing. With his pace and tricky feet, he has potential to offer a real point of difference to the AWs.

But from memory his decsion making is often questionable, aka Sotiro he 'lacks polish', and can frustrate. Like Talay with Jaushy you'd think he needs the right coach & club to ever really improve. Not sure he'll get that at a Turkish 2nd Division club, but hopefully it's just the start on fulfilling that potential.

Team is based in city of Adana, Southern Turkey - so in the region damaged by that large tragic quake in Feb this year. 454 people died in Adana.

Adanaspor ground share with local rivals Adana Demirspor who are in the Super Liga (top division).
