Yes all good points but I just think it is a bit weird to start a job and say so much about how you really love the ethos and values of the place when you clearly aren't planning on being there long. If it really seems so great, why such a short contract?

Why is he talking about values? Can’t talk about training facilities to explain why he wants more money than the Nix are offering him now, because the facilities in Welly are top class.

Thought our defence managed to contain him. a few nice moves from him though that would be good for New Zealand. Glad he didn't haunt us last night.

He attracted defenders and opened up space for others. Before he came on the Roar were absolutely dire they were state league at best. They were a different side the last 20, Phoenix had to scramble a fair bit and block some good chances. Love to see him back in a side with better players around him, he still has a lot to offer. But will keep ticking over at Roar.

People talking about facilities etc, Roar stadium on of the best in the world. Also maybe he didnt like Wellington and the weather. But his values, they may not be yours but he knows what he wants...fair play.

ps. ThePof ....i never said he was a "big boy" again youre making stuff up and believing your own lies. shhhh

When he left Wellington we had no facilities or reserve teams, etc, now we have (apparently) the best in the league. But, he also doesn't need facilities to develop anymore (only to rehab).

We don't know if the Phoenix were even in discussions with him, it could be we didn't feel we needed someone in that position and didn't even approach him. Victory fans are calling him a snake on social media, but likewise there is no indication that they were talking to him either.

Anyway, it was good to see him on the pitch and he looked hungry to make something happen.

I mean it sounds like the kind of place where fans might think so much of a youth player they’d fundraise to get him attention at the club.

Here’s what he he said:

“I chose this project because it was the one that resonated the most with how I was feeling and what I was thinking at this point in my career,” Rojas said.

“Having spoken to the club and people within the club, Zac & Kaz and further along the line the new coaching staff, i began to understand that this was a place that really resonated with my values and was a place that was determined to be more than just a football club.

“I’d done a bit of searching myself and I think that I’ve found a really good place to start playing again and to work through those values.

“I’m aware of a lot of their players, aware of their history and I think I really connected with the desire for the project and to come back to some of those days if possible.”

As someone said a really odd way to announce a 6 months temporary contract.
Is he talking about football values? Financial security? About the way Corey Brown was treated? Late payment of wages which was the norm at one point? Trying to pull a fast one with Brett Holman’s insurance claims? Not paying bills to the Logan council? Not paying NPL fees to Football Queensland?

Not meaning to be a prick, but he’s made such a big deal about it wanting to be ‘more than a football club’. Is it a kind of social enterprise or a non-profit entity? Is there a Queen St cricket club equivalent donating money for each occasion he laces up his boots?

I’d rather be at a football club that made a good go at being a football club, tbh.

Again, even though his family has been going through tough times, the way he talks here about a place he’s committed 6 months to is odd.

I hope he’s got friends in Brisbane he can drop in on when he needs support because it sounds like he’s still going through a bit of a mid-career crisis tbh.

Yeah, I was thinking some of those things. Also, if you want a club with a social conscious, you don't want to go to one owned by the Bakrie group who are big into coal, oil, palm oil production, deforestation, etc. and a few years ago accidentally destroyed a whole town. The Indonesian commission for human rights accused the Bakrie group of human rights violation.

But, maybe new management has moved the club on from it's past.

Man I'd love to say I was burnt out from playing 14 years of pro football.
If he had played 14 years in EFL 50 games a season I'd say fair enough.

I hope he gets back to his best and this little break helps him stay in top shape until the World Cup, we really do need players like him in the attacking third and there is no guarantee that he and the older Wood & Barbarouses stay at their best until then (though I must say it is looking so far so good for the latter two).

14 years away from NZ…several years getting splinters in Holland and Scandinavia…

14 years in front of appreciative home fans and a bit of success (which let’s face it, 3 or 4 cup competitions is designed to share around) might be less exhausting? And in the EFL you’re not far from home at most clubs. A few hours at most.

Lets face it these days we barely know Rojas, and what his priorities etc are. He left NZ almost half his lifetime ago, as a kid. Hasn't played in NZ with the AWs for over 6 years (Peru 2017)?  He's almost a stranger to us.

But yeah from afar seems he's got heavily involved with FIFPRO World Players' Union, and become a strong advocate for women's football, cue his donation to the VUC ALW team. He seems a bit of a sensitive soul.  Can never remember him getting a red card or involved in any on field altercation. Who are we to question his values, or needing a break from the game. That's his business.

And if he's developed strong interests off the pitch, that can coincide with less drive to actually don the boots. Ryan Nelsen was sitting in a QPR dressing room after a big EPL upset win over Chelsa, surrounded by estactic team mates, but feeling none of their joy. Basically retired on the spot. But he always had a transistion to business career in the US mapped (via that brief Toronto FC coaching gig). The lack of desire to train & play the game can come on unexpectedly quick for some.

It’s more a confusion that a club which is not an example of the best administration or player welfare in the league, let alone financial stability, is being mentioned as a shining example of values.

I don’t mind people having values, but if they’re being ascribed to someone, well what are they?

Vaguely related: what beer are they serving at Suncorp? Haven’t been in Brisbane since the mainstreaming of craft brews and I’m struggling to imagine what the land of XXXX is like.

Half the time these kinda statements are written up by the clubs & given to the players to okay for release. I wouldn't really take much stock in what is said in them.

So do plenty of the bigger names in the game, most of them have academies in their home countries for underprivelaged kids etc. Not saying he isnt doing his thing but it's hardly an achievement.

I'm not attacking Marco, got nothing against the guy, I'm not even bitter he never returned to the nix now that we are doing so well. I just found his comments genuinely mystifying and it seems others do too. No need to get defensive about it

Dude hasn’t played much. But did mention in a press release 4 times about his values, so clearly didn’t want anyone to talk about that. If you’ve got something more football related go for it, but complaining about chat isn’t exactly football either…

Great way to distract from your lack of football is to talk about other things. He looked good for the 20+ minutes he put in sure, but his reasons for being at Roar dont really stack up.

Next Saturday they’ve got City, also at Suncorp.

Will we see him playing a full half or starting?

Do we think he’s aiming at the AW game in March? Ahead of..?

Where’s his best position in Brisbane?
