Brest-Livotsk! I've heard of that place, it's where Soviet Russia signed a "please leave us alone" treaty with the German Reich. Trotsky apparently ignored the German generals when he arrived and handed out propaganda to the German soldiers telling them to mutiny (which they did a year later).

Sergei Pavlichuk I'm sure used to play for USSR. Must have played either in EURO 88 or World Cup in 1990, I remember the Pannini sticker albums for those two tournaments!

EDIT - turns out I was wrong on Pavlichuk, but Andrei Zigmantovich was in USSR squad for the 1990 World Cup.

This thread and the whole forum is depressingly lacking of any actual Nix content right now. Here is a season review for some Nix related light reading:

Starting 11:

Stefan Marinovic

I personally found the question marks over Stefan’s ability a bit baffling before the start of the season. Yeah he had a bad game that one time he played in the championship, but his quality was clear from his time with the national team. Kurto being an absolute legend the season before was a big part of this, but it’s probably not a stretch now to say Marinovic is the better keeper.

A-League keeper of the year: 9

Steven Taylor

Of the two CB’s, Taylor hasn’t quite had the same defensive impact of DeVere and this is reflected in his defensive stats. However he’s probably the best captain we’ve ever had, no disrespect to Dura but the visible respect that Taylor commands from the entire playing group is on another level. Possibly just an artefact from such a good season, but in any case Taylor's celebration with Marinovic for his assist ranks for me up there with the top Nix moments ever. Deserves to be in the discussion for all time Phoenix Legends.

Best captain ever: 8

Luke DeVere

It looked dire for DeVere when he was so easily skinned time and time again during the game against the Strikers. When looking at his injury history, the signing of DeVere looked to be a defensive disaster in the making. What a difference a season makes though, with DeVere being the defensive standout in what is a very good backline conceding only 1.15 goals per game (the second best season ever, after 09/10).

Most underrated signing of the season: 9

Liberato Cacace

Whatever superlatives I could write here on Cacace have already been repeated over and over again on the forum and in the media. The incredibly talented youngster has added being a genuine goal-threat to his game this season and that just completes the total package skillset that Cacace possesses. The most difficult player to replace in the squad if injured, suspended or ends up at a bigger club.

Best left back in the League: 9

Tim Payne

The best RB the Nix have had? The list isn’t very long, and when you include players such as Muscat and Fenton they are all converted rather than natural fullbacks. Recent transgressions aside, Payne has been consistent performer in what has always been a problem position. Can actually cross the ball accurately which is a revelation and you’d expect the assists to continue to pile up next season. Defensive positioning could do with a bit of work though, has somehow managed to only make 6 tackles the entire season.

Best Nix right fullback ever: 7.5

Matti Steinmann

One half of the best midfield duo in the competition? SFC’s Retre and Brattan probably get the accolade here in terms of results, but there is no denying the German’s effectiveness when it comes to the Nix’s new-found ability to retain possession in the midfield. Always looks so calm and composed on the ball, and despite having the tendency to randomly spray a pass to no-one once or twice a game, has a higher pass percentage completion than both the of the Sydney duo. There’s no stats to confirm this, but seems to win everything in the air too.

Please sign for another season or four: 8

Cameron Devlin

I’m sure that no one could say they could have foreseen the impact Devlin would have on the squad when he filled in for an injured Rufer. Looked early on to be a walking red card, but has shown a remarkable ability to make ridiculously risky tackles and actually come away with the ball. What is also remarkable is once he wins the ball, Devlin almost always finds a team-mate with an astonishing 90% passing accuracy, easily the best in the team and probably up there with the best the league. Only 21 and with the right coach (hopefully Talay), will just get better and better.

The Aussie N’Golo Kante (in the making): 9.5

Ulises Davila

Hyped up by Talay before his signing was announced as a player that could potentially be the best import the A-League has seen, by some recruitment miracle the one-time under-20 wonderkid has actually lived up to hype. I don’t understand how a player so clearly talented can fall through the cracks of the professional football world and end up at the Nix after playing less than 200 games in a 12 season career. Has no obvious weakness; two footed, assists and scores, good work-rate, solid defensive stats, can score penalties and seems to like Wellington. Another Nix legend in the making.

Best import ever (not quite, but close): 10

David Ball

There’s a post somewhere on the forum where I predict that Ball will be a Nix legend by the end of the season. I think it was in response to the shark he was getting after missing two penalties in the FFA cup. He isn’t a legend yet, but the stunning individual goal against the Victory makes me think he will be by the end of the next. He’s been what the Nix has been missing since Greenacre retired, a hardworking attacking fulcrum that may not score a lot of goals, but is still dangerous enough that the opposition can’t take them lightly and has the ability to bring teammates into the game by making intelligent runs into space. Could always score more goals though.

Phoenix legend in the making: 8

Rene Piscopo

As I always get asked during Football Manager media sessions “does the fee paid for a player dictate the level of performance expected?”. My answer is always a calm no, but there is a good argument that in the real-world large transfer fees do come with high expectations. And has the Nix record signing met the lofty expectations of his reported $100,000 transfer fee…? Yes and no. Clearly a talented player with loads of potential, has a tendency to lose the ball too often in the final third and needs to be a bigger threat on the goal. Still our best option in the wide left position and should improve dramatically with more game time.

Not quite meeting record signing expectations: 7

Gary Hooper

Has there ever been more hype around the signing of a Nix player than star striker and Marquee man Hooper? Signed on at a time when the Nix season looked like it needed saving, Hooper was supposed to be the saviour, but a frustrating run of injuries limited his game time early in the season and he never quite reached the heights expected of him. Or did he? A goal contribution every 83 minutes compares favourably with the 80 minutes of Jamie Maclaren and his understanding with David Ball was becoming telepathic. It’s a shame that his wage demands will mean we will probably never find out how good he could actually be in the A-League.

Not quite the messiah: 7.5

Subs with enough game time to note:

Jaushua Sotiro

The closest we have to a designated scapegoat this season. Is the only player in the team with actual pace but early on in the season had no idea how to use it. Recent games has shown he actually can finish and remains a solid option off the bench – 6.5

Alex Rufer

Getting injured was the best thing Rufer has done this year. Harsh, and completely untrue. While he was struggling to continue the impressive increase in form and ability from the prior season, Rufer has been good off the bench in recent games. Will continue to be an important player for the Nix in seasons to come, whether in the starting 11 or not – 6.5

Callum McCowatt

For me, the biggest disappointment of the season was McCowatt not performing anywhere close to his potential. Whether he has the talent to make it in the A-League is still to be seen, but has time on his side – 5

Ben Waine

Loads of potential and looks lively when coming on late in games. Needs more game time to improve. – 5

Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi

Shows a lot of composure and ability to play at the A-League level when given time on the field but hasn’t had much of a chance due to the inexplicable inability of the incumbent CB’s to get injured or suspended – 5.5

Agree with most of that, good summary.  Except, Muscat was a natural right back, and is still our best ever in that position IMO.  I like Payne but, as you note, his positioning and decision-making does give away that he's not entirely comfortable at RB (yet).

Rufer

It's a shame they were all so rudely interrupted. To my mind this was the best Nix team we've ever seen and to have the season ripped away like that is heart breaking. If the club and the league manage to stay afloat through this disaster I'm afraid it will be a very different looking squad when we finally get back on the park.

Very good player summary by the way. And I'm also a big Rufer fan. Different type of mid to Devlin but still an excellent player, and home grown too.

Well there was one 10 and one 9.5 and given that the team would probably be second on the ladder if we had played the same number of games as those in the table around us, I don't think these ratings are a stretch for our best players.

Cant agree at all isn't 10 a perfect performance as much as love how Davila has played no way could you say he was 10 in all games and even in his best games he wasn't perfect.Think the highest could be a 9 but don't see a 9.5 or a 10 when more than one game is involved.

My other team, Dundee, released a statement noting they have business interruption insurance which covers Notifiable Diseases and gets them reimbursement from losses due to cancellation of matches. Even plan to partially reimburse season ticket holders from that.

Not sure how many clubs are covered by such a thing, doesn't seem many around here are?

It has been hinted the NZ insurance companies have an out from when WHO announced it as a world wide pandemic. How true, I do not know

Not specific to the above but specific to some of the current reporting re. Australia.

This story appears today (5 April):

Yet some of the same pictures were used on 20 March in several other publications. Eg

If someone ever questions "the media" the default position is throw them in the "conspiracy theory, denier, disinformation" bin

Simply highlighting that disinformation, lazy reporting, whatever you call it occurs. From whatever angle someone wants to portray.
