While this article does not bring anything new to the table, it does leave McKavanagh with a little egg on his face.

When you consider the $500k cost that was stated to host the OFC Nationas in NZ and the reason why it did not bid plus the $616k operating loss (disguised as a $200k profit) from last year, we would be $200k better off with the cash from Brazil. We would have also acquired 3 international games we would not have had to pay for (and now have to seek replacement football at our cost in the lead up for Brazil if we qualify) and the cost of sending our team to Honiara vs possible contra deals staying here. From a financial point of view, it really is a no brainer which ever way you slice it.

I think we are asking for the wrong head and should be pointing it at McKavanagh and not Herbert. I can live with 1 poor result in 8 years because it does happen to any team. To make such a rookie mistake in your first year though...

I'm not sure about your analysis there Jeff because I think the $1.3m for the Confeds Cup would have had to pay for the entire cost of our participation there, including the need to jack up a couple of friendlies in preparation.

Yes, we lose $1.3m in revenue from not competing in the Confeds Cup but we probably also avoid many hundreds of thousands of dollars of costs also (might be wrong on this, happy to be corrected).

Not that I think that's a good thing. Just saying that I think the financial impact on NZF is not as serious as "we lost $1.3m".

FIFA pick up the ticket for the confeds because its a FIFA tournament. We might have needed a couple of friendlies along the way to the Confeds but if you are going to Brazil, you possibly arrange a couple of games in Central or South America along the way mitigating the cost. Also, if you look at the Texas friendlies, the cost to us is minimal as the home team picks up the tab. Hence why the games were in Texas because they were more likely to get a bigger crowd that will pay a full wack than in their home country because of the larger hispanic base with cash - its the same reason why Mexico play their friendlies in the USA. Also as has been stated in the past, NZ doesn't have many home friendlies because we pick up the away teams costs, at business class travel as well. Its financially better for us to play away because we simply will not get the paying crowd numbers to support games at home. If we could guarantee a crowd of 30k at each home game, we would be having a lot more home games as they pay for themselves and generate a profit.

I didn't look at it as revenue because as NZF said, they don't bank on it but again they are at a deficit based on no cash coming in and now no free games and if we want them, we have to pay to have them or play away vs hosting (at a cost of $500k) some free games and $800k over and above that once you get a payout from Brazil.

[quote=Jeff Vader]

Its inherently obvious that Killen is not the answer and all the Brown haters must now be wishing he was still around.

so you are saying we would have progressed to the final if the invinsible man had been playing at DM?

I will answer your question by asking you how awesome has Killen been in that role? You might call the Brown the invisible man, but at least he wasn't 'embarrassingly out of position' man. Herbert can shoulder some of the blame for that.

Ricki should be sacked from AWs coach. If he doesnt get us to the next WC he almost certainly will be. Coaches have been sacked for less. Managing two teams is too much

If you are referring to Clapham and Payne - I have been quite surprised with Clapham and I will raise my hand and say I was one who was a knocker. I'll eat humble pie and admit that. Does he command a starting position? Not sure but he does deserve a hell of a lot more consideration in the midfield than he has previously and perhaps has raised two fingers at Ricki and shown him he deserves a Phoenix gig as well. If Mullligan was the preferred choice, he has well and truly been leapt frogged by Clapham. I thought Clapham was effective and very much came away with a tick beside his name from this tournament

Payne, I'm 50-50 based on what I have seen. The 1st game against the Solomons, I thought he did a lot of running but not much else. I'd like to see him in 'regular' conditions and see how he goes. I do think.

One thing I noticed is quite a few of todays team are young and came through the NZFC. I guess that shows there is a pathway still.

The thing that annoys me most about this result is that All Whites become somewhat of a joke in the eyes of the NZ media. Results like we have achived in this tournament are not going to do much in helping NZ Football.

'Smeltz only 1 goal behind Brian Turner as the leading NZ goalscorer'

False. Vaughan Coveny has more

Pretty much...Why can't the media like us? I guess it all goes back to needing to play attractive football. Can't really be expected to play like Barcelona (Like someone said in another thread) but surely with the skill of players we have currently, we can play better football. I think Ricki has done superbly to get us where he has, BUT I think we need another coach or tactic to get us further.

My take on why the media don't like us is that there is a perception in NZ that football is un-New Zealand and that subconsciously at least fans of other sports are threatened by the global reach of football so they enjoy it when NZ football does badly. I heard a tale once about Hamish MacKay telling a football fan that it would never be bigger than rugby and that no one in NZ cares, or words to that effect. Dunno if it was true at all but it wouldn't surprise me!

NZ is a tiny market and if football gets a higher profile it will be at the expense of rugby, and not only do a lot of NZ sports journalists love rugby but there is a lot of broadcasting and sponsorship money tied up in it. This doesn't necessarily mean that these editorial decisions are conscious but if sports journalists and editors have these attitudes it would affect how they report football stories, especially ones related to NZ teams.
