We'd have to base ourselves in Europe to get any games. And don't think we'd be sought after opposition for teams that have qualified for the World Cup, but could pick up games against the mid to lower ranking European sides.

It's surprising, but World Cup finalists are often looking for opponents on the eve of the Finals and will play smaller countries.
After all, we played Brazil in their last warm-up before the 2006 World Cup in Geneva.
They were preparing for their group game against Australia.
So let's see who's drawn in Australia's group in a few hours from now...
I knew Clem Khaiseb from Namibia who was one of the leading strikers in our national league in the mid-1990's for Christchurch (his 100 m. sprint time was a world-class 10 seconds - a World Student Games athlete for Namibia). He was studying at Lincoln.
His form here earned him a call-up to the Namibian national team where he played in games for a couple of years.
He was part of the Namibian team which Saudi Arabia contracted to act as their warm-up opponents in camp in France on the eve of the 1998 Finals. They played the Saudis in about three games behind closed doors. A weaker African football country.
Sometimes you just have to be available and strike it lucky....
Many countries (including England) are basing themselves in North America on the eve of the Finals - so it might be possible to get games there.

Friendly to be announced tomorrow at 7pm

Hmm guess the 'No's' (me included) were wrong. I wonder whom it might be. Guessing something in March or May (Australia?)

Chile maybe? They might want us as prep for Aussie.

So they can organise a meaningless friendly months in advance but find opponents before a WC qualifier?

Anyone else see the irony in this?

Difference here is that the other nations will be actively looking for teams to play against. Whereas nations wouldn't really mind if they played a game in September this year or not, not as much of a big deal as the few months leading into Brazil.

I would think it is a case of a country asking us for a game this time, rather than us having to ask.

Would love Scotland in NZ but that isn't gonna happen.

Oh I totally get exactly how this has played out but here is how NZF should handle this:

"Sure, we can do that to help you out but when we come back at you sometime in the future for a fixture we need, you have our back'

The answer would be "Piss off, we can find friendies anywhere we want to, why would we back ourselves into a corner like that"

Would be stoked as hell to get Australia. Doubt it though. Australia have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

I hope its actually in a window like March. Worry likes of Reid Smith or Wood would rather rest

I'm sure NZ football said a little while back that they wouldn't organize friendlies in May in the future. They didnt want to piss of the Reid's of this world and interrupt their holiday.

Based on the red background, I'm going with China.

+1 in march

Turns out it isn't China, Chile or Scotland. Def an away game.

My next guesses are Paraguay or Serbia. History with both. Paraguay have nothing locked in next year, and Serbia still have one spot free in March (they are playing away to Ireland)

Croatia maybe, play in Red and in Mexico's group so they can compare how they perform against NZ vs Mexico..

That is a bit of a shame then. Seems a bit strange to gave us 24 hrs advanced notice for an away game.

Which is why I'd assume it's a decent team. Reminds me of the Highlanders 'high profile announcement' fail which was Tony Brown joining as assistant coach.

WTF?

A huge PR campaign , getting people excited for a MAJOR annoucement of a international friendly and its

only fuckin japan, I dont care if they're the number team in asia. If they had of just announced this, it wouldve

been okay, but to go all big on it, and then just say  "Japan"   well fuck me.

Well... at least we know that we should have some kind of coach (could be a caretaker I guess) by March.

Quality game for us. If only we had it a couple of months ago!

Likely a reschedule from the cancelled match in 2011. Good fixture.

Really?  'Only' Japan?  This is a fantastic announcement - really happy with this and more than I was expecting.  2B is right I think - reschedule of the post Tsunami game that was called off.

Edit: And great that they can hopefully promote it well and get good coverage with the women playing after.
