Yeah though there is a bit more leeway with this in nz due to our shallow talent pool.
As an extreme example imagine if chris wood or winston Reid hadn't been playing for a few months, we'd still pick them as he would still be significantly better than the next best option.

The major difference is that Leo is getting old and his career is pretty much over. Why on earth would any sensible coach select Leo to play in this friendly? Another major difference is that Chris Wood and Winston Reid are both much younger and much better players than Leo Bertos. You can't compare the two groups.
EDIT: Just to add, as much as I like Leo Bertos, even though our talent pool is small, in my opinion he is definitely not our next best option.
