Accommodation in PNG isn't particularly cheap - probably about the same sort of price as the equivalent accommodation in Aus, if not more expensive. Plus I'd say that logistically Australia is just easier - less transferring flights, more options for accommodation and facilities, no visas required for NZ citizens, and yes, closer in climate than Auckland would be.
