Should just ask Wood, Reid and Thomas what they think.
On the player side of things with McCowatt, Garbett and Sarpreet playing in Europe we have the emergence of some depth in our 10s, alongside Joe Bell or Thomas play making from a little deeper. Our wide players with Just, Kosta, Rojas, Cacace, Champness, Elliot, Sutton and McGarry definitely can chip in.
It’s a very exciting time.
Only thing is we’re missing is an obvious back up for Chris Wood. That World Cup team had Wood benched with Smeltz, Fallon and Killen. Four quality goal scorers. Stunning depth really.
But in terms of our ability to keep the ball and make play this has to be a bit of a golden age. We just need everyone to stay fit and for Kosta, McCowatt and Sarpreet to chip in regularly.
With the level of service, perhaps even a striker playing at a lower level, but with a bit of experience like Watto or similar might be able to fill their boots.
Who am I missing?
Oh, right Ben Waine! Hope he can go up a gear this season. Don’t feel like he understudies Wood just yet though. Needs a couple of seasons of consistent returns under his belt and a decent move hopefully.
How far off the pace are guys like Rogerson and Stevens? And Mata? And Old could have a break out season. Fenton might be second choice, but did play a lot of professional football last season and should have been awarded the pen to take the Nix to finals footie.
I think it’s fairly obvious that we’re a relatively inclusive and diverse football team and country. I can’t speak for everyone’s experiences, but the All Whites name has some proud history of its own now separate from any ABs derivation. Can’t really get behind the Black Caps name- it’s new squeaky and feels a bit forced. It’s an example of how top down, marketing created names are a bit hollow. The All Whites though is okay with me. Can also be New Zealand or the New Zealand football team. Just get us playing some games once things open up a bit yeh??
