However, if we were to leave the OFC confederation I'd prefer to
join the South American Confederation, playing Uruguay, Brazil,
Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Columbia, Peru etc. These are far
better sides to be playing and the more we play them the more we
can develop an entertaining style of play and player.
That might be cool, but there is no way CONMEBOL would allow
it, considering how there are three countries (the guyanas) that
are geographically IN south america but playing as members of
CONCACAF. CONMEBOL loves the idea of being the only confederation
in which any country can plausibly qualify for a world cup, and
only one hasn't to date. They're not about to start admitting new
members.
I do however have a wild crazy idea for the OFC to gain some
oomph though. Consider how the AFC has nearly 60 member nations,
most of which are quite weak. If the OFC were to "steal" some
weaker AFC members that are geographically close to oceania, such
as Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and the Phillipines,
then the confederation would get a nice boost just by increasing
its size. Also, this would be the kind of thing that would grab a
little much-needed publicity for the OFC. Think of the headlines.
"The Little Confederation that Could: OFC Announces Free-Agent
Signings". It would be a media darling.
But how would the OFC pull off such a daring move? Well,
it's been mentioned in this thread already - relatively easy world
cup qualification routes. Two of the afforementioned nations
(Phillipines and Brunei) didn't even enter world cup qualifying
this time around because asia is simply above their heads, so they
don't even bother to try. But with a smaller, less powerful route,
they just might be inclined to try, and push the OFC to a slightly
higher level. It may not be much but it will be a start and it will
surely get FIFA's attention, and will definitely give them some
more leverage towards an easier qualifying route (as opposed
to the current oceania/south america playoff). Before you know it,
Australia will want back in. Then we'll really have
something.
Well, a man can dream.
