That was a freak goal. But I remember that for half that tournament we played 4 at the back and looked like Des' u20s. For the other half of that tournament we played a back 5 and looked like Bazeley's All Whites. Simply subtract a CB, will be far less tempting for us to pass it back and forth across our back 3, especially if there is another option in central areas. When Singh and Thomas are back fit we don't want to be leaving out a player like either of them, or Joe Bell, because we can't have three central midfielders because we NEED to play Sligo's Pijnaker or Mr Average Tim Payne. I was actually very happy when Tommy got sent off, there is a chance it reminded Darren that it is actually possible to only play a pair of centre backs
If we are being realistic, it is very unlikely Thomas is coming back and playing regularly over the next 3 years due to the type of injuries he has had and if he does come back what level is he going to be at but fingers crossed. What concerns me is, I don't know why we plan to head in to a 2026 World Cup with a 34 year old Wood, 36 Year old Smith, 36 Year old Barbarouses, a 34 year old Rojas, 32 year old Payne and even Thomas would be a few months short of 32 at the next tournament. Do we want to see these guys chasing Mbappe in his prime around the field? I mean Smith would not have even had time to trip Mbappe up if the same situation occurred vs France and that is if we played them right now, let alone in 3 years.
