I gotta agree with this. I think where we miss out the most as fans both now and the old path is regular competitive and meaningful games in the international windows. Waiting 4 years for the couple of games that actually matter and we’re paying $1.03 to win
Yeah I appreciate we will get the big windfall every 4 years but don’t think that’s how we are really going to develop. InsulinMachine
I don't know but I just can't get excited about playing island teams sorry. Even if it results in direct WC qualification. Bring back team like Bahrain, Mexico and Peru. Or even better get into Asia
I'm genuinely confident that we could qualify (nearly) every WC through Asia as we kind of did in '82 and '10.
I'm sure there would be a lot more interest in us vs. Australia/Iran/Japan/Korea then a final vs. New Caledonia or Tahiti.
Hard disagree. You underestimate the quality in AFC. Beyond the top sides of Aus/Japan/South Korea/Iran/Saudi there is serious depth and it's only improving. A lot of travel especially to difficult middle eastern climates. A lot of teams well versed in sharkhousery and stifling the opponent.
I'm not saying we couldn't do it, I mean looking at the 18 sides playing in the last AFC round I'd say we'd be about in the middle quality-wise so in with a shot, but to say we'd make it nearly every time is just nonsense.
2022 case in point - we were playing well and had a strong squad for our own standards, and even still we lost those friendly games vs Aus (who missed top 4 of AFC and only qualified through the playoffs) home and away.
with 8.5 spots for Asia, I'm quite confident we could do it most of the time. Under the old 4 team system, highly unlikely.
I follow Iran as my family is half Persian and have probably watched more middle eastern fixtures then most here and and for all the BS sharkhousery that goes on, have confidence in us getting results. You just have to look at '82, '09 and '23 for proof of that. It would be ugly but we can do it.
