Can't believe Martin suggested their only blemish in the past four years was the eligibility saga and they inherited it. Think Alex Jones say say something else.

Martin also deflected questions about his future.

"It's an obvious question, said Martin. "But this is an isolated incident over a four year period where we have performed very well."

Needless to say Riccardo ignored this advice and no longer receives any work from NZ Football.

I'm intrigued as to why we think this isn't OK? No commercial employer would accept an ad-hoc contractor speaking badly about them. It's unsurprising that they cut ties. However I also think Ball made the right decision, if he's hosting a radio show he needs to be able to critique them and getting paid to MC big matches is a conflict of interest.

NZ Football would have known that Riccardo was a radio host  with strong opinons about Football and they still hired him.

Just another NZ Football cock up.

Yeah but he wasn't far off with the Peru rivalism.

AWs charter flight very suspiciously diverted to Santiago, Peruvian air Force jets flying low over their hotel, AWs fans at the game having a bag of urine thrown at them etc. Peruvian fans have not been apologising to Marto in Russia for nuthfink.

Martin just delivered the message in a very clumsy/awkward way.

I'd call the failure by NZF (perceived or otherwise) to fully support the Nix, as a far greater problem. Alex Jones cockup being part of that. Admittedly relationship seems to have improved of late.

Yeah but how much of that would have happened had he just kept his mouth shut. I remember seeing something saying that the low flying jets were in direct response to his comments

There was also the silly directives like not allowing the Peru fans to take drums into the game in Wellington cause they might make too much noise! Showed that he really has no understanding of football or fans culture.

Who did that happen to? I don't remember it at all, in general all the fans at the stadium and around it were very friendly.

And the jet flyover happened at 2.30-3pm, not early in the morning like reported in NZ media. Apparently it disturbed Hudson's afternoon nap by the pool, I'm sure he's still suffering from PTSD following such an inhumane act.

Sounds to me like someone has their story confused there. I heard nothing of the sort either. Perhaps thinking of anecdotes from the Azteca (VS US) when NZ where headed there?

The flyover was well publicised in the local papers etc. It wasn't a surprise to anyone in Lima.

I think the other notable thing was the group that set of the fireworks outside the hotel. In their youtube video about it they stated it was directly in response to Martin's comment about how he wanted Kiwis to treat the Peruvians in Wellington. Those comments were widely reported in Peru and were precisely what sparked the reaction.

Laser pointers etc bad for sure and probably well worth apologising for but the fans we saw all day were nothing short of friendly.

If we do get rid of Handy Andy, how many NZers could step into that role and do a significantly better job?

I'd love to see a really top sports administrator, like Martin Sneddon, take over, even if he didn't bring much footballing knowledge to the table. He's a smart operator, a proud Kiwi, and even if we did have to pay a premium to get him, it could be worth it.

I think there would be many many good people that could perform this role. Not sure of the salary involved but you need to pay good money to get the best.

Found it (not that I've been avoiding work) in the match thread there is this from someone called Amac

the flipside of the incredible passion of the Peruvians for their team is that there is a fine line between positive support and unacceptable behaviour. While, as I said, most of their fans were really good, a couple of us Kiwis got hit with a flying bag of urine lobbed from the stand behind us during the match. The weird thing was, it happened after the second Peruvian goal, so we were already effectively out of the match; also, the liquid was cold, so presumably some hombre had been carrying round a bag of piss under his coat for 70 minutes...

Its in a long post and is the only real negative thing in the whole thing.

Pretty much all the NZ fans - about 30 in total, were in the same area. Now, it's possible that there were some outside of that, but wouldn't be too many I'd think.

Well Amac obviously hasn’t just jumped on YF to add a colourful work of fiction.

There were a few of us outside the White Noise crowd. I was about 10 rows back, then about 30 seats to my right were some other Kiwis. At least one of them was an expat living in Argentina I know. I think it was this group that coped the bag of Peruvian urine. There seemed to be a kerfuffle over that way at some point, and our row was almost directly below the stand above. Blame it on Andy Martin.

But yes overall the local fans were fantastic hosts.

Greg Peters would have been a good pick up but he's just gone to Rugby League. Neil Sorenson has just left NZ Rugby after a very successful stint there, surely he'd be a good get?

I've run in to American, Canadian and Mexican fans here in Russia who have also said similar happened to them and their national team.  Martin just gave them a convenient cover for what they were always going to do.  Many Aussie fans I met at the Straya Denmark game said the exact same thing about Uruguayan fans in Uruguay.
