Unusually for a pro footballer, Fred combined contract computer programming work with playing for Fortuna Sittard in the Dutch top flight for three seasons (53 appearances, 6 goals)  and a season in the Second Div. 1990- 1994. Says he needed the mental stimulation he wasn't getting just from playing. Always one of the smarter footballers around...
