Gourdie reckons it's an announcement regarding sponsorship.  The world waits......

Maybe it's sponsorship of the otherwise incredibly poorly named...

If they create a trophy for it will all the rugby head stop complaining about it being a friendly.

NZRU have bought them out.
Plus another couple of unrelated announcements.
- The shape of the ball is changing
- you may now use your hands
- back to ancient offside rules whereby you cant pass forward.

What was the announcement?

Time to change banks then.

Or they could think of it as "if we can get a multimillion dollar deal for the chatham cup imagine what we could get for the NZFC...billions"

Its great news. Though yeah would also like an NZFC sponsor.

I agree with Tegal. I think that this kind of sponsorship deal for our national grassroots cup competition is excellent news. I'm sure sponsorship for the NZFC will follow in time, but for now NZF are just getting their house in order, which is great to see.

Three for me, and two for them.

Hopefully this can fund a few teams to travel more in the opening rounds.

I read on some provincial paper that the NZFC is being rebranded again as "The National League". If that's happening, perhaps a sponsorship agreement will be announced then.

Had heard this as well, big dust ups continue about amateur status and how some sides will function this coming season though.

Just been announced. NZFC being rebranded as the "ASB Premiership" as part of the big sponsorship package.

Hopefully the deal might include some TV coverage of later rounds of Chatham Cup to help ASB's exposure. (To much to hope for?)

Good news though.

Even more interesting...

"New Zealand Football has also been working to establish the new ASB Phoenix Challenge, where the eight ASB Premiership clubs will enter into a competition with a Phoenix reserve team".

So does that mean actual competition for the nix reserves rather than just mid-week friendlies? If so that's great news.

I'm guessing it's a fancy name for midweek friendlies. Though I strongly hope we don't play midweek.

i also get the impression that AWs sponsorship is still up for grabs. That is probably of most value to somebody with an international market.

This.

Almost certainly not this.

They'll play midwweek so long term bench players for the firsts can get some gametime.

Fair call, but I wonder if that could be dealt with by staggering matches. For example - when the seniors play Friday, reserves could play on Saturday or Sunday (although travel would be an issue, esp from Perth etc). I feel that matches against Nix reserves would be a pretty damn good marketing tool for all parties involved, and that might be wasted midweek. The Nix have trouble getting people to come on a Wednesday, what luck would YoungHeart have?

That being said, the most important thing is getting match time for the benchers, so midweek would be fine in that respect.

I am going to assume that the name "Challenge" signifies: "Any ASB-Prem team that beats the Nix reserves gets a VALUABLE PRIZE!" (Most probably a few cases of beer and a signed photo of the guy who played Goldstein in the ads.)Doloras2010-09-02 16:57:12

No way. I was sceptical until they used the word "Challenge". Now I'm expecting some awesome Fear Factor style contest to the death.

This is great news. Saw on CGW that it was the largest sports sponsorship agreement ASB has. Good to see football is really being taken seriously. Brilliant to see some of that sponsorship go the way of the NZFC, really lends more credibility to it. Now just some television coverage!
