Venus Shield is the trophy for the Wellington Division 1 - perhaps the oldest club trophy in NZ . Still exists but is competed for in the Capital Premier League ( now a lot of clubs second teams)Games used to feature Miramar , Diamonds, Seatoun, Waterside, Western Suburbs, Northern , Railways (Lower Hutt City) , Hungaria and others. This was in the days prior to Central League starting in 1968. In those days there also used to be a full radio commentary (Gordon Whyte and Trevor Rigby) of the 12.40 pm game on the Basin Reserve no 2 and then a recorded 2nd half commentary of the 2.30 pm main game - this used to play after the main rugby game at Athletic Park . Very different days
The Venus Shield is old - it was donated in 1896 (the Wellington league had been running since 1891)by the Cameron brothers of the New Venus & Queens Tobacco company
It's not the oldest though that goes to Auckland's Thompson Shield which was first presented in 1892 and is awarded these days to the winners of Northern League Division 1

Think these days its called the toilet seat. Joke. Was a provincial comp. Lost relevance when clubs became all powerful.
