I think that was quite a good reality czech this morning, since the lads are going to come up against dodgy refs, players intent on simulating, wicked free kicks and set pieces. And yet they showed enough to still keep expectations ticking along that they can get some change out of defences at the WC.

I didn't want to think about it but in all honesty I'm happier with a loss today than the prospect of the media hyping us up and then a massive revolt by new All White supporters when they fail to take any points away in South Africa.

Now we can be the quintessential underdog and fingers crossed "over-deliver".

Let's go lads!

My expectations haven't changed after today. Call me delusional, but I thought we were definitely Slovenia's equal and only some dodgy calls and a Paston shocker were the difference. Our passing could be better, as could our finishing, but I think we are in fine form coming up to the World Cup.

Got what I asked for - good playing, not embarrassed but didn't win...  Stand by thatt original comment - reality check for the casual fan too!  And some of us.

Have to disagree with you footpaul - their passing and midfield play was reasonable, ours was virtually non-existant.  Our formation means we have too many at the back (defending as 5-4-1), and can't break effectively after winning posession.  We'd do well to have a striker who can take those free kicks too - world class, they were.

But hell, still hoping!

I bet we dont have a single player who just sits in front of a goal with a bunch of balls practising free kicks hour after hour, week in week out, like other nations do.

Question would be - why don't we?

Brilliant idea! That's how Mulligan could force his way into the squad.

Completely agree and that is where my expectations lie. 3 respectable losses (2 goals or less) and i'll be happy. A draw (against Slovakia seems most likely) and i'll be ecstatic.

I thought we played well.

Still think if we can a  get point against Slovakia from our three matches, this world cup will be a huge success.

North Korea are adamant they are going to win, in fact they have probably already recorded the final!

I would be really pleased if the AW's do as well as North Korea did in 1966 - they were the real giant killers that year and got a lot of support as being the underdogs and played good, attacking football.

I'm going to go bold and say AW's will make top 8. Hell its been done before when cameroon came on to the scene. Anything can happen.

Instead of saying that we are going to win the final 5-3 on pens, I'm going to say that we will lose all 3 pool matches so that instead of taking 6 months sick leave for depression I can take 1 months annual leave for CELEBRATIONZ

Actually that only made sense in my head.ahmad2010-06-06 11:06:15

I agree.

I have slim expectations. I hope we'll be competitive but am not expecting the wins to come.

I think the problem with NZers who are not normally football fans will be thinking we can get out of our group because Paraguay, Slovakia are not countries they know much about. Therefore have decided we can beat them.

A win would be outstanding, but I am not expecting it

A draw would be wonderful, our best result in the highest competition, and I think if Pasty is on, the defense are careful, and there is a bit of luck in the forwards (Smeltz to finish one) then we could do it.  Believing it is more possible now then ever

3 losses is most likely, hope we dont get dumped on.

This may come across slightly negative, but it's a realistic set of objectives:
1. No major tonkings (5+ goals against)
2. At least two of the games we finish no worse than 2 goals down (remember, we lost by 3, 3 & 4 at our last world cup appearance)
3. At least 2 goals scored
4. A point.

Anything more is a bonus and will be treated with unrestrained delirium. (as will any goals / points!)

Ultimately, we want to walk away from the competition and say "we deserved to be there".

I know, I know, its serious!

I'll be really disappointed if we lose to Slovakia, and from there we have to be really competitive and chase goals against Italy and Paraguay, and not let them cut us up too much. If we do this through ugly, raging defence and route 1 I don't care, but the players know their strengths and hopefully how to use them.
You know we belong together...

I think you've laid out the par score pretty damn accurately TBQH.

I would love a score draw vs Slovakia. It gives us a great launching pad for the next 2 games( ie 0-0 vs Italy) ...
I have a feeling this will be a very close group, with maybe Paraguay to top the group. Hopefully Paraguay win their first 2 games and play their "b" against us and we have at least 2 points going into the last round 1 match. My god that would be exciting going into the last round 1 game. Of course this is just speculation........... kiwiMalaysia422010-06-06 17:08:27

Yeah, My view and i think many others have changed because of these results. We weren't expecting them but now we are capable to rough it out so to speak and earn a point or two.

I have the same mindset as Billy Harris, I would be happy if we play good football and have three close losses.

I would be over the moon, if we can get a draw.

I just think its crazy talk that people are saying we can get out of our group or even get a win.
