Rule of thumb seems to be that host covers ‘internal costs’ only ie accommodation when you get there etc. But the travel cost will always be on NZF, whether we play at home or away. Likely assembling the team in Europe cheaper than getting them home.

The host nation typically picks up internal costs in return for the gate while the visitors get a match fee which, in New Zealand's case, can be anywhere between US$50,000 and US$200,000.

And an interesting yarn on the costs on the AWs early WC qualifying campaigns 1970-1982. In 1970 we had so little money we agreed to play Israel twice in Israel (rather than H&A) to save costs.
