It's not an ideal hiatus for the Ferns. But they can have few complaints when you look at say the last 15 odd years overall.
Chris Wood - AWs debut 2009. 82 caps to date
Ali Riley - Ferns debut 2007. 163 caps to date
Note the above numbers are taken from Wiki, so may not be exact. But there are 10 caps centurions for the Ferns, and still none for the AWs.
Sure the Ferns qualify for every Olympics and World Cup which means they automatically play more often than the men. And Wood has missed games due to injury, plus 2016 (left part way through) & 2024 OFC Nations Cups.
But the Ferns have on average, had a very generous playing programme in comparison to their male counterparts. There were some years in the eras of Hudson, Schmid & Hay when the All Whites barely played a game.
Hopefully it is just a temporary thing for the FFs, and all our international teams can have full programmes going forward. Especially with FIFA's generous payouts for WC qualification (both mens & womens)
