on the front page was a story from the Nelson Weekly about Alex Ridsdale making the New Zealand U-17 squad for World Cup qualifying. I can't find the rest of the squad anywhere though?

2 will get cut obviously.

Three for me, and two for them.

How come Mitch Cooper(Gold Coast United) and Izaak Hart(Happoel Tel Aviv) both born in 1994 are not in that list? Does the national coach know their existence?

Maybe they aren't any good.

Three for me, and two for them.

Or maybe they didn't want to/couldn't move to Auckland to train with the team four days a week. Surely New Zealand coaches would know which players are available to play for us.Luis Garcia2010-10-29 17:26:08

Perhaps they turned NZ down. Cooper is eligible for Vanuatu and I think I remember hearing earlier that Hart has Israeli citizenship. Could be that neither want to play for NZ?

Both of them should be sounded out to see if they are keen. Especially Cooper, youngest ever player to get a youth contract with a A - League team.... must have peotential.

It is quite possible the coaches have never hear of these players expecially if they left New Zealand a few years ago, or perhaps have never lived here and a kiwis by decent.

Either way give them a call, the chance to play at a youth world cup in front of numerous scouts would appeal to anyone, especially if they are not in the frame to make Austrlia / Israel u17's

Quote from Steve Cain - The hard part is whittling this group down to 20 because there are a lot of players who are of very similar ability and we have to look at all those little things that differentiate one player from another and quite often its personality, how they conduct themselves and they mentality with which they approach things.
Looking at Steve Cain's last campaign, "What do 95% of all the players chosen have in commin?".
Answer  - They were either out injured for a month or two, could not make it to training or were out of the country. Advice - Dont go to every game and every training if you want to be chosen.

Theyll be players who miss out that talent-wise are good enough to be there but it can come down to the balance of positions.

It can also come down to as a parent how far your c#*K is up his arse or how English you really are?

Sounds like someone had a negative experience.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I heard that all Cain is worried about is his CV looking good, and that he can't coach to save himself.

Lol. Will not comment on his coaching ability because of privacy issues but you have to be thankful he is a Mathematics teacher at Kelston boys, not an English teacher because if you read a lot of his articles, the Englishmen spelling leaves a lot to be about!

Um wouldn't getting good results make his CV look good?

I'm guessing that must have been a match fixing allegation from gaffa_hb...

Interesting.

You won't comment on his coaching ability because of "privacy issues" but you're happy to comment on the fact that he selects players whose cock he has in his bottom.

Surely cock-in-bottom-ness is more private?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Yes. Some terrible omissions.

Link? names?

No link. I have heard the squad from people i know (people who were overlooked). All i'll say is Cain must be opting for brute force in the midfield over techinical flair.

..At least Nelson Suburbs forward Alex Ridsdale made it. So Auckland schools to be stacked again now for next year?

Edit:  Hmm - on second glance, that looks like the original squad selected after the National Talent Centres, not the pared down qualification squad.

I really hope we haven't selected muscle over skill.

Doesn't matter how strong you are if you cant catch the opposition or do anything with the ball when you finally get it.

Coaches here don't learn. Cain has the footballing knowledge of a monkey and the moral fibre of a twig.

Makes me wonder what you know about football. Steve Cain does know about football, but not sure what you mean about the moral fibre of a twig?

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Attacking balance to New Zealand squad for U-17 qualifiers
New Zealand U-17 coach Steve Cain says he has emphasised attack in selecting a 20 strong squad for Januarys FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifying tournament in Auckland.

Steve Cain adresses his squad at training.

December 16, 2010

AUCKLAND New Zealand U-17 coach Steve Cain says he has emphasised attack in selecting a 20 strong squad for Januarys FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifying tournament in Auckland.

The Young All Whites has been pooled with Fiji, American Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu in Group A of the 10 team OFC U-17 Championships beginning on January 8, with the winner of the pool facing the top team from Group B comprising Tahiti, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Tonga.

The winner of the January 19 final will represent Oceania at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup held in Mexico in June and July.

With little margin for error, Cain has opted for players who can break down Oceanic teams increasingly well drilled on defence.

If anything weve gone with an overload of attacking players, says Cain.

Weve got some very talented and pacey players in this squad. We hope to go at teams and we know well be up against some pretty solid and well organised opponents and were looking to impose our game on them. We at home so were going to look to make things happen when weve got the ball.

In the 2009 edition, New Zealand posted 2-0 wins over Tahiti and New Caledonia and a 3-0 victory over Vanuatu 3-0 in qualifying before reaching the knockout stages of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria.

Cain says that if qualification is secured the balance of his squad may have a different look to it for the finals.

If wed been going to a World Cup wed need to be more conservative and more balanced between attack and defensive minded players.

Its a difficult choice because we are not taken anything for granted we know how strong some of the teams are going to be but we have to back ourselves especially at home and with the type of players weve got.

Were trying to be as positive as possible but bearing in mind there are no gimmes in this world anymore.

The majority of the squad have been with ASB Youth League squads this season and a few have been listed in ASB Premiership squads. Waitakere Uniteds Tim Payne who made his debut for Auckland City late last season has already featured the top league and that tender age of 16.

The New Zealand coaching staff had interest from players with kiwi ties in Australia, USA, Taiwan and Europe although the group chosen are all New Zealand based.

Its a reflection of how well we did last time and of course who well the All Whites did in South Africa. The attention were getting Worldwide has ramped up quite significantly.

Cain has identified Vanuatu, who sent an U-15 side to the U-17 qualifiers two years ago, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea as the main threats to New Zealand in the group stage.
