NZ get off to winning start at Panda Cup

The New Zealand U-17 men have got off to a winning start at the Panda Cup overnight (NZT) in China.

The José Figueira coached team, who were inspired by the heroics of the NZ U-20 men in Poland who yesterday recorded a 5-0 win over Honduras to make history, defeated the China PR U-18 men’s team 2-0 at the Shuangliu Sports Centre in Chengdu.

Jesse Randall opened the scoring for New Zealand just before half-time and Matthew Garbett converted a penalty midway through the second half to secure the win.

Figueira was proud of his young team as they began the Panda Cup by upsetting the defending champions at their home tournament.

“It is important to mention that we are a team that is one year younger than the teams we are playing. The players showed massive effort and massive courage out there tonight,” said Figueira at the post match press conference.

“For everybody watching the game, they probably didn’t notice that we have a younger team. I am very proud of this performance and this is a big step for us in our preparations for the World Cup later in the year.”

The victory sees New Zealand move to the top of the Panda Cup standings after day one. South Korea scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to defeat Thailand 2-1 in the earlier game.

The New Zealand U-17 men are playing in the Panda Cup for the second time and using the tournament to get ready for the FIFA U-17 Men’s World Cup in Brazil in October. The draw will for the FIFA U-17 World Cup will be held on 31 May in Rio de Janeiro.

New Zealand will face South Korea in a top of the table clash tomorrow night (NZT) and finish their tournament two days later against Thailand.

It is the second time that New Zealand has competed in the Panda Cup after they were invited to the inaugural event in 2014 where they played Brazil, Croatia and China.

More to come.

The Korean lads are bloody Big units. Will be a physical challenge.

Hopefully cramp won’t be as much of an issue as it was against China.

South korea scores 1-0

Based on stats they are dominating the game, attacking wise, although we seem to be doing ok possession wise.

Korea just missed a penalty.

Korea much faster than China were, they’re a good team, well drilled and pressing high

2-0 Korea at half time, scored rebound from penalty

Finished 4-0. :(. Korea scored a 4th in added time.

Korea were a bloody good team.Big, strong, fast and technically very very good( everything I thought China might be but weren’t). Also quite well versed in the dark arts. Had an excellent no. 10 who was very comfortable playing almost as a false 9.

Finished 1-0 to Thailand.

NZU17s finished 3rd in the 4 team competition.

Beat hosts China 2-0

Lost to eventual winners S.Korea 4-0

Lost to Thailand 1-0, having been reduced to 10 mean early in second half.

Overall decent showing considering we were U17 while the other sides were U18

Korea didn't endear themselves to many people with their antics after prizegiving....

Only saw first game verse China and followed stats for other two games. Thoughts so far.

Centre backs looked good, wide players up front were useful along with an abundance of holding midfielders. Team lacks an out and out striker in combination with a quality creative playmaker much like a Mata Singh combination. And add in a ranging fullback in the mould of Cacace.

Maybe a little unfair to compare this team to the U20s given how talented and well they are doing.

So Osuth Korea won the Panda Cup but the Chinese got upset at their "obscene" celebrations (which seemed to be a player posing with his foot on the cup) and took it back off them!

heres article about it

Unfair result in many respects. Thailand scored after a couple of minutes but from then on the NZ lads matched them  , even when down to 10. The "refereeing " performance, if one could call it that, was interesting to say the very least.

Not sure about China but in Thailand that is a very disrespectful thing to do.

Sounds like China may be the same.

Piss poor article from BBC.

Panda cup Wikipedia page has any number of links to articles which state eye witnesses reported  "Korean players also pretended to urinate against the cup"

Maybe that's not considered obscene or offensive where you come from...
