Laughably, the SA manager has decided Liam Jordan doesn't suit the style of football he wants to play and so has dropped him from the squad for Chile.

Liam is only on the 35 player long list sent to FIFA, not in the final squad.

Named in the "Top 50 Young Players in the World" recently - but not judged good enough by SA for their u-17 squad.

Poor management and coaching seems to be holding SA football back from developing.

It's good news for NZ though because now you'd think he'll say "Stuff them. I'm opting to play for NZ sides from now on".

Could we see Liam in our next u-20's nd u-23's?

SA newspaper interview with their u-17 manager where he's specifically asked about Liam not being in the squad going to Chile:

The South African FA may have discovered that Liam is actually ineligible to play for SA?

Maybe he only has a NZ passport and not a SA one?

This could be a classic case of eligibility problems as we in NZ are all too familiar with this year.

SA citizens who take a foreign citizenship when aged younger than 18 retain their SA citizenship.

However FIFA require players to hold the passport of the county they wish to play for.

SA don't routinely allow dual citizenship - when a South African aged 18 or older acquires the passport of another country, their SA citizenship is automatically cancelled - unless they have applied to keep it beforehand.

This may have happened to Deklan Wynne too when he acquired a NZ passport in January - his SA citizenship would have been revoked unless he had applied to keep it before acquiring a NZ passport because he was 18 or older.

If Liam is a NZ citizen then he can't play for South Africa unless he has applied to the SA government to keep his SA citizenship before acquiring NZ citizenship. Their FA would have to apply to FIFA to grant an exception for him as NZ should have done Deklan Wynne and Storm Roux.
