Chairman's Comment in the Wests program from yesterday talked about the U20s. Touched on it being outside of FIFA windows and the fact that other players/clubs declined the call-up, but this was probably the main point:
New Zealand Men's U-20s
How do we rate Ben Deeley? Was told by a teammate that he chose to pull out but has always seemed like the best player on the field whenever I've seen him play for Grammar
Got sent off playing for Grammar today, not the best performance, still would love to see him pull it off for the U20s

[quote]These days players pathways are an ongoing project and a lot of science goes into their development. Players are also realising that it is their clubs that have got them to where they are and are showing tremendous loyalty to the programmes set up for them.
What it does not say is whether the players made the decision of their own free will or the decision was made for them?

Having now seen the Chairman's programme notes, I can tell you they say "Both Wellington Phoenix and Onehunga Sports players have chosen to stay within their clubs along with our very own Wests players of which five were in contention for the qualifying tournament in Tahiti," before the passage already quoted.
Note, however, afaik, no Onehunga Sports players have chosen to stay with their club.
The notes also claim "the bulk" of players invited have made the same decision, when I have it as eight - the five from Wests, the two from the Phoenix, and Oli Duncan - out of an initial group of 28. Ben Deeley, as discussed here, turned down a camp invite, but not because of club commitments (he doesn't have one).
Vandaag

Out of those three games, I'd assum Tahiti is our toughest opposition.
It would seem so, however looking at the oceania site all the teams seem far better prepared and have played games against good opposition, some playing their senior sides, others A league sides etc. Our team had one inter squad game at the end of a 4 day camp.

2 years ago at U17 (so each of these teams would have about half of that 2016 squad for this tournament) we comfortably?! beat PNG 2-1 with a 90+3 winner.
Underestimate the opposition at your peril.
Or send under strength team at your peril.

They may have been 'invited' but the non-Aucklanders were also expected to pay their own airfares.
LINEUPS | Here's the line up for our game which sees defending champions New Zealand?? go up against the hosts Tahiti??.
Subs: Zac JONES GK, Dane SCHNELL, Matt CONROY, Trevor ZWETSLOOT, Jorge AKERS, Boyd CURRY, Ollie WHYTE
For all the talk about Trevor - surprised to see him on the bench... leaving him for the later games??
For all the talk about Trevor - surprised to see him on the bench... leaving him for the later games??
He was a reserve for the final camp and only came in when the others withdrew. that might tell us something?
But he's the next Rufer.
tbf we've looked pretty poor for the first 30 so he wouldn't be worse.
We seem too slow on the ball and keen to lump it... Bell keeps telling players to settle but no one seems to be listening. I like the look of Spain.
Going long when they are playing so deep they are barely leaving the 18 is frustrating.
Pen
Finishes 2-1 to NZ - goals to Mata and I think an OG? Was a goalmouth scramble either way.
Not overly impressive from what I saw.

Just as the non-Wellingtonians were for the April camp. Paying for such things has long been the norm. A difference this year, at least v the last U-17s cycle, is that costs weren't equalised across the group, but still.
2nd goal went to Spragg
I thought we dominated without looking like we were ever fully in control. Should have had a couple more.
But he's the next Rufer.

Maybe he's the next Alex Rufer
Leading 1-0 v Tonga after 29 goal to Tipelu

5-0 Bell completets a hat trick in 6 minutes
