Looks like there are limited striker resources anyone know of anyone else eligible playing overseas as a striker? I notice Judd Baker is listed as ECB thought he was at the Swansea Academy.  Outside Chance for Dylan Burns to be included closer to the tournament once he is settled with Forest?

Still possibility of David Browne I'm hearing.

He's not in the PNG squad list (see latest www.oceaniafootball.com). Still hope for NZ then.

True. So the uncertainty over who he'll represent internationally continues.

do you think he was selected in the NZ squad and instead chose to play for ACFC this weekend?

Or do you think the coaching staff from the NZ team said to him play in the ACFC game and we will pick you next time?

Just curious..

I think he's still working toward gaining NZ eligibilty. But I'd be curious to know if the PNG selectors approached him/still have hopes.

I must be the only one that believes David Browne should play for PNG. I'm all for New Zealand getting better, but poaching players from the Islands isn't the best way forward. I'd like to see the other teams in Oceania improve too, so it's not the biggest joke in world football.

I guess this is all conjecture and rumour as none of us know the true situation.

One question to ask in terms of footballing career A-League and beyond do you think personally for him it is better to play for PNG or New Zealand?

If He or anyone went to the States for College and became a citizen  and got selected for USA would it be the same issue?

Apparently he is also eligible for ENG but that seams to be a long shot so NZ if he choses to continue his life here seams to be the logical course in terms of his personal/professional development.  Don't think anyone in the PNGRFU has many issues with Will Genia playing for AUS as now he has made a career out of rugby he goes back and coaches and develops players in PNG.  Unfortunately it seams to be Career or Country for someone from the Islands (Tahiti seams a bit easier with the French connection).

Cant knock people for trying to succeed in their chosen career probably has a lot of people at home relying on him.

If he's been here long enough he could be a New Zealand citizen or resident, whichever makes him a non-import for the Phoenix. He could also have represented PNG.

Don't think Some Island Nations allow dual Nationality so not sure on non import status

You think he should play for PNG if he doesn't want to? He and his family have lived in NZ a few years now. Pretty sure he's trying for NZ citizenship with his parents' blessing/assistance. I believe he's v keen to represent us in the World Under-20's.

I remember checking out David Browne's eligibility to play for NZ last year and my conclusion based on info I found was that he wasn't eligible. FIFA generally don't allow players to play for one country in an official competition at youth level and then play for another country in an official competition at youth level. He wouldn't be eligible to play for NZ at senior level either.

He's already played in competitive matches for PNG u-17 (Easy to confirm online) and I don't think he was eligible to play for NZ at the time (a FIFA requirement). It all hinges on whether Browne was also eligible to represent NZ at the time he played competitive matches for PNG u-17.

This would mean having NZ citizenship at the time, being born here or having a NZ .parent or grandparent. I've not seen any information that he was eligible to play for NZ when he played those competitive games for PNG u-17.

Current All Whites Mike McGlinchey, Rory Fallon, Tommy Smith and Winston Reid all played in competitive matches for other countries at age group level but were eligible to play for NZ when they did so (McGlinchey, Fallon and Reid through having been born here and Smith through having residency). Hence they successfully applied to play for NZ at senior level.

http://www.aucklandcityfc.com/squad/profile.asp?ID=65

His own Player Profile on the ACFC website says he played "All matches for Papua New Guinea at the 2011 OFC U17 Championship."

Also confirmed here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_OFC_U-17_Championship

It's easy to find info on David Browne's dad who was PNG's greatest cartoonist and died in 2011. Bob Browne was an English-born immigrant to PNG who went to do voluntary service and stayed:

http://dogbitesman.net.au/2011/03/goodbye-mr-grass-roots/

"Browne would eventually take PNG citizenship and marry into a local family."

So it seems no NZ ancestry for David. His mother is a PNG native I believe.

David Browne was born and raised in PNG:

http://www.emtv.com.pg/sports-app/item/png-david-browne-to-fifa

I believe he went to Auckland as a teenager on a scholarship to study at St Peter's college.

The relevant FIFA statute (p.64 +):

Cheers BigP. Maybe someone's been giving him poor advice. Hope not. Fascinating read about his father.

PS Does having represented PNG at Under-17's mean he's represented them at full "A" international level?

Wow great research always enjoy your reply's as you do the ground work.
One question doesn't  "A" International refer to the senior mens team only?

5. International “A” Match: a match for which both Members field their first

Representative Team (“A” Representative Team).

Potentially he could still be eligible if he hasn't played for the PNG first team.  Did Durante play any age group for AUS?

Durante did not but when you look at Lia, he played age group for AU without NZ eligibility which he needed to be able to change, thus he could not. Browne is exactly the same (played age group for PNG without NZ eligibility)

He cannot play for NZ.

Well there is a way he could... if NZ were to annexe PNG. But that's possibly a step too far.

Is there a rule with Fifa that allows players to change nationalities if the move from a minnow to a more recognisable country - for opportunities etc. So long as they are a resident?

I know they use to have rules to help make the signing of said type players easier.

Tim Cahill is an obvious example but he was one of the reasons Fifa changed its ruling.

Ridenton a no show. Don't know why - like Andre de J he was an "unused sub". Rufer neat and combative and occasionally creative, so best player for NZ IMO, but he still gets pushed off the ball too easily I reckon. Re Monty P, haha! Howevr he's far more assertive than Rufer. And he scored a peach direct from a free outside the pen. But he's also a bit too selfish. Guess they often go together.
