We are going to win the World Cup thanks to the tactical genius of Bazeley!

Credit to the boys & nice to see us banging some goals in. Fortunate however that Myanmar have completely self combusted in the second half!!

Yet again the Westpac Stadium Effect comes to force. North Harbour Stadium should never see a New Zealand Football match again.

wait, are you saying that due to lewis's talent, the keeper missed the ball? seems a bit far fetched to me...

I'm not sure if we won that because of Bazeley's changes or in spite of them, to be honest. Credit to the team though, they really pushed on after that first girl.

Myanmar had a habit this tournament of capitulating after a certain amount of time. Wouldn't credit Bazeley too much.

Permalink Permalink

Has it been mentioned that Myanmar have only lost their matches in the second half?

vs USA 1-0 HT

vs URK 0-0 HT

vs NZ 1-1 HT

All then gone onto loose the game

Wow didn't expect that, Great result but are we in for the 2nd round?.

I'd be very surprised if we don't get through.

Ghana or Portugal likely for our quarter. To be fair I have no idea who i would rather not play.

Great to see we got players in the box and scored. I'm also happy to see Lewis suspended as I don't think he has done anything in three games. I've given Billingley a lot of grief, and whist i still think he's a poor mans peter crouch he did make some good decisions and set up a couple goals.

I was quite impressed by Blake at RB, strong in the tackle and confident on the ball when he came on.

Rufer was also a lot better outlet today.

Watched this game with a some local football friends here in France.....after 40 minutes the locals were asking.....does the NZ team have a coach????? We made Mynamar look like Brazil. We couldn't string more than two passes going forward. Our defensive screening in front of the back four was almost non existant and we looked like a team that had first met each other 30 minutes before the match.

Second half Mynamar just fell apart. So did we suddenly start playing well or do the Mynamar team have such poor conditioning that they can't play a high tempo game for more than 40 minutes????(like they did against the Ukraine) Because it seemed to me that certainly in the first half they had better players and had better tactics than us.

On the positive side great win for the lads.....any side that wins 5-1 in an international needs a big pat on the back. They dug in and made a game of it. Rufer has some nice skills ....his back heel in the buildup to the second goal was great. Billingsley did some good work and our keeper was tidy. Tuiloma had a quiet game.....I suspect he played at CB because his groin is shot. Our midfield was very poor both on attack and defense.

The ROF is the natural home of NZ football. The croud was big and noisy.....the white fever sounded loud on TV.....what was with the drumming?

Four points should get us into the next round. So its mission accomplished for the tournament. We will play a very good team and get slaughtered.

For me the jury is still out on NZ youth football. I can't see many of this team forming the bulk of a future senior All White side. Having watched all three games I can't think of many who have put their hand up and said "I'm one for the future"

And I was happy to see Patterson finally start. He gives some good go forward and attacking intent. The only change I would like to see is Tuiloma pushed back into the midfield. I think we missed him defensively.

Do not shoot the messenger

Hard on the kid for sure but wow Brook Messenger really, really struggled tonight. Was often beaten for pace, kept kicking the long to no one, or kicking it out, at fault for the goal too. I know some people didn't rate Jesse Edge but I really think either him or Andrew Blake should be there in the next game.

I think Monty Patterson and Noah Billingsley have been our two best of the tournament, really promising talents.

What's everyone's thoughts on the keeper? ..think Sail will come back in for the next game too.

Watching on Tele I thought he put in a really good 60 odd minutes until he was subbed.

5-1 was a great result but did not reflect what was another disjointed, lacklustre performance.

We lacked fluidity and any composure through transition and basically resorted to running off flick ons from long balls and throw ins. We did, however, take our chances which was an improvement so hats off in that regard.

Against a more athletic and stronger side this won't work though.

It is hard saying this as a fan as I REALLY wish the guys all the best but I hope people don't kid themselves over this result. I was hoping for the result, obviously, but was equally hoping to see the team keep the ball, play through the thirds with tempo and dominate but we did not do that.

So tonight cemented for me that we need to adjust our expectations around playing style and that these guys are a route 1 League One style team. All this talk about a high tempo, possession based, pressing game is just PR nonsense. The proof was always going to be the product; not the sound bites from Hudson's puppets.

That said.

Rufer made a big difference as was able to use his athleticism to hold the ball up for runners.

Patterson was again lively, just needs to lift his head.

Tuiloma's distribution was very average. It was obviously not just him but the long balls from the back 4 are so predictable and easy to defend. He didn't stand out as a pro footballer.

Myanmar made us look very average with some silky passing and could have been 2-0 up.

Anyway, can't fault the passion and hunger and that does go a long way in these matches. Well done to the guys. Despite the technical and tactical limitations, the team is what it is, so we may as well get in behind it!

Three for me, and two for them.

Power, some pace and incessant long balls...it worked tonight and good luck to them. Hope the coach and players will come clean though,  and stop spouting " possession based game " nonsense...

well it wasn't a secret that the long ball would undo Mynamer...perhaps  give credit for a game plan for the opposition  working? Agree, however, that it would not work if they progress to last 16.

That was like watching Scotland beat Japan at rugby. Comprehensive win, but a shark and ugly game that inspires little confidence in the future of the team in this tournament, or the future of the senior international side.

should we assume that any more than 2 or 3 of this cohort will become national side regulars?

Well, I can't see where we would get anyone better than what we've already seen / already got on the park, in this generation?

I think there is a lot of reasonably good talent - but I am not not sure if they are in the best environment to progress much further. Certainly employing a better coach / technical director would go a long way if we want to play better football at AW level in 4 years time.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days
