didnt Hay say a little while ago that the logistic and organising games like this was just too hard/costly?
FFA securing 4 games for their Euro based Olyoos debunks it being too hard, without yes knowing anymore than that.
And re the cost I'd agrue that if NZF could organise a game & camp 3 years ago in Spain, they can do same now.
I just remember Hay complaining last year about the sacrifice he would have to make being away from family when those friendlies against England & Belgium (later cancelled) were being announced in Europe. Covid has been shark for everyone, and I don't mean to underplay being apart from one's family. But he's an international football coach in unprecedented times, with the only really big games of his AWs coaching reign (Olympics & intercontinental playoffs) both looming, over next 12 months. Now is when he earns his bread, after 2 years of Zoom & soltaire.
Sorry I just didn't like the sound of him 'complaining' last year, when Buckingham with the U20s had just quietly gone about his business, and it was later revealed he had often delved into his own pocket, when travelling far and wide to monitor his playing group.
If there was some news that AWs would be seeking friendlies (likely Europe) in Sept-Oct-Nov windows later this year, then I'd give Hay some more slack.
But seems only plan at the moment is Tokyo - where you can only take 3 oa players (so far from a full strength AWs squad), and which could well end up as a rushed low quality exercise if some important players, are only released just prior the first Olympics game by their clubs. Then an AWs (likely not full strength) gathering for some OFC WC qualifying tourney next January.
Then if AWs progress from that, maybe 1-2 warmup games in the March 2022 window before the big June 2022 intercontinental playoffs. That's woeful prep when trying to qualify for a 4 yearly World Cup, even given the difficulties of Covid. And given there has never been such a promising group of young NZ footballers coming through, it's depressing if they are not given the best chance to make it to Qatar.
