NZ FIFA Ranking
Latest FIFA rankings out. No change for us, still ranked 130th.
Whilst we languish at 130 due to lack of games, it's hard to bear our Aussie neighbours being 21 in the world (have been at that kind of ranking for several months now due to regular games in Asia.)
Teams ranked lower than Australia: Japan, USA, Czech Republic, Paraguay, Norway, Ghana, Colombia, Turkey, Belgium, Romania, Scotland, Wales, Peru.
That would have been hard to believe a decade ago.
These two good results in Texas (which count as away results = more points) could well take the All Whites into the top 100.
Using the ranking calculator on the FIFA website:
http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/index.html
Current Points 256 Possible Ranking Points 341
Depending on other teams' recent results, that would rocket us up to 99 in the world (Guyana currently occupy that position on 341 points).
We''ll advance even further assuming we win the OFC Nations Cup next month...
NZ's likely new ranking based on latest results using the ranking calculator on the FIFA website:
http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/index.html
Ranking Prognosis: Current Points 256
Possible Ranking Points 469
That would possibly take us as far as Number 74 in the world (depending on other teams' results):
(74 NZ 469)
72 Iraq 476 73 Austria 475 74 Latvia 465 75 Canada 450
NEXT RELEASE OF FIFA WORLD RANKINGS: JUNE 6 EUROPEAN TIME (probably won't include All Whites' result v Solomons)
M * I * T * C = P PNG - NZL 1:2 3 2.5 50 0.85 318.75 FIJ - NZL 0:1 3 2.5 50 0.85 318.75 HON - NZL 0:1 3 1 138 0.865 358.11 SLV - NZL 2:2 1 1 151 0.865 130.615

A jump of 30 positions, nice.
Other interesting moves:
-Uruguay second in world (behind Spain, in front of Germany).
-England up one to sixth (lol).
-France up two places to 14th (21 games undefeated).
-Portugal drop five to 10th (after a horrible run).
That's a decent jump, but if only they'd calculated the rankings at the end of the OFC nations cup results as well. Then we might have jumped about 60 places, truly highlighting how inaccurate the Fifa Rankings are.
And now for a healthy anti-jinx, noting the presumptuous nature of the above comment, I was very impressed by the SI today. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we don't win this tournament, and am just pleased we are through the next round of World Cup qualifiers.
As you were...
RANKING OF OCEANIA TEAMS:
NZ are now 55 places above the next best Oceania side, New Caledonia.
Other places (Oceania ranking):
3. Samoa 149 pts !!!!!! ?????
4. Fiji 133 pts
5. Vanuatu 103 pts
6. Tonga 88 pts !!!!!! ?????
7. Tahiti 86 pts
8. Solomon Islands 75 pts
9. American Samoa 61 Pts
10. Papua New Guinea: 34 pts
11. Cook Islands 28 pts
Of course, performances in the OFC Cup indicate Solomons should be much higher, PNG a little higher and Samoa way lower and probably absent Tonga lower.
I suspect the reason why Samoa and Tonga are so highly ranked is because they played in qualifiers for OFC Cup which as official games carried a few points, while the other Oceania sides were pretty much inactive during the same period.
Making the rankings something of a joke?
New Zealand is on the up.
Making the rankings something of a joke?
They pretty much are in Oceania, because teams here don't tend to play competetively very often.
They also don't seem to play anyone other than themselves (excluding us). Well actually I'm just assuming they dont play in other countries

Won't change until after 2014 World Cup at the very very earliest. You're going to have to live with this for a fair while longer.

They pretty much are.
Fixed.
New Caledonia will get a shitload of points (250) for beating us.
You would think that 120th place in the world would lose by a lot more than one goal to 50th place.
And the cost of bringing teams to thsi part of the world.
Using the "rankings prognosis" calculator on the FIFA website, we should stay about the same around the 100 mark despite losing to New Caledonia.
New Caledonia (already ranked second-best in Oceania by FIFA) should stay second a long way back at about 148.
Tahiti (only ranked 7th in Oceania in the current rankings) will only move from their current 179 to about 151.
The rankings class all OFC Nations Cup games equally as competitive matches eligible for maximum weighting, with no distinctions for the semi-finals or final or third-fourth play-off. So us losing to New Caledonia is balanced by other teams' results and is not majorly significant in terms of rankings since we were W:3 D:1 L:1 over the tournament, New Caledonia 3:0:2 and Tahiti, despite winning all their games, too low in FIFA's rankings and their wins were over sides ranked too low for it to have much impact.
The rankings also give a lot of weight to historical results over previous months, which helps NZ compared to the Pacific teams.
FIFA will publish the July rankings on 4 July, and I've just been looking at the unconfirmed preview of those.
The interesting news is that NZ is forecast to move into the top 100 despite the Solomons disaster, more precisely to 95. Tahiti will be the second best Oceania side at 138, followed by New Caledonia at 143. The Solomons will be 174, one place below Samoa.
Of the other interesting tidbits, England will go into the top 4, Italy have returned to the top 10 at 6, Croatia remain in the top ten at 9, and for the first time since the rankings have begun, Brazil has slipped out of the top 10, at 11 (their previous worst ranking was 8 in 1993). USA has also reached its lowest ever ranking at 36 (beating 35 in 1997), and our dear Australia is out of the top 20 at 23.
Weren't they unbeaten for quite a few games before euro?
Weren't they unbeaten for quite a few games before euro?
Not to mention they were unbeaten at the EURO.
New Zealand are 95 now in the FIFA Rankings

If we had won every game at the Nations Cup, we would be up around 65th, near to teams like El Salvador.
Brazil has slipped out of the top 10, at 11 (their previous worst ranking was 8 in 1993).
An anomaly you won't see the likes of again for a long time explained by the current emphasis Brazil are placing on their Olympic side. They've been entering their Olympic side of mostly u-23 players with a couple of over-age in the place of their full national side in their last four internationals. Although they comfortably accounted for Denmark's Euro 2012 side and the full US team, they lost their last two games last month to the full Mexico and Argentina national sides.
Brazil have only fielded their senior national side in one game this year, a 2-1 win over Bosnia.
I fear our Oly Whites could suffer some humiliation from Brazil's emphasis on their Olympic side. They've had a policy of not making any distinctions between their Olympic side and full national side this year, as their manager has decided to use the Olympic side as a basis for his future World Cup side and retire many of the older players. They're very serious about adding the Olympic trophy to their cabinet this time, the only world football title they've never won...
We'll have won two by then and put out the ressies to give them a chance.

Not just the Olympics causing this - they qualilfy as hosts for the next WC so theres no worry about fielding full strength players/maintaining consistency ahead of said qualifiers
