I do not agree playing both play-off matches on November because both teams will be tired and most of the play-offs the OFC has been involved since 1986 has been:
1986 20 November 1985 and 4 December 1986
Australia lost 2-0 to Scotland. Australia could of won at Melbourne but Scotland played good football and it was great for the team after the death of Jock Stein.
1990 15 October 1989 and 30 October 1989
Israel lost 1-0 to Colombia. Israel was part of the OFC for policital reasons and if Israel qualifed the UAE would not of played Israel.
1994 31 October 1993 and 17 November 1993
Australia lost 2-1 to Argentina. Australia won Canada in the first play-off but got a 1-1 draw at Sydney and did well to hold Maradona's Argentina to 1-0 but Argentina at that time had played in three out of the previous four FIFA World Cup Finals.
1998 22 November 1997 and 29 November 1997
Australia drew 2-2 with Iran but lost on away goal rule. Australia threw away a 2-0 lead to Iran which would of given Terry Venables' Australia a place in the FIFA World Cup. The Iran manager and players even admitted that Australia should of gone to France.
2002 20 November 2001 and 25 November 2001
Australia lost 3-1 to Uruguay. Australia had a slender lead to take to Montevideo but they had security problems and I think that had an effect on the team. Also Uruguay had played well to get three goals and two years later it was also decided that the OFC should have a long overdue automatic place in the FIFA World Cup and CONMEBOL moaned about it.
2006 12 November 2005 and 16 November 2006
Australia drew 1-1 with Uruguay but won 4-2 on penalties. Australia qualifed for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1974 and it was long overdue that the OFC qualifed for the FIFA World Cup because Australia felt they should have been at Mexico '86, Italy '90 (if they won Israel), USA '94, France '98 and Korea/ Japan '02.
2010 10 October 2009 and 14 November 2009
New Zealand won 1-0 with Bahrain. New Zealand played in the first play-off without Australia which had moved to Asia and New Zealand was lucky to beat Bahrain with a penalty save from Paston.
