The pre-sale concept with a 'secret (yet not so secret) code is actually a really cunning idea. It makes people who haven't been offered the pre-sale think they are going to miss out, so they ask around about this code, which by this stage is not secret at all and gets passed around to every man and his dog who then rush in to get as many tickets as they can telling their mates "hay mate I have the pre sale code, you keen on tickets before the general public snap them up?" While adding a few spares on to the total - there are people doing this - and before you know it 16k sold in a few days. I know this was exactly the plan I just wasn't convinced it would work as well as it has, but what do I know about marketing strategy etc!
