There is a video of Telemundo doing a dual screen live shot of the US/Panama and Mexico/Costa Rica games and the reaction from the Mexican commentator is sheer ecstasy when he see the US scores while calling the Mexico game. He severely admonishes the Mexico squad ("remember this day Mexico. Remember this day that when you had to do what you needed to, you couldn't and you needed the US to qualify you for you") between the two goals in stoppage time.
As for the sponsorship, there was a report earlier that Costa Rica might have had to play the game against Mexico behind closed doors because of missiles coming from the Costa Rica fans and their instance on using lasers and shooting them in the opposing teams eyes. It smacked of favoritism because the Mexican fans are NOTORIOUS for doing that, and the US players face that against every concacaf team they play with the exception of T&T. ESPN would also be extremely upset if Mexico did not qualify because they bought up their broadcast rights and have even dictated when US games get played when they conflict so as to have a favorable broadcast slot for the Mexico fans.
I will certainly be rooting for New Zealand because Mexico has not been playing like they want to win anything, but I expect there will be a few dubious calls in Mexico's favor in the Azteca unfortunately.
