What involvement does Carlos Slim have in Mexican football Javier? I know he is the richest man in the world and owns pretty much the whole country. This man is worth over 70 billion dollars. How you obtain this kind of money LEGALLY is beyond me. If he is heavily involved in Mexican football, surely it is very corrupt.

It all strikes me of the days of the Colombian drug cartels where each cartel head owned a club (Pablo Escobar owned Medellin's Atletico Nacional).  In addition to the drug trade and the violence, it was another way to best their opposition by having the best and most flashy team.  Carlos Slim is the head of a major conglomerate which among its portfolio owns Telmex, which controls over 90% of Mexico's landline phone market as well as América Móvil which according to Wikipedia is the fourth largest mobile network operator in the world and 90% of the Mexican mobile phone market.  Basically he has a monopoly on all phone networks in Mexico and several Latin American countries.  Apparently his net worth is roughly 5% of Mexico's annual economic output.  When you want to get involved with anything and have that kind of money in a country with a huge disparity in wealth, it seems fairly logical that he could worm his way into the upper echelon of almost anything, especially a floundering FMF.

It is certainly entertaining how much of a circus this has become.  Just a year ago American supporters were all doom and gloom over Mexico's Olympic gold and thoughts that we were falling behind, or failing to take the next step with Mexico.  Fans and teammates were even rumbling about getting rid of Jurgen Klinsmann.  Mexico, to our chagrin and only muttered under our breath, was being considered a dark horse to win the World Cup in Brazil.  It is amazing how much has changed since then.  To be fair, Mexico is not as bad of a team as they currently appear, but something is definitely broken with their current system.  Players are actively refusing to play for the team.  Sooner or later the FMF will have to take a long hard look in the mirror and will eventually get it right.  Mexico is good for US football and the CONCACAF regional as a whole.  Hopefully the turn around will not happen until after the All Whites humiliate them.  Two Aztecazos in the span of a few months would be the sweetest humble pie possible from an American perspective.
